Thicker steering wheel

Tks matey ill check it out. I am normally very particular about keeping to Porsche parts but at that costs ill have a look elsewhere.
I really like the look of the steering wheel i have but that thicker feel wud make all the difference.

Finally got the quote....£1385 fitted with airbag. HAHAHAHAHA what a joke

not hugely surprised sadly-as i said at the beginning o fthis thread-i paid £1000 2 yrs ago for mine...
it is much better though!![:D]

I agree it is much better but a third of the cost Ill go for short shift which is a good extra. I'll have to keep my eyes on places like eBay or try other OPC's for any spares they have. Tks 4 all the feedback thou

It is a real improvement over the standard one buty at that money ill treat the car to short shift for a third of the cost and keep an eye on ebay for a wheel.
Many tks for all the feedback

Fitting the steering wheel can be done by yourself with very few tools. All you need is a spline tool and a long flat blade screwdriver. The whole job takes about half an hour including disconnection and reconnection of the battery. If you replace the wheel with the same design of airbag there is no need to buy a new airbag. I saw a black Raid steering wheel with adaptor boss advertised on  ebay earlier this week. Finding an XPA or CPA wheel second hand is going to be a lucky find , especially in the correct colour. If I were to order a new car I would tick the short shift and exclusive extra padded wheel as must have options along with PSE. The car may not go any quicker but its much more enjoyable to drive !

I think having the existing wheel repadded is the best value for money option. Here is an example of a Boxster wheel repadded in alcantara by K baggs trimming here in the UK. You can pick up a standard or multi function wheel on e bay for as little as 10 pounds.

This is what the finished item looks like after repadding.

Try design 911, see what deal you can get*. I think they might even be able to source the Techart wheel.

There based in Hainult so quite convenient if your an Essex guy.

if its an OEM part fitted by a recognised Porsche specialist it should not effect your warranty

Sorry Tom but the nightmare stories I have heard about Design911 I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole! I know Vividracing have just opened up a UK importing division which would probably save you quite a bit on parts:

Found an OPC y"day that wud do Thicker Steering wheel fitted for £650 and quoted me £275 for short shift as well.....Where did Colchester get £1385 from!

Just make sure that the wheel they quote is the XPA extra padded wheel and not just a leather padded CPA option. There is a big difference , one has just a softer leather and marginally thicker the other is substantially thicker.

Sorry just read your previous message on XPA. I'll call them today to check. There are used cars on the Porsche web site with the thicker steering wheel so they shouldn't get it wrong

[FONT=arial"]997 347 980 00 A34 is the (XPA) thicker sport steering (round airbag) assuming you have a manual car and black interior.

Ah thats brilliant many tks. The original OPC i spoke to recons i already have the thincker steering wheel for my year and model car. I have the 3 spoke steering wheel so see what this comes back with. Im due a call from OPC East London tomorrow so ill mentio this part number cheers

Here is a comparison between the standard sport wheel and the extra padded version.

Here is the standard wheel , this is a multifunction so it has deviated stiching , smooth leather and a leather airbag cover, but the thickness is approximately the same as standard

As the above comparison , here is the extra padded version of the same wheel. This is what you should get if you order a padded wheel in the triangular airbag design (minus the multi function buttons and airbag of course)

As you can see from the recovered wheel below, the triangular airbag wheel is not as significant in terms of difference to the standard wheel when extra padded, for this reason I would personally opt to revover a second hand wheel rather than buy a new one from porsche.

If are prepared to spend big money to get something individual , I think the techart item still reigns king.
