Strange noise

Strange noise. It ONLY happens when going over 45 MPH and the noise is only there when im turning left (So the weight is all on the right hand side of the car)

Its a wheerrrring sound from the rear. The wheels have been balanced. Also, there no vibrations to be felt when its happening

I'm willing to bet seven pence that it will be your anti roll bar support bracket. They tend to rust away and eventually snap so that the ARB moves around a bit under cornering. It's probably the offside if you hear it turning left and you should be able to see it once you jack the car up. Replacements are a few quid from the OPC

yes thats what I think it sounds like too. [;)]
If not the other things I would check is the swivel joint between the steering rack and the control arm (inside the gaiter)and also the tie rod end. Check the lower ball joint and wishbone arm mount inserts too.

I did more driving yesterday downtown in slow trafic and bumpy rides - the symptoms also occured over bumps and not just corners. Sounds like the suspension is playing up?

Well spotted - Paul and Peanut. It was the ARB hanger. Noise has disappeared stright after the worn one is replaced.

ORIGINAL: Diver944

Woohoo, I claim my seven pence :ROFLMAO:

....or I'll take your N/S/F wing in exchange [;)]
... answer two more questions right and you may get a door and rear 3/4 panel as well!

Thanks John. The noise fades out over a few seconds when the clutch is depressed. Seems to be worse in the 2-3k rpm range. It's driving me nuts as the car is fine otherwise.

Rich

.... it's not associated with the steering at all, is it? (Power steering on 944's is known for odd, low groaning noises.)

Oli.

Oli,

Its a good thought (my steering does make a few odd noises when on lock at very low rpm), but this definitely seems engine related.

Rich

OK, in which case it will probably be quite a low, background groan that gradually tapers off to silence (sounding like it goes up in pitch at the same time, maybe)? Sounds like it is coming from the front of the engine?

Mine did the same. Oil pressure relief valve. Particularly when coming off the clutch after a long(ish) hot(ish) run (like turning off a motorway, for instance.)

I was told not to worry about it. I tried not to. I ignored it. And to be honest, I can't remember the last time I heard it (my usage patterns of the car have changed, and it does a LOT more miles now. That may have helped.)

Oli.

Oli,

Think you may have cracked it - what you describe sounds like my car exactly. Will just have to ditch the family-guy mobile more often and use the 944 a bit more !

Thanks for your help

Rich

Ha! Ha! See, I've said it on here before and I'll say it again - I'm a GENIUS!

And a damnably good-looking one at that!

If I ever need someone to support my claims of geniususnessusus, can I give you as a referee Rich? Thanks!

Or, on a serious note, glad to have been of help, hope the problem goes away. Regular oil changes may have helped mine, and I do think that a pre-change oil flush is a good thing as well.

And, as you have said, simply use it more. (My S2 has improved hugely for use. I dread the day when I go back to travelling to client sites by tube ... )

Oli.

Oli,

Am happy to act as referee for gee-knee-us status, but only if you continue to be able to diagnose my cars ills without actually seeing it....

Going to work by tube is possibly marginally worse than driving a Passat estate. But only because I went for a 2.0T petrol and not a diesel.....

Under the carpet at the front of the footwell there is a board with all sorts of electrickery underneath it. I'm not sure exactly whats there but if you wait a short while I'm sure a more knowledgable person will be along soon to offer advice.
