Track day or garage

You are 100% right, Oliver.

Couldn't agree with you more. (Had two and driven many on track). They are even more fun than an Ultima GTR in my opinion, and I'm building a GTR.
 
On the original question of Garage it or track it you seemed to be concerned with residuals. I think if you can see yourself keeping it for the very long term then just enjoy using it for it was intended, keep it on the black bits and maintain it correctly.

Genuine straight cars that are properly maintained with all their history will always have good residuals. IMHO. Take a 73 RS. If you find a genuine car with good history and matching numbers does it really matter if it's had a full respray, engine / box rebuild and a recorded 120,000 miles?

Alternatively you could take Olivers advice and get the 993, I'll buy your 964 RS for what you paid for it. [:)]

You hit the nail on the head, i'ts true to say its not all about having the fastest car out there.

Years ago I bought a mk1 gti Golf (which I sold recently) spent £8-£10 grand making it go,stop,handle etc... purely for track day use. In more recent years I had a Caterham superlight R and tracked it. I had more fun in the Golf than I ever had in the superlight because in the Caterham I had nobody to play against. Things have moved on since the Golf days but It really doesnt matter how fast you're car is as long as you pick out someone else with an equally powered car.

Oh and how much can you pick up a 968 CS for these days?

Hi Lee, you are a frequent poster to the forum, but in your initial post for this thread, is it right that you have owned an RS for 5 years and only done 2 track days in it ?
I think later in the thread you indicate you have done several track days , presumably not in the RS , but enough to know what track days are about and develop a measure of skill/control.
If these are the facts then - my advice - you should seriously consider selling , the timing is good . The track day market right now reminds me of the technology share market circa 1999 , very buoyant... but rising prices, reducing noise levels and problematic insurance for both organisers and participants are reasons to be wary. Either your next buyer is a track day enthusiast ( see previous comment) or a collector/garage filler looking for a mint low miles car ( as yours is now).

FWIW I bought a mint RS in Aug 2002 and 12 trackdays later in Aug 2003 put it into the tyre wall at Oulton Park pulling 5300 in 4th - bit of a shaker for car and driver [:mad:] ....but I'm not bothered about the next buyer so am going to carry on , its only money [;)]...

Recommend driver training and Dunlop Formula R D01J tyres on the RS mags if you are going to ignore the sensible advice herein.

If grin per £ is a factor, then get a Caterham. Drive to the circuit, have an absolute hoot, embarrass most Porsches and drive home. Nothing is more fun (unless it's tipping down).


Oliver, you also have to look at the Caterham.......the 964RS is also a beautiful car...[8|]
 
The main benefit of 964RS vs Caterham, having owned both, is that the RS is more usable on motorways and so can be driven to different tracks more comfortably. The RS has more interior space and a few more creature comforts (like wind up windows!) as well. The Seven is amazing with the hood down on a sunny day, though, when you can smell the hot oil and hear the buzzsaw rasp of exhaust reverb against hedgerows. :))

The RS is a big Caterham, but the seven is still the benchmark goddamit!!

track the RS - it was designed for it! only done 2 in mine so far (since october '03) but loved it to bits. does not really matter about which is the fastest/best etc - its all about the fun of getting somewhere near the limits of the 911 (which I hav'nt in honesty!).

no matter what you track it will be fun - but I reckon what gives the 911 the edge (over 968 & boxster) is trying to tame the beast (as so to speak) - the feeling having gone (slightly) sideways in a 911 is far more exciting than in a 968 or Boxster (from experience) - unless it ends in tears [:mad:]

if you want to have an investment, don't buy a car....despite what Des says [;)]

Matt....bricks and mortar that's my game, RS will not make you rich but certainly keep it's money and appreciate.......they don't make 'em anymore!!!!![:-]

I would guess that a few of the 2051 cars made have met their happy race track in the sky over the years and this will compound the increase in rarity which will further uplift prices..........So what's the answer Lee? Track or Garage?[&:]

When the RS is off the road I have to cane other peoples' machinery - gave me a good overview. Driven everything from Ultima GTR to GT3 Mk2 to 968CS to TVR T350 to Superlight Caterhams etc. all on the track. Better than being a one horse wonder like the Merkin Man!

Well Lee, looks like you are no further forward and so the end of the thread looms. I did at least learn something ....curiosity forced me to look up the word 'merkin' on google, as it is obviously relevant to driving fast on the track , and possibly makes the RS go even faster.
I guess Melv can do a better price on one than the local OPC ?

So Lee a bit of each at least that's an improvement on keeping the car locked up in wool...I would guess most RS owners probably do the same like myself...just a few days each year, so when are you venturing out Lee?
 
Hi Lee, what a silly question to post[:D] If you want to do track days in a car that was designed at the outset for just that job then keep the RS it will reward you with thrills spills and the occasional fright! And unlike the caterhams etc it will get you there in relative comfort and take you home again!
If you want an investment go and buy a painting (of your RS maybe by a very respected artist) and put it on the wall! [;)] or fine wine, it will take up less space and cost less to insure.
It's like buying a Cayenne and just using it for the school run[:D][:D]
 
I think some of the answer lies in the current condition of the car. If it is pristine at present then it would be a shame to get it stone rashed or risk crashing it on track. If however it is like mine with a certain lived in patina but strong mechanicals, then use it like I do/intend to i.e. drive it somewhere just for the fun of it, show it at Porshe get togethers, it is after all a very special car, track it when you are sure of the circuit and those around you, clean it, look at it, savour it and put it away until the urge to drive overcomes you once more.

All of what you guys say makes sense except not all of you can see it from my perspective.

It's very difficult if you're someone like me who gets a huge amount of satisfaction out of just keeping his ULTIMATE Porsche looking spot on and enjoying the Sunday morning drive or whatever. The problem is that I also get amazing satisfaction out of track days.

I believe that this car is irreplacable. That is why I would find it much easier to perhaps buy a GT3 to wring its neck and drive it without the fear that it cant be replaced. When I originally bought the RS this situation was perhaps not as relevant as it is today.

Thrashed crashed and repaired is not something I could put up with.

And Lawrence, I cant get excited about wine or paintings and how can you buy a Cayenne to do anything with when its uglier that my Mother-in-law. Perhaps you could if your name is Stevie Wonder..[;)]

Bedford when you're doing one Des and I will hold you wholey responsible.[:D]
