The wait is over

Going to speak to the man who does the seats about the carpets. Apparently he does both. Although from memory the carpets aren't bad. I think its always had the mats in there and they looked pretty thick and fluffy still from what I saw. They might come up ok with a good shampoo and clean.

When he beautified my Linen sports seats he replaced the leather on the driver bolster, restuffed some parts of the seat, fixed the piping put a new finish all over the seats and whilst the seats were out gave the interior the mother of all interior valets, when I originally owned the car in 1993 and it was super low miles still back then it did not look as mint as it does now...The guy is a magician with interiors, when the racing season is over I will give my red 944 in.

Can anyone share the details of this magician?
As my interior is in need of a touch-up and it is one of only a few with the full leather option so I can't find a good replacement.

Excellent Mark I'm truly looking forward to seeing what this guy car do. How long will roughly do you think he'll need my car for? I'm not sure I can bare to go without driving it again[:(]

This picture was taken an hour ago and the man with the spray gun was in the next room waiting for me so he could start. She should be all red now. Will have three coats by 9 tonight. Then sanded and finished with a clear coat by the end of tomorrow[:D] After that the re-assembly begins. I've seen some photos with the car all put together and panels fitted, she finally looks right.[:)]

p.s. you can't see it very well in the photo but he's bought the original stone guard stuff used by the factory. Apparently only one place sells it now?

Do a search for Classic car services(that's the name of his business),Car trimmers,Leicester, sorry I don't have a link to his website,He did a full retrim of my 205 Gti aswell. He had an ok website if I recall, only a small place it's a family business handed down from father to son.The refurb was great value,he will need to book you in but the car will get turned around in a couple of days Ben so you will be driving her again before you know it..

I thought it was a standard Wurth product? Paul Smith experimented with it IIRC, when he did some touching up on the S2.

I'm very excited! Got the phone call tonight to say the car is about done. They're polishing and putting on a few final details like some aluminium surrounds around the exhaust to stop the bodywork melting (again!). Only trouble he's had putting it back together is the passenger electric window has been playing up. Some kind of electrical gremlin they are fixing right now. You forget just how much work goes into a job like this. When I got there the other day the doors were completely gutted out, just bare panels. I barely paid any attention to it but striping all that out with the wiring and gubbins is a serious job on its own.

I've been persuaded to leave the badge panel as it was. I was discussing in another thread with someone whether it had any performance advantage to vent the badge panel.. possibly not as they did it with the 924 T and then left it with the more powerful 944 T? He just said sitting there finished it looks 'the balls' and it would be a shame to ruin the smooth look of the front but cutting holes in it. So Saturday is going to be the re-birth of the all new, and rather more understated WUF.

edit to add sorry Paul I'm not sure, they said it took forever and a day to dry? Does that sound like the stuff?

Patiently waiting for lots of pics when it's finished Ben

Just saw your other post and I bet you'll be wanting to replace lots of little trim pieces that look tired once the paintwork is immaculate. The OPC is your best bet for these and I replaced quite a few when mine had paintwork done too

I don't want to show too much while she's still got the final lacker coat and blocking back yet to be done plus she's looking a bit dull now as its not been polished yet but.. this is what the finish looks like now on those rough fibreglass wings, and this is in the extremely harsh inspection bay where WUF originally looked like a right hash of swirls and imperfections (I thought it looked immaculate under normal light outside?!)

Now there is nothing, not the tiniest pimple, swirl or change to disrupt the reflection. Just a perfectly smooth surface.

Lighting makes a huge difference to the degree of imperfections you see, and the quality of the finished article. If it's that good under harsh lighting let's see it in the real daylight!

I can't wait to see it all finished. If it's as good as Ben says it is then it will be real good to know of a good shop in Northampton that can take on older cars with corrosion and maybe do a bit of fibreglassing at the same time [:)]

Ben, just to clarify, you have replaced the old OEM metal front wings with new f/g ones? Is that the only material change? I'd be curious how much weight you save by just doing that? Don't suppose you know the weight beforehand?

I've got a weight slip somewhere in the history file, rather heavy according to Rick but I haven't seen it yet. I've changed the wings and the badge panel to fibreglass (just the bonnet left now up front) but although this may sound silly there was a lot of paint on the car, some areas were really thick. I reckon that will have an effect on the figures now its been taken back to bare metal all over.

Weight isn't something I'm really bothering with on this car but (mainly for clarity if I ever get electrical problems) I'm going to get an auto electrician to go through the car and rip out all the unnecessary wiring like the old Porsche alarm, telephone kit etc etc. I don't have the spare tyre either. Overall I'm hoping to get the car close to the factory figure of what was it? 1350kg for the later cars? I think Rick said it was 1430kg with 2/3rds of a tank of fuel. That's a big discrepancy

Yes it wouldn't surprise me that it was in the 1400kg + area with all the goodies on board. If you get a chance to weigh it all the same, it would be interesting. Looks great so far and I can't wait for the final pics. Very nice.

Yes mine was just over 1400kg with fumes in the tank when I had it weighed several years ago. Personally I think the 1350kg in some handbooks is a tad optimistic for all but the early 220 Turbos that aren't specced with aircon and the multi adjustable electric seats

Seems to be the general opinion about the stock weight figures Paul. Had our local Porsche Club Capt say the same thing about his GT3. Funny that Porsche are said to be conservative when they announce performance figures but perhaps a tad optimistic with weights?

I have mine at about 1285 with mid tank and no driver. Want it lighter though to make up for incoming cage.

Well what a shitty shitty day[:(] I was supposed to be picking my car up today but instead I had to watch for 4 hours as an auto electrician finally narrowed down the cars sudden inability to start to the fact the MSD ignition unit had failed![&o][&o][&o] all the sensors are working, all the supplies, earths, signals and coils are fine. It's just not sending any output voltage to the four coils []. I don't know whether it was them cleaning the engine bay or a total coincidence but the end result is the car is as dead as a door nail and any chance of getting it back before I leave for Uni on tuesday has just evaporated. [][][:(][][]

I have tried to make myself feel a little better by uploading the only half decent tunnel clip we got from le-mans but even that is disappointing[&o]
