Trackday-RS day Oulton Park,,09.

Ok folks, here goes with the report... First off ,, it was great to meet so many folk , both new + regulars,+ put faces to usernames...+ GREAT to see Pete Empson had his car on the road.. Well done m8... There were 5 of us upholding the front runner banner. 4 / 968CS,s + a 944 "hybrid" The day dawn,d COLD but dry...+ bright sunshine...[:D] Ice on the roof of the car...BBBRrrrrr.... Anyway once at the circuit + after a quick peek over the pit wall, the excitement grew, it was BONE DRY + no ice on the circuit at all.. F.A B....Oulton is a difficult track in the dry let alone wet or greasy...And seeing as there would be some realy quick machinery circulating, the dry track was VERY welcome... The usual unloading of the car + set up for the days activities ensued,,,It can get a real chore sometimes ,, but well worth it... Followed by the usual signing on + drivers briefing.... Then. time to get on track....[:D][:D][:D][:D] Started out slow to get some heat into the tyres + brakes, then suddenly a stopage...damn...aparently a GT3 had taken a liking to the tyre barrier on lakeside,, aparently it wasnt pretty ..[:(][:(][:(][:(]. I hope the occupants are all ok..??? So a bit of adjustments to the suspension [ stiffening ] ensued, + after the restart , we got into the stride... LOTS of lapper was had, + numerous pax laps were given. I hope you folks that got rides enjoyed them as much as i did giving them...You all seemed to as there were lots of smiling faces upon dissembarking...[:D][:D][;)][;)] Just worked out that i did 60 laps of the circuit. At a fastest lap of 2.06 mins...For a road car with most of its acutriments still intackt,,thats pretty fast....[:D][:D][:D]. As the PCGB race cars are doing it in around 1.58 ish...Not that i was timing ,, of course... The car didnt miss a beat , it performed faultlessly all day...[:D][:D][:D], Just how it should.... There were some REALY nice bits of Pork at the circuit, either in the paddock [Although i didnt have any time to look at them as i was busy driving].[:D][:D][:D] , or out on track , being used properly...[;)][;)][;)]. And lots of entusiastic owners milling around all day long... The standard of driving on the whole was great, very curteous , just a few of the RS lads didnt want to look in there rear view mirrors, either that or they didnt want to be passed by a "suposedly" slower car...[;)][;)][:D][:D][;)][;)] Anyway. i hope those of you that came had as good a day as i did + heres to next years RS day.... Ive got a few pics of the day , ill post them later + also a bit of video... Wot he sed ^^^^^!!! Great day, great atmosphere & great weather - what more could you ask for?! Many thanks to Dave for the pax laps and it is amazing just how quick a properly sorted 968 (or 944) can be, when driven by someone who knows what they're doing!!! The speed that Dave's 968 could carry through the twisty stuff put a lot of far more expensive cars to shame. Might have also convinced me to start stripping the excess weight out of mine...[8|][;)] Very friendly atmosphere on the day with lots of friendly faces and loads of nice cars to ogle too. Many thanks also to Melv for the hot laps in the 964 Cup car - 300bhp in 1100kg on slicks means loads of speed everywhere and as for the brakes....[:D][:D] I also have some pics to post a little later. ETA Forgot to mention how good it was to finally meet the legendary Mr Empson and his equally legendary 944. The car sounded and looked great Peter and I applaud your commitment in getting the car there at all, never mind actually getting out on track![:D] No missing the whiteness of your colour choice either[;)]

Thought it was a brilliant day and echo what was said about Peter's efforts to get there and he seemed to be going well on the track, brought my helmet but never managed a run out in any of the cars, i would loved to have gone out in Melv's 964 as i thought it looked subperb. Why can't the front fours sound like some of the 911's. absolute music as they nailed it past the pits, the 996 GT3 was a right off, but no body hurt also the very clean 968 CS that went off had a threaded section on a trick wishbone shear off which in turn let the front strut assembly on the offside go where ever it wished to sticking him into run off bit and destroying the front wing.

Just added a vid clip, about 12 mins long... [link=http://www.vimeo.com/user1387809/videos]http://www.vimeo.com/user1387809/videos[/link]

The quality of that video is superb Dave - really crisp.

Cheers Nick. Thats my first attempt at vid uploading + editing. So apologies for the "boring" bits.I actually have 60 mins of action......I had the camera facing backwards at one point, so i might just post some of that soon.. Im hoping to get better as the season progresses...[:D][;)][:D]

I wish I had gone now [:(]. I missed out on booking on to do the track day but was thinking on Thursday of driving up anyway. Unfortunately I had a lot of work to do and was still in the office at 6:30 Friday when I bet you guys where on your way home with a big dirt grin still present. Great pictures guys.

Great video Dave. [:D] I've also been messing around with the footage I took this evening and have just uploaded a [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJklsCjPlRE]10 min compilation[/link] (mostly of me being overtaken [:)]). You Tubes compression hasn't helped the quality so I might try to host it somewhere else tomorrow.

Dave, Many thanks for the passenger laps ,greatly & appreciatively enjoyed-I have to agree with Nick-your car seems extremely well sorted.I can see now that it is no use going on a track day on road tyres. As I wasn't timing you on my in -car laps ,I couldn't possibly comment, nor did I look at your speedo,it was exciting enough seeing cars getting out of your way. As to the video,I would like take some credit for holding the battery pack steady in my crotch.[:)][:)]. Colin.

I regret not being able to attend. Oulton is my favourite track: my family has a very strong connection with the circuit and my grandfathers ashes were scattered there... Simon

Peter, your Superlight looks great, and doing exactly what you built it for, can't wait to see it in the flesh [:)]

Colin. Credit where credits due... You did a sterling job of battery pack holder....[;)][;)][;)] Pete. Try Vimeo, thats where i hosted mine + it seems good... Your car sounds noisy m8. Or did you have your window open.???? Causing some buffeting.???[;)][:D]

I bobbed down myself for an hour or 2 in the afternoon, just in time to grab something to eat [:D] My Dad brought me down in his 924, which was the only one there i was pretty shocked to see, but there was only a handful of 944's too. Was a great day and fantastic weather, i wish i had been there longer and found everyone else!

Open windows are a bit too luxurious Dave, they were fixed shut as time ran out to refit the mechanism. I'm now toying with the idea of fixed acylic ones with sliders. Got lots more ideas to save another few kilo's too [:D] (and no it doesn't involve a diet for me :ROFLMAO:). Thanks for the tip off about Vimeo, I might give it a go. The raw footage isn't great (the camera was a real cheapy) and if you press the HQ button on youtube that seems to have appeared overnight then you get reasonably close to the original.

Another section of vid, this time rear facing...Some of it showing the "Orange" one...[;)][;)] [link=http://www.vimeo.com/3524733]http://www.vimeo.com/3524733[/link] Enjoy...

Peter: instead of sliders, which only look smart when theyre brand new, had you considered vents in the rear quarters? You cut a vent in the rear quarter polycarbonate to suit a clear angled brake duct of the typre sold by Demon-Thieves. The ducting that you then attach can be directed anywhere.

Does look good but I'd like to be able to pay at tolls and the like through the window, otherwise it's a bit of a nightmare with a harness on (I avoided the M6 toll for this reason the other day). I can't believe it's that tricky to make a slider that doesn't scratch the window, but I have a feeling I wont find anything off the shelf that I like.
