What's lurking in your garage.....

spare set of mag rims in silk mat black. Had them fully powder coated in a vacuum chamber last year by a specialist.

Did he die as a result of no air? [:D]

What is the benefit of vacuum? Talking point on here is the quality of our refurbed mags.

no no ... the guy is still alive, at least he seemed when i picked up the rims after the job.

From what i've read and being told, magnesium reacts to oxygen quite happily. After cleaning the rims from the old colour it is - from what i have been told - important to not wait too long until the fresh powerd coating is applied. otherwise, if the rims are exposed to oxygen too much, the rims start to "gaz out" after the fresh colour is being applied. this results in bubbles developing underneath the fresh colour. This looks quite ugly.

The workshop i had involved with restoring my mag rims has access to a vacuum chamber. The coating / colouring is done in an environment without oxygen. This is supposed to do the trick.

needless to say i had to pay a bit of a premium for the job. Did it work? I have the rims sitting in my garage for 7 month now. Not the slightest sight of any bubbles underneath the colouring.

Alternatively it would also have been possible to just apply a new layer of fresh colour over the first. I decided against that option because I wanted to have the wording "magnesium" and "made by siti" show quite nicely.

Now u have the full story :)

Have just got back from hols and see that magically you have made pictures appear where previously there were only incomprehensible hieroglyphics.

Wot I done wrong? PM me if it is too embarrassing or shameful to put on a public forum!

Cheers

Thanks Klaus, that's useful information.

Magnesium certainly reacts with air forming an oxide layer which does not seal the metal beneath ...

I had my mags refurbished by Diamond Styling last April (following Melv's recommendation) - they are still perfect , no bubbling or blemishes :), admitedly they have not been used since,.....Their service was very efficient too, they turned my wheels around in about 2 or 3 working days, cost was ~£100 per rim

I had two sets done last year, neither of which are now very pretty ....

I will try Ian Jemison in York --- local and experienced with Mag wheels. We all know it can be nightmare, but speaking with Ian I know he'll do his best.

I'll let you know how it's gone --- in two years time !

Ta!

I do actually have some brush strips on the bottom of the doors which work fine until I open the doors. But then it is hard getting the cars in and out with the doors shut.

Cheers
