The 2011 PCGB Club Championship

I looked on the Gaz web site and could not find any Gaz Gold shocks for a 968 (may just be me being stupid) but for my information - does anyone know what the technical difference is in the dampers between the standard units we are running on Ben's car and Gaz Gold units? Baz

The suspension that EMC use has special valving unique to them apparently, plus I am sure Kevin has Gaz products latest efforts before it comes out for general consumption,so his dampers are probably different to the off the peg stuff they supply on their website. Really looking forward to Oulton Park Round.[:)]

They are definitely different. The ones I have are like the retail units but specced up and built by Dave Lyons based on requirements I fed through the guy that I originally bought them through. AFAIK mine are similar to the retail units which anyone would have if they didn't get their 2-way remote reservoir GAZs from EMC. In theory if anyone calls GAZ and asks for Dave they keep records of what a particular customers build of the dampers would have been, of course this requires a knowledge of who originally specced and bought the dampers and when. The damper settings I am running are very different to those which Kev sets on Pete's S2 or 968, notwithstanding the fact that I will be experimenting with some slight alterations after Monday evening at Donny the difference is so big there is no way the valving can be anything like the same. The 2-way remote reservoir units are I believe not listed in the GAZ catalogue, only the single adjust non-remote reservoir units.

There is only 3 days to go until the next 2 rounds of the Club Championship. This Saturday 13th August at Oulton Park. Anyone going from here? Try me for spare entrance tickets -- drop me a PM.

Slightly OT but you want to try the Beetle, the shocks that Kevin and Gaz specced for that quit literally make it corner like no other car I've ever driven!!!

Er, in a good way????

[:D] It does actually seem to handle remarkably well. Just severly lacking in grunt. Lali do actually need to use the brakes in that thing?

For those that haven't seen it here's the in car footage that Marcus has posted up of his crash with Pete at Oulton on Saturday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dvy5YvpZkEs Thank goodness you guys race tough, well prepared cars!

Steve - hi I was right behind them, so saw it all happen - horrendous. (more info in my report below0 I am a bit slow reporting back on this one as I rushed home to dump things and then drive off on Sunday to re-join my family in Cornwall. The race report from my perspective below, when I find a longer more general one I'll post a link: ----------------------------------------------------------------- THE BIG ONE and THE NEARLY MAN Testing on Friday was mixed as 4 of the 6 sessions were affected by a wet or partially wet track. Finally got my foot down in the last session of the day and managed to find about 1 second from my fastest time in 2010 ie a 1m 59 flat - so heading in the right direction, although another couple of seconds would be needed to challenge for pole. Paul H was on hand analysing my datalogger and I had a few things to work on during raceday. Quali was dry and my car seemed perfect so it was just down to me. Worked my way up to speed and found another half a second on Friday testing. Managed to do 2 laps at that pace but this only got me 8th on the grid in Race 1 but a more respectable 5th slot for Race 2 with my second fastest time. Sumpter got pole again, with Morris & McAleer chasing him home. RACE 1. I had a steady start and held 8th place until Sumpter slid into the gravel at Shell early on. Morris, won it from McAleer both in 968's, with Harrison 3rd in his 964 and Demetriou 4th in Class 1. I held 7th which was 6th in class as Carniel was out ahead of me in the County Classics 944. RACE 2. The Big One referred to in the title was a nasty accident for Morris & Carniel just after the first corner when they were challenging for track position down The Avenue on the run into Cascades. They both went off to the outside of the circuit, down the grass and the impact was enough to send Morris vaulting over the barrier - ouch, ouch and ouch again. They both got out virtually unscathed and apparently one spectator & one marshal just escaped injury. Koeberle had a start line driveshaft failure in his 968 (yes, he uses a paddle clutch) and Proctor in his 993 did not feature either. The race was immediately red flagged and about 15 minutes later we lined up again with 17 of the original 21 starters. I now found myself on the same grid position in the 3rd row for the re-start but was now third. Got a good tow off the start and was in a drag to the first apex with McAleer, - luckily I had the inside line and made it stick to find myself in second place behind Sumpter. I was even pulling away a bit as McAleer and Ellis battled each other for 3rd place. Now the race was going to be shorter BUT I then failed to see the Last Lap board which came after only 5 laps -- the two guys behind me pulled out all the stops with some moves on the last half lap and I found myself crossing the line in 4th place - and I was then very surprised to see the chequered flag! Damn and blast!! I had snatched 4th out of the jaws of my first podium - hence the Nearly Man heading in the title. Demetriou in the other Hartech car had a wheel bearing failure towards the latter stages and had to limp in 10th place - Ben likes Oulton a lot but things just did not go his way today. Onto Castle Coombe for the penultimate round of races on Monday 29th August, drop by if you can.

Well done Paul, I'd already seen your times on TSL. You're not far off now and should be really pleased with those sort of improvements and your consistency [:)] It was sod's law that the PCGB round at my local track was on the same day as a trackday I'd already booked at another circuit! Hence why I couldn't make it over to watch you guys. Keep up the good work and glad to hear that Pete was OK after the smash.

Yeah PaulF's doing really well, his hard work is paying-off - well done sir! Steve, poor show on your part, I was looking forward to some cake as well - I trust you had fun on track? Looking forward to the next round at Castle Combe, a scary circuit but great fun to both drive and spectate.

Paz - hi I am looking forward to Coombe, I have unfinished business there as I have not had as good results as I had hoped in the previous years. Hopefully my current dampers will be able to cope better with the bumpy bits. Are you putting up any photos from Oulton? A load taken by Keith here -- scroll down to the last few galleries http://www.newworldmotorsport.co.uk/index.cfm/page/galleries/listid/6/subcat/433/title/Porsche%20Club%20and%20GT3%20Challenge%202011

The PCGB Championship points table has been updated, following the races at Oulton, the website is not up to date yet In Class 1, Sumpter still well clear and it is close after him. Ben holds 2nd place, Pete Morris did get points for the original start of Race 2 at Oulton so holds 3rd. McAleer now ties with me for 4th but ironically as I have finished more races and will have to drop 2 scores he is in a stronger position, so I need to pull out all the stops now! Ellis is hovering close by in 6th. Sumpter 311 Demetriou 222 Morris 217 Follett =208 McAleer =208 Ellis 200 5 races to go -- 2 at Coombe on 29th August & 3 at the Silverstone finale at the end of September.

Only 4 days or so until the next races at Castle Coombe on Monday 29th August. Anyone slotting this event into their Bank Holiday weekend?

So do that mean there will be a Boxster in PCGB races for the first time next year? Are there others?
