Thicker steering wheel

yes but it`ll set u back best part of £1000-mine did 2 yrs ago at opc hatfield(what with new airbags etc etc)

Jesus, I wonder if they wud do me a deal for that and a short shifter. Maybe an OPC somewhere wud have one surplus and might do me a deal. I'll have to call about

I guess this is why its not specked from new that often. Bottom line is that £1000 to hold a different steering wheel is the wrong price. In this day and age with OPC"s being more competitive im suprised they not reduced in cost.

Its a different market now. Try speaking to a few OPC's adn see if ther eis a good deal to be had.[:D]

My local OPC is looking into into it but they didnt seem to clued up on it. If short shifter as an option is 350 quid how can a new steering wheel be a grand. wrong rpice

david, specced from new its only aboiut £3-400 .sadly i forgot to tick that box-never again!!
that is because when replacing it you have to have the extra airbag(different from standard wheel)and other parts, wheras if you specced it new you wouldnt need the standard wheel and airbag etc in effect when changing to thicker wheel you end up paying for 2 complete lots of components for both wheels.still it does feel much better[:D] and certainly makes sure i remember to tick the flippin box next time!!
good luck with your search

ive got them callingf me back today hopefully so will let u know the outcome. was only going to deal with OPC anyway

There are two different "thicker" steering wheel options available. One is for the Sport or round airbag wheel , the other is for the standard or triangular airbag wheel. The wheel is identified as XPA which stands for extra padding , these are typically only supplied as part of the exclusive options list , as a result they cannot be found in the spare parts catalogue. The airbag for the XPA and OEM wheel are interchangeable , providing its a like for like wheel , ie either sport or standard design. The multi function wheels (fitted to cars with PCM) have a soft leather covering which gives a better and slightly more padded feel, these can be ordered as spare parts but only available for the triangular airbag option. Recovering of the existing wheel is probably the cheapest option , though occasionally a good deal comes up on e bay for a multi function wheel or Techart/ Raid/ Gemballa option. There is a Raid steering wheel advertised on e bay at the moment , this is a complete wheel with airbag and will fit any 997/ Cayman/ Boxster. A techart wheel allows the use of the OEM porsche emblemed airbag be it round or triangular as they have two designs. The exchange price for a techart wheel is around 900 pounds but the quality and finish is second to none. The techart wheels are retrimmed such that the overall diameter of the wheel is not increased inspite of a much thicker padded rim. I have a techart wheel on my car with multi function controls and OEM airbag.

If I didn't order the stock thicker wheel from the factory already I would be after a TechArt steering wheel myself!

Yes the techart is very nice

Alternatively go to an independent and get an OEM or OEM lookalike for less than half the price [:D]

David

Try design 911, see what deal you can get*. I think they might even be able to source the Techart wheel.

There based in Hainult so quite convenient if your an Essex guy.

if its an OEM part fitted by a recognised Porsche specialist it should not effect your warranty
