I recently visited a scrap yard whhich had a Momo Champion steering wheel and boss for sale £100 squid all in, well possibly a like more if you want it posted to you, in excelent nick !

If you buy an after market wheel there are 2 different bosses. Pre and post 85.

The splines are the same but they have different lugs for the indicator cancel.

Sorry, cant remember if you can change the lugs over.

Warning......If you put a post 85 boss with a metal lug on a pre 85 car it will go on fire the first time you turn the wheel......I know[:eek:]

I tried this wheel on my oval dash car but it sits proud and doesnt cancel the indacators so im selling it .A guy wants to know if it will fit his 928 i think it will but in not 100% sure and i dont want to set his car on fire !!

The indicator cancelling lug is part of a ring that is attatched by 3 screws, sell your wheel without the lug & let the 928 owner put his one onto the wheel.
 
No not at all.

You will need the correct socket and socket extension but very easy. Watch when you tak your wheel off to disconnect the horn wire and then re-connect the new one.

First park up the car with the wheels straight ahead and the steering wheel at the 12'o'clock poition. Ensure the ignition is at position 1 to prevent the horn from sounding. This usually surprises yourself during installation before it annoys the neighbours! In this position you should also ensure that the steering lock is not on to ensure you do not break it. The original horn pad will pull off if you grab both sides and pull firmly. Try not to pull too far as the horn wire is attached. Pull the wire off the connection on the back of the horn pad. Using a socket on the end of a long extension bar you should be able to reach the nut. You may be able to undo the nut, anti-clockwise whilst hold the wheel with the other hand or even contorting yourself whilst your knees put pressure on the wheel.

Reverse the process to get the new wheel on. Try to get the new wheel on at the 12'o'clock position. You should only be one spline out of dead centre at most. Make sure that you fit the big washer between the wheel and the nut. Get someone to assist holding the wheel to ensure that you get the nut tight. This is critical stage for safety.

Warning: do not attempt any of this whilst driving!

I have just bought a Momo wheel to replace the stock one on my S2 ... the steering wheel boss is the same as a VW one, does anyone happen to know which VW one? I *think* it's late Mk2 Golf - can anyone confirm?

(I'm asking because Porsche-listed bosses sell for lots on eBay, but Golf ones are much more common and thus much cheaper!)

Not a difficult job ~ 964RS has covered the main points... The horn pad will resist strongly and you'll be convinced it's not going to come off by just pulling it.... but it does.[:)]

The main retaining nut is 24mm and you need quite a long reach socket. Rather than try and hold the wheel with my knees whilst loosening the nut I used a bar (as opposed to a ratchet) and tapped it with a hammer ~ it's not under massive load so moved easily.

Careful with the horn contact on the stalks - if you knock it off line it'll grate every time you turn the wheel.

A short socket on an extension will do, doesn't need to be a long (deep) socket.
(Not going to swear to it but I think the nut on mine was 22mm).

Be careful when using the hammer to dislodge the wheel. (Use a rubber mallet is best).
First time I removed the steering wheel on the 944 I hit it hard with the mallet, managed to prevent it hitting the roof lining by putting my nose in the way. After That I only use light blows and keep the other hand on the centre of the wheel to prevent it happening again.
Another way to check that the steering wheel is aligned correctly is to drive down the road slowly with the nut just finger tight. Stop , re-adjust wheel and set off again. When happy with position tighten up the nut with a socket.

Leave the nut on a few threads prior to wacking it.....and save yourself a painful nose [8D]
 
Coz mine don't [8|]. Is that what it is down to? It had a recon rack fitted last year with its previous owner. The receipt shows they removed and realigned the steering wheel. Left hand indicator doesn't knock off.
But if the wheel is central (to within one spline)then how can I correct this???
 
Dico - that sounds more like your stalks that are knackered - it's a real weakness with them. Does the indicator stalk feel "crunchy" when you move it?
 
Dico - I haven't found somewhere that lists the part numbers ... so don't know.

Fred - The Mk1 and early Mk2 Golfs had the same fitting, it changed in around 1988 from a smaller shaft to a larger one. Which is about the time that the 944 changed from the square dash to the oval dash. Also, in this thread on the Club GTi website:

... there is a chap who claims to have fitted a Porsche 968 steering wheel to his Golf. Both those pictured in his signature look like later cars (hence large shaft), and I am trying to make contact with him to find out more ...

Therefore, I *suspect* that the oval-dash 944 is the later Golf fitting. And, to this end, I am bidding on a late Golf steering boss on eBay. I'll keep you all posted!
