Turbo for sale

this was maybe done but I can't remember, could there be a thread with spec, date and the price people have actually sold for, just a thought. Would I think give some people a bit of a surprise. I reckon most 944s sell for 20%+ less than advertised.

 
totally OT but there is a good episode of car sos where they do a triumph stag. They get one with a totally stock orig cooling system tested with modern efficiency testing gear and there are no issues. They put the overheating "myth" down to poor QC at the factory and lack of bleeding, setup time etc.
 
Supposedly QC at the factory was poor but back in the day it was reckoned not running the correct coolant used to corrode the waterways in the heads and clog the radiator. Timing chains used to stretch and needed changing when they started rattling apparently.

sounds like they built a system that was fine provided every component was 100%. Not something that would stand up and be reliable in the real world. I'm a software architect and see this all the time in the software world. BL build quality was a bad joke in those days. Road & Track magazine (the most influential car magazine in North America at the time) was sent a Rover 3500 for review and they had to stop by a suspension shop to have the suspension bolts tightened and an alignment done! After that they said it was lovely to drive but the biggest piece of junk they'd ever seen when it came to build quality.

Found the details eventually. Possibly better to put the pictures seperate from the description! I'd deduct a grand for the horrible number plates: why go to that much effort and not buy a nice set of standard ones, or the German font type? [:'(]

I don't know the car, but again the mileage would put it outside the collector market being over the supposedly magic 100K, but there could be a lot of jobs needing doing. That last service was nice, and shows EXACTLY why an £8K car might be a better deal than a £6K car sometimes.

If that car sells at that price, the one we are talking about here might be even more of a bargain than I first thought. I still think the £10K area is right for useable, not museum-piece, standard turbos: plenty of work done, plenty of mileage, plenty of life left in them. Getting up to £15K is really more for the speculators, who will mothball a car with low miles and rarely, if ever, use them.

I'm obviously out of touch on pricing if this is accurate. Wouldn't this have been about £5k last year? If this 220 bhp car with 215k miles is now £10k, what's a similar condition 250 bhp car with, say 100k miles, worth now?

Well Martin sold is ~50k late Turbo for circa £18k iirc, but the last ~100k one I know of sold for around £14k.

It's a tough one, as I would tend to agree that 215k miles would feel like high mileage when spending £10k on a car, and that is coming from someone who has never really had lower mileage cars. However, as is always said with these cars, it's far more important to judge on condition, history and how the car feels/drives in the metal - rather than disregard purely on mileage.

I looked at a low owner, well maintained (according to paperwork) 2.7 a couple of years back that had only covered ~90k miles - it was horrible. You could just tell it had not been used much and had suffered for it, just felt heavy & lethargic on the test drive. I ended up buying an S that had covered ~120k miles that felt and looked far fresher than the lower miled 2.7.

I also bought my 944 Turbo with a possible mileage discrepancy (lack of early history - which I am trying to gather info on), but I took the car at face value, it had great history for the last 15 years, even better within the last 12 months - and ultimately it felt really good on the test drive, so I didn't worry too much about whether the indicated mileage was correct or not.

It will always make a difference for a collector, but for a car that is going to be used, I'd still buy the best car I could find in terms of maintenance and body condition, rather than getting too hung up on mileage.

I will say though, I am happier accepting high mileage for my run of the mill, load lugger type cars rather than a weekend toy, but I will never be one to pay over the odds for low mileage cars.

I wish the seller good luck and hope he gets a fair price. At the end of the day, there are less and less of these for sale. 22 cars on AT, not one a Turbo.

 
Looks like the silver one was snapped up from AT as soon as the link was posted here. I wonder if anyone from the forum bought it? If so it would be good to get some feedback regarding condition etc.
 
I'm such a sceptic but i'm willing to bet that £14k never changes hands for the red g reg, it is ebay after all!
 
very close, the guy is sometimes on here, I'm sure thats his own car and there was a thread about it - maybe that was tipec
 
What I can't work out is whether or not the eBay seller of the red turbo, "performance-classic-historic" is one and the same as
"The Throttle Shop"?

Feedback to vendor pretty shabby with some worrying comments left by buyers. 4 out of the last 11 transactions negative and
one neutral.
