Who knows...in other news today all private diesels are to be banned from Bristol city from 2021....
Yes but councils / governments don't really understand engineering or even the requirements of its taxpayers,
Still not seen any air quality improvement claims for London ULEZ, just a statement about income.

So it's been a year since you stored her now Oli, have you been to have a look how she is doing?

You win the longlife battle though, as mine is now long gone [:(], the ratburger for lunch is on me [8D]

Nearly two years Smiffy! Yes, been back a couple of times to change the dessicant in the storage bag. I've not opened the bag all the way up to see how the rest of the car is as space is a little tight in the garage. However I am pleased to note that there is evidence of cats in the garage so the odds of there being mice there is slim.
However there is news from this end; we have left London and hence am planning to get the 944 out sooner than planned. Quite a lot sooner! New house will take some tidying up and work but there is a (very good) garage here and I hope to be dragging the car up from London in the next six months or so. I'll keep this thread updated!
I gathered that you had sold your S2 from your signature on another thread (Peter Empson's one about his S2 that's come back to life.) What happened? When I first knew you then you had TWO 944's. Then there was one (and a lot of darkly muttered promises that you'd never sell your S2). Now ... well, what can I say! I presume it went in order to buy the Ambleside Guest House, which also means you are no longer doing ChipsAway. Tell me more about the guest house - I have family up that way and it sounds interesting. Not as interesting as an S2 but hey .... [:)]

Yes, that definitely qualifies as one of the odder questions I've seen asked on here. You'll need to explain that one Paul.

Divers S2 went up in flames I believe Oli. Good job it wasn't a turbo eh?
Yup, S2 in flames with the occupant making a thankful escape.

Could have been very different if the occupant was trapped inside and it was a 2.7.

Flames? Oh no, very sorry to hear that. Was it the fuel lines issue? That's not good news - I seem to recall that it was quite a nice example. Black over linen, non? [:(]

Good job it wasn't a turbo ... not sure why? Given that turbos are slower than S2's then is it also fair to assume that they burn more slowly than S2's? If so then Smiffy would probably have been safer in a turbo as he'd have had more time to get out. [sm=kiss.gif]

Yay! Great news, bet you can't wait [:D]

Absolutely! The day it comes out will be a good one. A very good one. I know that it will need quite a lot of recommissioning; there was some rust that would have been cut out had I kept it on the road but I didn't bother with before mothballing it. This will mean a trip to a bodyshop and a bit of scope creep may lead to a part respray while it is there. And the wheels were a little scruffy so they may be re-painted too. And the belts will need to be changed before I start her up. I also filled the bores with oil which means it'll be a pig to get started. And the story of Smiffy's incendary S2 tells me that I ought to give the fuel lines on mine given a good looking at with a view to replacing them. And I'm half-toying with the idea of pulling the engine out and tracking down the small long-standing small oil leak that it always had. All this means it'll probably be a year or so before it's back on the road.

The other problem is that I have become quite fond of it's replacement - a 987 Cayman. It's grown on me and I now rather like it, which raises the question of what to do with it when the 944 is back on the road. Two Porsches sounds too extravagant to contemplate but I'll be very sorry to see the Croc go. (I am aware that one of my (many) failings is that I become too fond of my cars.)

I think it was the fuel lines, seem to recall he'd had the S2 engine rebuilt fairly recently too. He seems to have a predilection for burning money on 944 engine rebuilds....

. . . huh, yeah what?

Sorry, if you say "engine rebuild" 3 times I appear like BeetleJuice :ROFLMAO:

I was going to say at least you haven't bashed the shell up like Diver. Then I remembered your Tyresmoke thread [;)].

Car had a full rear quarter when it was 2 years old with a printed and hand signed certificate from Porsche for the works.

These cars are all 30 years old now and have a bit of history, like a fine Milf it’s all about the experience [;)]

Not quite the ending of the bending....[;)].

Hi Oli,

Great news to hear yours will be getting back out there much sooner than planned, though if you're planning to take the engine out I know it won't be imminent. Does your new country estate have plenty of space for car maintenance? I was always mightily impressed at the things you managed to do on the roadside in the East End of London, way more than I ever did in my lovely 3000sqft workshop [:)] I'll never know for certain what caused my fire as the entire engine bay (and front of the car) was gutted, but there was a lot of fuel spraying around so it's safe to assume something that carried fuel had split or started leaking.

Yes we decided to step out of the rat race and bought a small B&B in the Lakes back in the March to gently while away the years until our proper retirement. Amazing business acumen that we were able to trade for two weeks before having to shut down for the summer [&o] but what a glorious summer it was. We've managed to walk every fell from our doorstep multiple times in glorious weather and hardly seen a soul as we did it. It was like living in the 19th century with no cars anywhere to be seen, which was total contrast to the hordes that returned the first few months that people were able to travel again. Really looking forward to our first Christmas here, now that it has quietened down a bit. Really miss the old girl butd I'm starting to think about a Macan now [:-] as we seem to be surrounded by them ( I must have spotted 10 on driveways and outside houses in the village which only has about 1500 population ).

I guess there must be a profit in the B&B business, well last year anyway, lets all hope that 2021 is a far better year for us all, as I for one am sick of the sight of these walls, been sort of indoors for 8 months now,

if it was not for the bike and car, think I might have gone insane or up for murder, one or the other

Thought I was done with bikes, sold my BMW S1000RR around 18 months ago. Feeling the pull of a Ducati 1198S or a Suzuki GSX-R1000R now though. 40 years of litre bikes got into my blood I guess.

:ROFLMAO: who doesn't enjoy a fine Milf

Mine had a brand new front wing after an american service mans wife decided to side-swipe me on the A14 near Cambridge (she was in one of those huge Pajero trucks) and denied all knowledge after I managed to get her to pull over with a very poorly looking 944 (almost swiped me into the central armco... Came with a Porsche certificate from the approved bodyshop.

Smiffy!

Hey, great to hear from you. Sorry to hear about the S2. I hope that the insurance company gave you a good payout. Given the stories on here about fuel lines a few years ago I am going to have a good look at them on mine when I get it out from under the cobwebs!

A B&B in the lakes, eh? That's a bit of a change from taking dents out in Northampton. Whereabouts? My family is from near Borough in Furness and it's a very lovely part of the world. The walking is excellent and the local pubs so very much better than the 'bars' that people prop up dahn sarf. Sorry to hear that business was thumped by Covid but if you are seriously considering a Macan then things can't be too bad!

It's no country estate here in Cheltenham but it does have an excellent garage! Very (very) large single, so you can put the car in it and open both doors fully and walk around the front and back with ease. Doing work on the car in it is an utter revelation to doing work on a car in London; being able to carry on working after it gets dark, being able to leave tools out when you go for a cup of tea, being able to half-do a job one day and leave it all up on jacks and stands overnight to finish the next day - this is bliss compared to working by the side of the road in London. (The lowest point of that caper was doing the water pump one November evening in the rain. With torches. Lying in the gutter while water streamed down it wasn't a laugh.)

Hope that all is well otherwise. Good that you are still on this forum even though you no longer own a 944 (I at least still own one, even if I don't drive it!) It's good to see some old faces.

I'll update this thread when my S2 sees the light of day again.
