Vote against the real Big Brother

ORIGINAL: georgethackray

A bit of news - apparently, Radio 4 covered the petition yesterday, and today many people have contacted Radio 4 to say they couldn't get to the web site to register their disapproval.
It seems that the fault was down to 'too much traffic'!!
Anyway, I've signed it.There are 1.3 million signatures there now.....

So let me see... the daft watts (see 'f**k filter') couldn't even design a system to cope with that tiny amount of web traffic yet they expect to accurately monitor rush hour traffic. [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D] Ha! I have only one testicle now, I have laughed the other one away.

there was an article in the telegraph today about the london con charge - a vast proportion goes on the running costs of the system, still not paid for & none has been spent on improving the roads,
Tony

It's funny how it took months to get to 600,000 signatures which were probably mostly from car enthusiasts on motoring forums. Now it's had a bit of radio and TV publicity it doubles in under a week from the rest of the general population. I wonder if it will get to 3 million by the deadline?

I also wonder what it would be at if Top Gear mentioned it? It's lucky the BBC doesn't get ever politically involved [:D]

And another thing. Why should I have to have two trackers just because I have two cars? I can only drive one , so straight away anyone with two cars gets hit twice for trackers.
Only 2 cars? you lucky bu66er (see f**k filter). I'll have to pay for 3. Then there's the prospect of somebody (probably an ex wheel clamper sniffing a new opportunity) messing about on a 17 year old wiring loom as he plumbs his cursed box of tricks into my lovely all original (except for the speakers) car. He'll probably scratch the paintwork with his grubby overalls. [] Grrrrr.

And that's another thing. What about the poor bu66ers (see f**k filter) who try to keep their cars concourse and in the condition they were in when they left the Porsche dealer. I'm sure that these evil trackers weren't factory fitted! Double Grrrr. [][]

Oooh! And another thing. What about the poor bu66ers (see f**k filter) whose cars break down and have to be towed, OK, I know it won't affect us 944 owners so much ([;)]), but it is adding insult to injury that you might have to pay a mileage charge for being towed home. It would also make it cheaper to break down at night I guess.

And one more thing whats it going to do for road rage? - whats worse than being stuck in a traffic jam? Being charged bloody £1.00 a mile for sitting in a bloody traffic jam - still, cheaper than driving at £70 an hour.

NB the rate of over £1 a mile will be reduced, its part of the ploy come up with a figure of say £1.30 a mile then we can all sigh with relief when its only 10p and praise the wise and great government.
Tony

George (and anyone else wondering about the swearing filter),

There's no need to point out there is a swearing filter on the forum. It's there so that personal firewalls/filters, and company IT depts don't block the site. No need to mention it in every post...[8|]

Thanks[:)]

Hi Mark,
Can full words be added? Wankel as in the rotary engine is blocked, whereas scunthorpe isnt, is there an add to dictionary feature?
Cheers,
Tony

Hi Tony, I've no idea I'm afraid - probably an American dictionary so some words are allowed where some are not [;)].

I'll ask Nic D if he knows how we can make it more sensible.

(Back on topic now [:)])

Hi Mark,
Sorry - it was just a quip I nicked from 924nutter's earlier post to try to make the post a bit more humourous.

Quite right and back on topic...as the government has failed to enforce correct road taxation, insurance, roadworthiness(MOT), on the vast numbers of our european "mates" currently driving on UK roads here in the south east how does this legislation apply to non-UK cars here. I drive on Eire plates, am I exempt?
I nearly said "God help our kids that inherit this sort of twaddle" but with a government this stupid they will outwit them.
Personally I won`t be getting a tracker unless I want to.
Grumpy, middle-aged, middle-class, and British and signed the petition.
Well-mentioned John.
And another thing...That really would make a good title for a book[:D]

I didn't like to brag, but now you mention it; there is the little matter of the 924 lux unloved in the garage, and the other 924 turbo in the drive at the property I have jointly bought with my mother. Don't forget I said don't mention the Citroen AX gt too. I make that 5

Time for my soapbox to be dusted off again......[&:]

Am I the only person in the country to be wondering just how much thought the majority of the billions of signatories have actually thought about this? You guys are all excepted.....

Firstly. I believe strongly that unless you both voted against the Labour Party in the last election - and I don't mean didn't vote - and you have read the proposal through and, most importantly, GIVEN AN ALTERNATIVE, you're name should not count.

Look away if you are already getting nervous. And - remember that I'm not an elected official.......so you can't vote me out.[:D]

I am a petrolhead. I also don't want to spend my retirement, 20 years or so away, saying we got it wrong. I'm NOT happy with the current situation on the roads, both from a congestion - an therefore safety - point of view, and the selfish desire that the oil doesn't run out before I'm unable to enjoy the freedom of personal transport and not see the younger generation go to an ever-increasing war over oil. People are dying so we can fill our cars each time. Think about it....

Whilst I would rather eat my own head than stick up for the current Government, I actually applaud their courage in putting forward an idea for discussion. That idea is obviously highly flawed, but the basic priciple surely has some merit?

As I see it, there is no way we can go on increasing the volume - and yes, the world's population IS increasing and we have the luxury of living in a society that they will increasingly want to move to. Fact.

If volume is the problem, then there has to be an incentive to not use the car. If the lack of recources is a problem, then car use has to be cut. Fact.

Global warming, not proven but also suggests we cut fossile fuel usage.

So. If you're still with me.....[:)]

We're all agreed that the number of car journeys in this country has to be reduced for many reasons. Not least of which is that I'd like to drive more. And faster. So, how do we cut the journeys?

We could rely on personal responsibility. Look at the school run and forget that.

We could do nothing, and assume that people will flock to public transport because the roads are a nightmare. It won't work. Fact.

So, we're all agreed that we have to DO SOMETHING?? Yep. Then the only question is, what?

Personally I would put a whacking tax on aviation fuel. Yes, you guys fly and you really shouldn't. Second, I'd not put a road pricing plan into action, but would raise fuel duty massively. This would push up the price of goods and services, but do you really need those green beans from Kenya, via Aberdeen, to your home in Devon? Rural communities would have to be catered for, as would the essential users of fuel such as hospitals, fire services. Central heating owners could be advised that, if you put a jumper on, we can still drive our Porsches.....

It's all really quite simple. If we don't like the way things are at the moment, then doing nothing will probably only make it far, far worse.......

So. I, for one, am not signing the petition because I really do want to be able to enjoy the roads in the future, and I am prepared to accept that it will cost me more. The alternative is, to me, far worse.

Lastly, the Big brother thing worries me. I'd actually prefer that the guy who commits a crime against me has his DNA on file. As such, I'm quite happy for the cameras to track me. If you drive the roads around me, they've been doing it for years and it hasn't hurt me.....

Maybe it's time I left the room.....[&:]

I have now started a no.10 petition for the replacement of Paul McNulty as he has obviously gone faulty.

How much global warming is down the the selfish use of compost heaps ?

Paul, put away the hover and strimmer and go back to the sickle so we can enjoy our #72 injectors in peace.

Yours
Disgruntled of Highgate

[:D] [:D]

PS I should be allowed to drive on the roads and Tony (sidestream) shouldn't - because he uses aeroplanes and I don't !!

Climate change - IPCC tells its its down to burning fossil fuel - IPCC is a team of multi governemnt funded researchers - most climate scientists do not believe in man made global warning.

Fossil fuel - we know where the next 20 or so years oil is coming from - we have known for many years where the next 20 or so years fuel is coming from - do Oil companies really need to spend money looking for where the next 50 years oil is coming from or would they possibly consider this is a waste of their profits.

Congestion - better engineering would help and whats wrong with a few more roads - greenies will cry "we cant tarmac over the whole country" well so far less than 0.06% of the country is road, I think we could probably find a bit more.

Current take from vehicle tax 50 billion per year current spend around 6billion.

Any new system will have massive set up costs and probably wont work properly - look at the NHS computer system.

The system wont work properly so the innocent, will be punished - someone got thier car crushed a few weeks back for having no insurance. Unfortunately it was a computer error and his cxar was fully insured when the police crushed it.

Police relying on DNA - supposing a crim takes fingernail clippings from your rubbish bin then leaves them embedded in a murder victim, who will they arrest after checking the computer?

Tony

Paul asks do something - do what? ok here's a plan. revoke everybody's driving licences over the course of the next couple of years. replacements to be issued subject to passing a meaningful test including motorways valid for maximum 5 years down to annually for people who scrape a pass. those who believe that driving is to be regarded as a basic human right become disappointed and learn that the right is in fact a privilege that comes with responsibilities. Driving without a licence could have penalties increased as a gentle reminder. Government raises extra revenue from test fees which self finance examiners' wages, economy boosted by BSM profits and if you know what you're doing it should only cost you £50 every 5 years to have the roads freed from morons.
In fact, the concept could be extended further with super licences to be granted to people who can lap a track and/or exhibit high levels of awareness and responsibility on the roads so that thay can do 100mph on the motorways legally in their Porsches without having to look out for cameras on bridges and sneaky unmarked Police cars [:D][:D][:D]
Obviously anyone caught middle lane hogging on test or not daring to venture above 28mph on my favourite local deristricted B road would then simply be disqualified from driving for life, be castrated, have their children shot etc etc
