Upgrading lights 1990 944

Thanks for the replies. Do we have a list of the fitment names for all the bulbs in a 944 hidden away anywhere in this site?
Headlight H4 fitting great, but all the other bulbs?

Page 79 in the driver's manual gives all the bulb sizes/fittings.......in addition, the interior courtesy and boot lights are 43mm
'festoon' type........I just ordered these today......

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371030994030?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Regards the number plate lights, I recently bought some cheap filament bulbs........

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281344112176?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

however, I found there was a very slight lip between the base and the glass which made it very difficult to fit - in fact I broke 2 before
slightly adjusting the bracket to allow it to fit. I mention this as I was going to fit LED's, but all the ones I could see on eBay
looked like they had more of a flange between base and lens which I think could make fitting difficult.

What LED's have others found that fit the number plates?

What exactly is the adjustable headlight option?

There is a roller switch on the centre console that can be used to adjust the height aim of the headlights to compensate for a full boot of concrete going down the tip, or when you have removed the rear seat and only a quarter tank of fuel on a track day [;)]

I fitted one of these;

http://rennbay.com/944-Headlight-Relay-Harness.html

with new bulbs it made a reasonable improvement - I don't struggle with visibility when night driving other than being blinded by the glare of oncoming HIDs []

Then I think mine don't work.

You may find your roller switch fades the speakers from front to rear, the switch is in the same location as the light adjuster switch. As said above it depends in the year of the car 86-88 speaker fader 88> light level adjuster (as a guide not definitive!)

Chaps,

Can I draw your attention to this thread:

... where many ways of improving the front headlights have been covered. Including the making of a wiring loom harness for around £15 that will considerably help the brightness of the lamps on both dipped and main beam.

(Which is exactly the same as the thing that Pastry just bought for $134 plus postage from the USA, but don't tell him!)

I never said I paid for it. [;)]

BTW If i'd bought the rennbay kit and it looked like £15 worth of bits of wire and relays i'd be pissed off, but its a lot nicer than that. (it was a birthday present).

Thanks; nice amount of info there. This thread is all about LED replacements though :) But yes, the more information the better for all interested in updating their original 'candle' lights

I have LED sidelights already, they are very white when powered up but do have quite a bluish tinge when in the headlight unit itself which I wasn't really expecting.

I have just ordered one of those looms from Rayne Automotive for £40 though, the headlights wending my way through darkest Lincolnshire were abysmal. Once that's in place then I'll look at HIDs or similar.

Edit: I think that's the highest my suspension has ever been courtesy of Cadwell Park's "The Mountain"

Just fitted my courtesy and boot lamp LED's...didn't bother with before and after, but as you can see, they're night and day
compared with the feeble filament type. All pics taken on auto, no flash just before 7.00 p.m this evening.

I've had these LED sidelights for the last 4 years or so and think they're a great improvement

That looks great Wolfie. Real improvement. The front LED's not only bring the car a little up to date but also must be safer than the old - be safe, be seen and all that!

Yup - they look great, much whiter than mine - id be interested in knowing what bulbs they are?

My LED interior bulbs are quite blue too compared to yours - maybe its my eyes! [8D]

These are the interior LED's.......£3.99/pair delivered.........performance enhancing bargain.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371030994030?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

and these are what I ordered for the reverse......

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261599718507?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

was hoping they'd come today, but postie's been and nothing. However, when I checked, I see that they're being delivered by
Herpes, so could be anytime in the next few days. Will post pics soon as fitted.

Can't remember where exactly the front sidelights came from as it was so long ago

Those reverse lights look good but I'd be interested to hear back if you need to add in resistors or not.

Can't see why resistors would be needed, AFAIK you only need them if you're using LED's for indicators to prevent double flashing
speed.

Just a thought, I believe you can now get a different type of flasher relay(solid state)? which overcomes the high speed flashing
problem. I'll start a separate thread to see if anyone's using one.

Reverse bulbs turned up yesterday afternoon............

Not very representative of what they look like in the flesh, but gives an idea. They are slightly blue and match the interior bulbs
but without the flare in the photos. Most importantly, they do appear to have slightly greater range, but not as much as I'd
expected from the brightness of them. I think is due in part to the facetted lenses dispersing the light rather than focussing it.

IMHO still well worth £5.99/pair
