Viewing a 968 Club Sport this week.....

.....So, what are they REALLY like? Hello everyone, I'm Pete' (Ex Skyline), defector from the 944 camp [:D]. Noooooo!! Boo, Hiss
I hear you all cry! Well, let me just say that, after spending a small fortune on my 944 Turbo and then, practically giving it away,
it's safe to say that, as much as I liked the car, I never fell totally in love with it [8|]! I hate being "Porscheless", especially after
my recent trip to Le mans and, staying in the Porsche Club camping area (Lycian Events) [8D][:D]!! Fast forward to today.........
after looking at Five, grossly over priced 964's, I am, on Tuesday, going to view an "immaculate, Black, 968 Club Sport [8D].
"Immaculate" so I'm told by the current owner and, I have no reason to doubt his word. My question to you guys who, are
obviously "in the know" is, are there any common faults or horror area's that I should look out for in particularly? Any comments
or, words of advice before my viewing? I thought about going for a 968 before I bought my '44 Turbo and, keep coming back to
that idea so, I thought I'd have a look at one or two [:)][8D]. By the way, I should say at this point that, the car I am going to
view started life as a 968 Sport and, has been currently upgraded (if that is the right word) to Club Sport spec'. My only
reservation is that it has the "rear seat delete" but my two small children used to love going out in the 944 and, they have made
noises that they want to do so again in daddy's next Porsche [8|]. Is it possible to put the two small seats back in and, are they
readily available if I decide to go down this route? Thank you in advance for your help guys [:)].

Pete' (Ex Skyline).

Hi Pete

I suppose one big thing to look at are the fuel lines as they are showing age now, the other big thing is the cam chain and slippers, it's a different car to an S2 in this department.

if this has been neglected it can cause cam sprocket damage (missing teeth) not a cheap fix these days at £1200 for a pair of cams.

but for everything else pretty much use your 944 experience

not sure where you are located but I'm sure I have offered you a drive in my wrecker

forget about the mods to CS spec, although the car will have a CS chassis number when you get the full details it will say 968 CS with comfort package

the rear seats do come up from time to time and normaly at reasonable money, if you were trying to go more CS and looking for a set of front hardback bucket seats then if you could find them the cost would be about £2.5k

if you wish to have a chat about 968's then drop me a pm and I will respond with my phone number, I have had 75% of my car in bits so I know them quite well now

Martin

Thank you for your comments and, PM Martin. [:)] I have tried to send you a PM back but I am experiencing a few problems with this new forum set-up [:(]!! My mobile number is 07785-527782 if you want to bell me later. I can then tell you all about it. As for now, for the record, I am going to have it, it's a superb car in great condition. Just got to sort the money out now as things are quite tight at the moment but, the vendor is going to store it for me at his other garage until I'm ready! What a lovely chap he is and, what a great experience it was to see his fleet of Super Cars in the flesh [8D]!! He has just gone and bought Colin McRae's Championship winning Subaru WRX [8D][8D][:D] So, I don't suppose he is in much of a hurry for the £17 grand!![:D]

Hi Pete,

Sounds like Martin has been very useful again, he has helped me out a number of times with mine and certainly knows his stuff when taking them to bits. Look forward to seeing your car, sounds like a good buy. I'll drop you a pm with a useful link on Club Sports / Sports. Cheers Rich

Hi Pete

take a look here [link=http://www.968clubsport.com/968_UK_Sport.html]http://www.968clubsport.com/968_UK_Sport.html[/link] this will give you a good idea of what a sport should look like inside

they are very much 911 design in the rear with just carpet for the lower backrest

The Sport was an optioned up CS. You can practically buy 2 Sports for the price of a CS today, which is a nonsense really.

Totally agree, it still amazes me how many dealers don't realise this, they've obviously never looked at the certificate of authenticity of a Sport. Still, it doesn't help when many Sport owners don't mention this fact when selling!

ello Pete read your intentions to possibly purchase a 968 Sport,it's important to clarify a Sport is not a Club Sport and althouigh they are very similar. Interested to know what's different about this car to a standard Sport. I agree the underside is in my opinion the most important area to check out, rusty/ corroded fuel lines brake pipes, damaged jacking points are worth checking out, the engine should be good for 200K providing it has belts replaced . If you really wanted to see a stripped out 968 Sport the Porsche dealer in Tewkesbury has one under restoration. I saw it a couple of days ago and was able to see where the shell corrodes ie around the lower edges of the windscreen, just behind the front wings near the door hinges and the underside as mentioned. £17 k is a good price for a Sport.(they are going up) Mileage is an issue on price and if you buy privately you don't get any guarantee rgds Ken Coad PCGB register secretary i have seen rear seats on ebay for £250/£300.

I'd be a little surprised if a set of cams on the original chain did 200k.

And I'd be surprised if the 3.0 engine was only good for 200K miles if it was looked after!

Cam chain at 100K, plastic guides before they break up and head gasket before it fails.

I think the line between a Sport and a CS can get a bit blurry when the CS has comfort seats, a sunroof etc. I wouldn't be surprised if there's more highly polished Cs's around today than Porsche actually sold...

It's a standing joke on 968uk that many CS's appear to be more like coupes with comfort seats and 20mm lowering springs! I've said many a time that anyone wanting a CS spec car will give his wallet much benefit by buying a decent coupe then changing the bits he/she wants to get it to CS type specification. The argument holds even more weight now that CS prices are going north of £20k - sometimes quite a long way north! A "proper" CS has bucket seats, no sunroof, wind up windows, no radio, no electric windows or boot release, no rear seats, yet you commonly see sunroof, comfort seats, even air conditioning!

I posted something similar about CS's on Pistonheads ages ago and several owners/ex owners spat out their dummies, one in particular cant let it go and still bites :).

It's amusing that Pete wants the rear seats, whereas I've seen a few threads looking for the correct rear seat delete parts - then saying OUCH! at the price! IIRC there are a few rear seat sets on Ebay at the moment, but no "rear seat delete" stuff, so "cost to swop" could be minimal!! The car he's looking at started life as a Sport, so it's probably got the rear seat mounting bits already, may even still have the 3 point seat belts (although I've also seen them on Ebay).

Hello everyone [:)]. Well, I've actually gone and done it. I have bought the beautiful Black, Club Sport/Sport [8|] that I was talking about earlier on in this thread [8D][:D]!! Going to take my deposit over to the vendor next week and then, he is going to keep it locked in one of his garages for me until, my loft conversion is finished in about eight weeks time and I have access to my own garage to keep it in. It really is a lovely car and, I cant wait to take possession of it and, bring it out to a few meetings (although that will probably be next season now but, hey, I'm a very patient chap) [:D]. Thank you to all who have helped me to make up my mind on this decision, I probably wouldn't of taken the plunge without you! Now, did someone tell me that Nine Meister do a mental Super Charger kit for the 968? [8D][:D][:D]!!!

ok, one more question from a 968 novice/idiot (delete as necessary [8|]), how long were the 968's in production? from when, to, when?

I have conflicting opinions of two years and, four years. Could someone please put me straight? [:)]

Many thanks in advance.

Pete' (Ex Skyline).

IIRC 1991-1995, although Sports production dates are rather shorter - maybe 1993-95 as it was a UK only spec. Get yourself over to porsche968uk.co.uk!

Congrats on your purchase, I look forward to seeing some pics of it when you start using it, sounds like a great car. As Chris said, they were introduced to the world in 1991 and ran until 1995 with the Sport model during 1994 and 1995.

Did they also say you cant run much boost unless you fit uprated conrods £££££ ?

don't think they shipped any cars in 1991 mine is a fairly early car and that's 10-92 registration.

so you can say the production run was for 3 years 92-95 with 12,500 cars shipped, and about 50/50 split USA and ROW.

But no CS or Sports to the USA
