What spark plugs do you guys use/recommend for a 944 turbo modified?

hi guys ,

im unsure as to what plugs I should be using on my modified 944 turbo?

I use to run an iridium bosch plug but can’t find them for the numbers to order some more.

I put the standard bosch wr6dc at the minute but would like the uprated ones for obvious reasons.

Also and importantly where’s a safe place to buy them from?
thanks all

Daniel ??

One grade colder than standard. Don't buy plugs from anyone that's not an official dealer, apparently there's a lot of inferior Chinese copies floating around. I use a VW part number that's exactly the same as Porsche specify, except it's cheaper.

Hi blade ,

do you get yours from VW then?

and do you remember what number you use?

Thanks
Daniel ??

I looked up the part no. for 944 turbo plugs, and it turned out a VW Golf turbo I think it was, used the same plugs.

Thanks guys,
mum still unsure which to use as I was once told by Jon Mitchell that I really need to run iridium plugs so that it illuminates the risk of the tip melting off ( which has since scared the crap out of me ) is this true???

And if so what number plug plug should it be to make it iridium ? Anyone know....

I run Bosch WR6DC plugs on a 320-350bhp build. IIRC PSH had an issue with iridium plugs

I use either Bosch WR7DC or NGK BPR6ES (standard turbo) with about 300-310BHP and never had any issues. Going colder wouldn't be a bad idea and may do that next time. Note that for Bosch they go down for colder (so WR6DC) and NGK go up (so BPR7ES). With your build I'd go 1 colder than stock.

Wouldn't bother with iridium or anything else. The standard Bosch and NGK are well proven on these cars.

Thanks all!

hi Stuart ,

so so am I right in saying I should go for
bosch WR5DC
NGK BPR8ES

for one colder ?

I havnt got long before the tune and need to buy a new set as I think my fresh set I’m running is toast as when it was really rich before I adjusted a few things and got my afr kit installed , the plugs were black.

cheers
Daniel ??

Was running NGK BPR7ES in mine (when it was c340BHP), they are not fancy (in terms of exotic materials etc.) but they are cheap and reliable, also ran comparable (copper) one stage colder beru. Go too cold you might get fouling but a second set of the NGKs wont break the bank! As they are cheap changing them often (12k miles) means less risk of mechanical failure of the plug.

There is a rennlist thread here, https://rennlist.com/forums/944-turbo-and-turbo-s-forum/246883-best-spark-plugs.html but its a typical rennlist thread! :)

My son said you popped into his place today for plugs, but they did not have what you wanted

the NGK have a smaller hex than the Bosch ones

Hi Martin,

funny as as I was gonna message you.

Yes im struggling to find anywhere at the moment who I trust and that have the ones I need.

Yes those that your son had there Bosch ones weren’t the right thickness for some strange reason ? It looked like it was for a chainsaw it was so small, compared to my old ones with same number which are the larger type, it was very odd ? We both said we needed you there!

im thinking of trying the NGK BPR7ES bit they didn’t have any iether.

I think NGK are based in hemel hempstead which isn’t far , so I’m gonna try and get in touch with them if I can tommorow.
Unless you know of any other good sources which you trust not to be fakes.

even tried Halfords today

Amazon should be able to supply you genuine plugs of whichever type you decide on. My personal choice is NGK and for me, that means Iridium but each to their own. I wouldn't use Bosch and wouldn't touch Denso if they were the last plugs on the planet. NGK BPR7ES are very cheap on Amazon, worth a punt. Opie Oils also sell spark plugs if you are unsure of Amazon...

Cheers guys,

yes im wanting to use NGK too this time as I have always run Bosch

and yes a little desperate but not overly as I was at work and driving past Halfords and thought let me see if they do them and how much but they didn’t of corse , they did for my sit down lawn mower though! (Typical)

What make was the plug that melted on your last engine?

It didn't melt, a lump of ceramic broke off causing damage to piston, head and bore on number 2...I forgot make but son says it was Denso....this was when Iridium plugs were new, there was a number of cases of this failure recorded. When my son took his Modified RS turbo for a tune of the dyno after he built the engine they wouldn't run the car with Iridium plugs because of these failures...His RS still made 325bhp though...:)
