Although the spin at Redgate at Donington might say otherwise.....

...what it actually says is 'more speed than talent'!![:D]

I had a bad experience with the Toyo T1R. I had a pair of rears fitted on 16" wheels and the sidewalls were too soft, resulting in the rear axle never being firmly planted on the road and bouncing laterally at every little input in the steering. Driving was positively dangerous.

Funny you should say that, I used to love the T1-S and had 3 sets on my S2. The 968 I got now has a new pair of T1-R on the back and whilst they grip well they feel squidgy to me in a way I don't recall from the T1-S. If you go quick into a corner you can feel the car lurch suddenly when the tyre loads up and I don't really like this feeling much because they don't compensate for this with good directional stability. I have compensated the front rear balance for now by pumping the rears up harder but I am not keen on putting these on the front because I reckon they will kill the steering.

I think I might try the new Michelin PE2 N0 for our cars on my 968 when the fronts wear out. I have/had Michelin PE2 on my Saab in the 225x45-17 size and they where amazingly good, they had a softish sidewall but tracked through corners like you are on rails. Lightyears ahead of the continental premiumcontact2 that I had before which in turn where miles better then the kuhmo before that.

Neil, it sounds like you are experiencing the same as I did.
I ran old Toyo F1S before switching to the T1S which I both found very good, so went with a pair of T1R believing they would be just as good, but huge mistake ! I ended up selling them a fitted a pair of good old S-02.
We already discussed about it in this thread some months ago.

Does your 968 ride on 16" or 17" ?

Does you 968 ride on 16" or 17" ?

16" on both cars but I have a set of 17" rims in the garage that I bought a while back as track wheels for the S2. I know someone who wants to buy my 16" cups that I have on the S2 so I may move to the 17" rims on that car but will definitely stick with 16" on the 968 as the ride would be to hard otherwise (it has CS springs by the look of it but otherwise all normal 968 suspension).

Your right I remember the thread, you can still get porsche N spec SO-2 in our sizes and some specialist tyre places here sometimes have a special offer on them.

Surprised really by the TI-R because in every other regard it seems better then the T1-S, better grip from cold for example.

Neil, I would really like to know which specialists in the UK still have some S-02 left, as I cannot find S-02 anymore on the continent.

I have two part worn.......................

Step away from the P6000s.

Seriously; I'd pay 520 notes extra for anything other than P6000s if I had to. Without a doubt the worst tyre avalable from a brand name manufacturer and every bit as bad as Korean ditch-finders.

I bought four Toyos from Camskill for £260 (but for 16" wheels) and they seem a good tyre.

Having had Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3s on other cars I'd say I prefer them (but it's hard to make a direct comparison on a different car) so next time I'll try F1s on my S2 or Asymmetrics if F1s are no longer available in 16".

Yes, i have Good year eagle F1's on my 944 S2 and I much prefer these to the Avons it had on before.

This tread pattern!

They seem to be hard wearing (30,000miles) tyres but grip well and when they let go its progressive and controllable. I guess the only way to properly test tyres is to take one 944, and fit all the tyres available for those wheel sizes and drive the car round the track. Otherwise its just our own subjective opinions- of which mine is Goodyear eagle F1's seem to suit the 944 S2.

Why do Top gear etc never do anything like this??? Tyres can make a huge difference to the feel and handling of a car.

John:
Fascinating though this is to all of us, I really think the guys on Top Gear don't buy their own tyres!! Can't think why they would be interested. Can'y think why we should be interested in their opinion!

FWIW my S2 is on Bridgestones (were on the car when I got it), but to be honest I rarely push it that hard. They seemed predictable enough up at Prescott last summer (reminds me I must book in for the 2009 event).

Eventually they'll need replacing, so this is all worthwhile stuff....will it end up in the FAQs section do you think?

Evo magazine do exactly that (test a load of tyres on the same car) once a year. It' still only marginally relevant however as they use the sort of car their core demographic owns (last time I saw it was a current GTI) and that they can get 20+ rims for (no small consideration I imagine). They also still make comments about how surprised they are with tyre x's performance in the test size as it has been much better/worse in their personal experience in a different size on another vehicle.

I would allow my judgement to be modified a little by their test, but I would take it as gospel unless I happened to be shoeing a car the same as the one they used.

Yes i agree with that, Fen. Its all well and good if you drive the same car with the exact same tyre size as the one they test the tyres on in these tests. If not they are just good for a general idea.

I have to say im very impressed with the service from Camskill. I ordered the tyres the early hours of Thursday, they were delivered at 730 this morning to me at work. The communication from them if excellent with very informative emails with parcel tracking etc.

Very impressed and il be using them from now on[8D]

And the Falkens are superb. Even though they need scrubbing in they are 300% better than the solid blocks of rubber that they replaced. I cant even remember the name of them they were that cheap and nasty[X(] The ride quality for one is much better. Lots less rumble and road noise makes it into the cabin. And obviously loads more grip, so much more grip and there not even run in yet[8D]

Totally gone is the sudden snap over steer that came from the last tyres. They made the car pretty horrible to drive to be honest as i simply couldn't get the power down, even in a straight line for christs sake!! Why do some people put such cheap crap tyres on cars like these?? Get a beautiful fast great handling sports car and then totally ruin it all by putting some rock hard cheap polish tyres on!!!!!!!!!

Crazy

Are the Falken available in the late turbo 16" sizes ? 225/50 16" & 245/45 16"
I couldn't find out about it ...

Thanks Paul, looked up their website but they don't have the rear size 245/45.
Don't need a set right now anyway, will probably end up purchasing four ContiSportContact next year ... wishing they won't drop the 245/45 size in the meantime [&:]

What about Michelins? If you have a Costco nearby, I recommend you try them for a decent price, and they often have offers on which mean that you can get 20-25% off if you buy a set of 4.
