What spark plugs do you guys use/recommend for a 944 turbo modified?

What make was the plug that melted on your last engine?



It didn't melt, a lump of ceramic broke off causing damage to piston, head and bore on number 2...I forgot make but son says it was Denso....this was when Iridium plugs were new, there was a number of cases of this failure recorded. When my son took his Modified RS turbo for a tune of the dyno after he built the engine they wouldn't run the car with Iridium plugs because of these failures...His RS still made 325bhp though...:)
325bhp is nearly TWICE what Turbo Technics quoted for their uprate on my series 1 RST over 30 years ago. It had their bigger turbo, a gas flowed head, an uprated clutch, 2 stage boost and was chipped. Perhaps Turbo Technics figures were conservative....
 
haha.. I wondered if you might 'bite' at that one?.....'Hook line and sinker' I'd say....it's not a CVH block, it's a Zetec 2.1 with CVH head along with a few mods to both done by yours truly in my workshop, it's a beast of an RS with big turbo, massive intercooler, and many other features, I have to say it does look the part...:)

A wobbly cab wont be much good in the bends. Is it just a straight line car...like yours :ROFLMAO:.
 
You know it’s funny becuase I’ve recently started really liking the look of a Sierra cosworth and actually wish I had one too.

Ive never really been into any fords as I’ve have a porsche since 17 so didn’t really notice them as much if you like, but I’m really starting to appreciate the old fords Now.

I have always loved a mk1 escort rally styley with extra flared arches though! ??

if if I could choose another car of my choice , it would have to be a lancia integrally latest generation top spec in red or yellow ???? My cousins had two in scicily one which he races in the mountings and another which is mint with under 6000 miles on in advocado green and it still has the plastic on door cards from factory. It must be worth a fortune. He also has quite a few other really nice old supercars in a underground garage, his quite well off obviously and owns the only large supermarket in the village which was passed down to him aswell as a few other things like a old cinema ect.
His a very nice bloke and not showy at all but just lives the dream we all would like to with loads of nice toys so it’s quite a joy to go over and visit.

Paul, you are very bad sir...:) Dan my boys are very much into fast Fords, my second boy having owned a number of Cossie's . his current project which is very close to being finished is the 'king' of them all, ie the Escort Cosworth. The engine is now back in the car (thank god as I needed the space in my workshop) and the bodywork has just had it's final polish after a full respray a few months back which again was done by my eldest son's company. watching his top body man scrapping the lacquer off with a Stanley blade to get a dead flat surface is nerve-racking, to say the least, but boy was it worth it, not a blemish in the paint after numerous sandings all the way up to 6000 grit, it's ceramic coated too. No full pictures yet but i do have this teaser which my boy's posted on the RS performance FB page.

there's still a lot more work to do before it's ready, brake pipes were being made last time I was there and the new 6 pot water cooled callipers that I made the adapter brackets for were fitted, they only just fit inside the rims, not those in the picture I might add, they are just to give it a rolling chassis. BTW my son is opening up a new workshop in Perivale once the papers have been sorted as he is expanding, I asked does this mean you may do more work on Porsches, the answer was yes as he'll have a ramp more suitable for low cars. it's been a real hassle getting my car on the old ramp, takes about 20 mins...lol

I have had the pleasure to go in a fast blast in a mint escort cosworth when I was around 18 years old . I remember it was one of the first times I actually shit myself when the boost kicked in along a Normal street , as I didn’t think we were going to manage to stop. That was a very quick car. I also used to love my ex’s dads scorpion cosworth that was a real peach and luxury leather inside also ???? Wonder how much there worth now
 
Now imagine the same car with massive brakes, turbo that looks big enough to have come off a bus, better suspension and power around 500bhp.....the kick from the turbo will scare the life out of most drivers but that's fast Fords for you, mass of lag and then 'bang'....you are left hanging on for dear life...:)
 
I remember when the Escos was first announced, and I thought I'd have to sell my 3 dr Cosworth, my Honda Fireblade and scrape the rest of the money together and buy one. Then in the first roads test the car couldn't crack 140 mph, and it turned out the gearbox was made of chocolate when they were tuned. So instead I kept my Cosworth for 13 years, and remain in no doubt that the Daddy Cosworth is the Sierra RS 500.
 
3 door batwing cossie is immense! I had a mk4 rs turbo escort with a wide body kit, 16 inch split rims, 2.1 zvh running 360bhp with a 6 injector set up. It tore apart inner wings and torque steered all over the place. To be fair I never dyno'd it but it featured in Max Power magazine by the former Chinese keeper. The poor chap got a terminal illness and I acquired the car via a friend. Calibra turbo pistons if I remember correctly. Monster spec with adjustable in cabin boost. Shoulda kept it!

I do laugh when my boy goes on about the RS500, many of the parts on his car are RS500, his lastest bit being the phelum (spelling) chamber with it's 8 injectors if fitted. He only picked this part up over the weekend. I do enjoy reminding him that it was slower than the 951 when launched, only managing 6.3 to 60 compared with the 951's 5.9. But they are strong engines, capable of massive power gains if you can live with the lag and mechanical break downs..
 
Plenum chamber [;)]. Ask your son if he's heard of a guy called Nick Waples, he was/is probably the top cylinder head fettler in the country. He did the Mountune heads when the Cosworth won the BTCC title outright. He also did the head, inlet manifold/plenum/ throttle elbow on my 87 Cosworth for me. And before that the heads on my 79 3.0S Capri. The RS 500 was built to homologate an uprated block/turbo/8 injector inlet/intercooler/spoilers etc so they could be fitted to the touring cars. Those parts were never optimised on the road cars, so they didn't perform anywhere near their full potential. If they had the car would have slaughtered an 87 944 turbo.
 
One of our best days out with fun was when I bought my son,Nick ,a days Rally Experience at Phil Price's Rally School in mid Wales,
It started with the early morning drive down from Formby in the Guards red 964 C2 we had at the time with the day being spent in Mk2 Escorts
on the rally track.
Highlights however were the rather fast passenger drives with Phil himself around a pucka rally stage used by many rally stars for training in a Ford Escort RS Turbo-remarkably all fuelled by LPG.Got a great video of it somewhere,I took.[:)]

Amazon should be able to supply you genuine plugs of whichever type you decide on. My personal choice is NGK and for me, that means Iridium but each to their own. I wouldn't use Bosch and wouldn't touch Denso if they were the last plugs on the planet. NGK BPR7ES are very cheap on Amazon, worth a punt. Opie Oils also sell spark plugs if you are unsure of Amazon...

A thread with modified 944t, Sierra and Escort Cossie banter plus with some colder spark plugs talk is music to my ears, thank you and keep it going on all fronts [:D]


 
[:D] Well, I replaced the original 15"x 7" wheels with 205 tyres on my 87 Cos, with 16"x 8" wheels with 225 tyres from an Escos, they looked the mutts nuts but dulled the handling. Much more than changing from 16's to 18's on a 944 turbo, so there. [;)] And I changed the original 13" special alloys on my 2.8 injection turbo Capri, for the 15" alloys from a 280 Brooklands Capri, and it handled better.
 
I use NGK in mine one step colder, I have had loads of fast fords, MK1& 2 RS cars, escort turbos etc, had a lovely sapphire Cosworth in crystal blue, always remember a 993 on the M6 who floored it when I came up behind in the outside lane, pushed him down the M6 until he realised it the 993 was not as quick as a tuned / mapped Cosworth [:D]
Fantastic fairly simple engines.
 
Yes I’m very impressed with some of the power that can be had from some of these old fords....not sure about there reliability though as I’ve ne personally owned one, but there power capability’s is nothing to be sniffed at.

Ive just always leaned towards the German cars mostly loving pure sports cars and supercars. Had quite a few BMW’s mostly 5series and golf mk2’s as my everyday run arounds. Always had a 944 soon as I passed my test as my first car and still have that to this day it’s a alpine white 1986 944 lux which has been sitting in a garage I rent for the last possibly 15 years or more. Had my fair share of vauxhal gSI ‘s up untill I was with my wife after 3 years of us dating she stopped me owning 3 cars at once which I used to tax, insure and mot. It was great back then I didn’t have all the bills I have now and used to always run 3 cars at any 1 time. My BM’s and golfs were my run arounds and my 944 was my late night and weekend toy! Good old days!!! ??
