Turbo Cup value

In relation to the Turbo Cup cars there was a very interesting 944 race car in the Coys auction at Eynsham this weekend - A 944 GTR [:D]. This was not the same as the Le Mans cars that raced in 1981 and 1982 but was built for the American IMSA GTO/GTU races in 1985. The current owner explained (while I eavesdropped) that this one was not a factory car but was built by Al Holbert, then boss of motorsport for Porsche USA

I poked my camera everywhere I could, and here is a view of the cockpit showing the torque tube inside the car suspended a few inches above the flat floor. The dashboard has gauges for head and cylinder temps as well as the usual oil and coolant temperature. The big red warning light to the right of the wheel was labelled oil pressure.

The rear arches and bodywork were jointed in the middle and secured to the chassis with quick release fasteners so the whole back end can just lift off.

The owner lifted off the fibreglass bonnet and the engine had a number of interesting features. First off it looks like a 2 litre 924 to me, though the factory GTRs were built using 2.5 litre 944 engines

The intercooler was a huge affair at the front of the engine bay. It was fully 6 inches deep and spread from the top of the engine bay right down to the bottom. This suggests that very high boost was being used, a book by David Vivian (Porsche 924,928,944,968) suggests 600 bhp came from the cars entered in 1986. The intercooler was flanked by two coolant radiators at an angle in the front corners.

The pipe from the intercooler to the throttles looks very narrow and I see no obvious AFM, maybe some sort of MAF sensor is in there?

I wanted to hang around when this lot came under the hammer, but annoyingly they were one car away from it when we had to get back and collect our trophies and prizes for the Register Challenge (picture of grinning idiots to follow [:D])

I know the car failed to sell at an auction earlier in the year. Was anyone around to hear what happened this time (and how much it went for)?
 
I saw the car at the Coys auction at Autosport earlier in the year. It failed to sell there but the background information was really patchy. In fact I know more about it from the posts above that Coys did on the day!

At £40 - 50k it is really limited in the number of potential purchasers, as most will be spending on equivalent priced air-cooled stuff. Although the thing looks stunning in the flesh, and it would be mine if my numbers came up, I can't see it having sold this time round either. But i could be wrong?

As for body panels, I know a chap who has made moulds from a genuine GTR (one of the Canon cars) and will make them to order, although to the un-initiated outside of these circles it may make a 944 look like its been Chav'd my the Max-P brigade.

You certainly get a lot in the package, even a nice trailer to tow it around on. I wish they'd hurry up and update the catalogue to see if it sold or not.

I've seen some pictures on the Clubautosport site with their version of the rear end with the wide arches. IMHO its definately the worst angle of the car, but they had to fit those wide rear wheels in there somehow. The one at Coys was wearing 11.75 inch rear tyres [:eek:]
 
I know that car very well and looked after it for a period

Its a 924GTR, Ive had to correct a previous owner about this before.

Its history is rather interesting and goes back prior to 1982
