Supercharger project

Thing is I bought all the bits from SFR that meant I effectively had the S2 kit, after that the only difference was the connections on the intercooler. I can see from various bits that 9M had to do quite a bit of modification to get it to fit to the 968, although where I'm struggling is in different areas [&:]

Would it be easier to use a Toyota chargecooler from a Celica GT4 and mount its radiator in the nose?

My dad makes hoses, rubber or silicone. Let me know if you want any help. He made me a breather kit for my lux, so if anyone with a lux needs any pipes can be sorted easily.

Cheers Tom, that's a really kind offer and much appreciated. At the moment it doesn't look like I'll need to take you up on it, but thanks anyway [:D].

I've spoken to RPM today and it seems that I wasn't imagining it, the inlet pipe had to be 'convinced' to fit (with a hammer [:D]). In truth they've just flattened the outside corner (as it seems 9M had already had to do to the lower pipe when they fitted it on the 968), but I can't see this affecting air flow too much.

The good news is they're fitting the belt now and it shouldn't be too long before it can be fired up [] If all's ok then I will have to do some very quick mapping on Sunday to make it safe for Mondays track evening!

I am going to have to move the horns though, the air filter now wants to live there...

Gareth, I've not ruled anyhting out at this point to be honest, but as I had a whacking big IC with the kit I thought I'd start with it. As long as it doesn't block too much air to the radiator then it should be ok, but I'm sure time will tell.

Great project btw, very interested to know about your results. What's the compression ratio of the S2 engine? I was wondering how much boost I could run on a lux engine with ~10:1.

Oli can be pretty convincing when wielding a hammer [;)]

That's great news if they manage to fire it up this evening, I shall be listening for a huge whooshing sound from the Beds, Bucks, Herts back lanes

I meant to check last night and forgot, but think it's 10,9:1 on an S2. It seems to be safest to run in the region of 5-7 psi, although I believe 9M have run considerably more (14psi) with the standard compression ratio []

That was good timing, I just started to type a reply and Darren phoned (seemed he'd been trying me all day but my mobiles been playing up []).

The good news is it's all done, I didn't speak to Ian who fitted it, but I doubt they'll have been able to test it at all as the map is probably rather rough, but hopefully it should be enough so I can get it home without too much messing around. I can then start work on it on Sunday as I still need to fit the MAP sensor and finish mounting the AFR guage as well as making a few changes to the wiring on the Innovate logging. Then the mapping begins [:D] Naturaly it's cutting it all very fine for Monday, but it's no fun unless there's a mad panic!

hey just noticed I got a mention by john in reference to Performance silicon hoses... oh and yes I do have them on my car too....well what else would I use after all they do have my initials and some people are convinced I paid to have them made specially....lol

I have some PSH hoses on mine too, do you want them back? :ROFLMAO:

That's great news about your car Peter E, I foresee a weekend of tinkering, blasting up the road, followed by more tinkering [8D]

Well it's home and it made it under its own steam [:D] Nothing terribly exciting to report yet (it was only 4 miles), I took it very gently whilst keeping a close eye on the afr's and apart from a slightly lean period at about 3k it doesn't seem that far off. I've not gone anywhere near WOT yet though. I did allow myself one 50% throttle run to about 4.5k and was mighty pleased with what happened. Somehow I think I'm going to enjoy this!

Only a few small issues so far, the piping hasn't been laid out quite the way I expected (don't know why, I didn't get a chance to speak to the mechanic) and I now need to make some changes before I'm completely happy with the layout, but I can't really complain as they got it to fit and I couldn't!

I am struggling to get it idling smoothly, which is a bit odd as i've always been able to fine tune this before when needed. For the time being I'll probably just raise the idle speed, except I can't find the setting in the Vitesse software (I even read the manual!), any hints would be gratefully appreciated. I certainly have a lot of learning to do with the piggyback in a rather short period!

Throttle response and low rpm behaviour is as before which is a big relief, so (touching wood) it's what I've been hoping might be possible, keeping the S2's low down torque/response with a seemingly linear gain as soon as the revs increase [:D]

Bet you are pleased!Looking forward to watching/listening to it "whoosh" past from a pit wall some time[:)]

Sounds great Peter - I'm afraid I won't be at Silverstone on Monday to see it - I only got the car back yesterday. Hope you get it running well for the trackday - you should be pretty quick with another 50-70hp [:D][:D]

Hope the current engine survives the boost! - keep emptying the catch tank [;)]

Great news Peter.

I can't remember seeing an idle setting in my Piggyback but I think it's still controlled by the usual 944 way of setting idle.

You know my brilliant idea to mount the catch tank so I could empty it easily from underneath the car? Well the air filter is now directly underneath it, so that knackers that plan! [:)] and don't even get me started on draining the supercharger oil, the nut is hidden and is going to be a complete pain every 5,000 miles.

Mark, I'm hoping the high rpm whistle makes up for the noise at idle, it wheezes somewhat.

Lol! Well that would explain why I couldn't find it then [:D]

Im hoping for a couple of laps in this Pete. I will bring a helmet with a black visor and a pair of gloves, so that my wide eyes and white knuckles dont put you off... [:D]

:ROFLMAO: You'd be very welcome.
Not sure how many laps I'm going to be risking on Monday, I'm sure someone will start a sweep stake as to how many laps I'll manage with the pistons staying in one piece (preferably whilst staying inside the engine...)

Here's the obligatory pics, I'm going to have to change the IC inlet pipe at some point as it's not terribly elegant and I'm unsure why the IC outlet uses the original 968 pipe and not the S2 one I bought for the job.
