Track Experience day 12th September

Yeh, Odiham should be fine on tyres I would say. No way will they get as hot.

I need like a hot scraper to get off the extra rubber on mine before I take it through some twisty bends again!

Alex

mine looked like that on Saturday - I Had what I thought was a ring of thick string melted into the tyre until I realized it was bit of rubber. gave a pig of vibration for the first hour or so of the drive and dine on Sunday. Once the pace upped funnily enough the vibrations disappeared as did the extra bits of rubber.

Tyres still look like they spent an evening with Freddy Kruger mind.

Unfortunately we are forgetting the high speed straight - this will create lots of heat in the tyre once the speed gets high as will the high speed stop for the corner. But if the rest of the lap is long swoopy corners that should be OK on the tyres.

I have a feeling, and far from being a expert in the matter, that braking and cornering puts a lot more heat into the wheel/brake area than just speed alone. At Llandow it seems the unrelenting cornering/braking, without any time in between on a lengthy straight to dissipate any heat, caused the tremendous build up. Put it another way, if you drove at 160mph down the autobahn the tyres would get pretty warm but the brakes would be cold. There is a lot of transference of heat from the brakes to the wheels/tyres on a track. Although there will be a lot of heat when you brake from high speed at the end of the Odiham runway the brakes will be much cooler to begin with? We shall see!![8D][:D]

I am thinking of going to find myself a nice big quiet roundabout today and go round and round and round until the excess rubber starts coming off...

Removed all the junk off mine on the Sunday [:D]

going round and round apart from being slightly fun may put more heat into the near side [;)]

IMHO

OK, I'm off to run my route for tomorrow then. Hopefully that will alleviate the issue a little...

Just a heads up chaps - not likely your Porsche insurance extends to Oldiham, allegedly its not currently on the MSA list that the insurers use.

TS - yep the long straight will cool the brakes and not overly heat the tyres, I was musing on the big stop at the end. if that is followed by some tight twisties we'll be getting a heat and cool cycle in each lap, not so Good for the longevity of the tyres but good fun.[:D]

If its mostly long swoopies it'll be very light on the tyres[:)]

Just like Llandow, I wasn't planning on getting track insurance cover. There seems to be run offs around the whole track and it is SO wide that the risk is pretty minimal in my eyes.

To be honest, the reason I was pushing so hard on the corners at Llandow was because I wasn't having much fun on the straights (5 secs of acceleration followed by 5 secs of braking). At Odiham I am planning to have all my fun on the straights and just use the corners to get back to the beginning of the runway [:)][:)] So I will be staying out of anyone's way that are concentrating on fast 'lap' times.

By the way, a 1.5hr drive today did help the grip stability today but there is still a LOT of excess rubber on the tyres which is obviously going to take a while to get off.
