Wheels

Most of the adverts i see for cup style alloys state for latter 944' s is there some reason why they wont go on an early 944?

They will still fit, but you will need to purchase spacers to push the wheel out the correct amount. Unfortnately the cost of thick spacers will be over £100 a pair, which will raise the whole cost involved []

I recall reading (and having been confirmed by Bert) that earlier 944s had a larger casting for the front wheel bearing housing. Consequently, the hole in the middle of later wheels is too small, hence the need for spacers to clear this casting.

Ok i have decided not to go for cup alloys as my car is an early one and i thing it may look silly sitting on 17 Inch Wheels. What I want are 2nd hand S2 (Forged) or the Deep Dish Turbo Teledials. I think both are 7inch wide front and 9 inch wide rear so im guessing i still need to get spacers.

Marcus,

Suggest you have a think about it. I' ve got an ' 83 (can' t get much earlier than that!) with 17" Turbo wheels on. In my opinion they really add to the look of the car - to the point now that teledials with the higher profile tyres look like Land Rover wheels to me! People that see the car just can' t believe that it' s nearly 20 years old.

Thouroughly recommend them. Don' t know if mine are OE (but I doubt it) as they were on the car when I bought it - does anyone know how to tell? Even with the tyres on they seem reasonably light.

Wheels do make a big difference.

Here a few examples

Yeh but the later 944' s have a more smooth front end which suits the cup wheels, i love the black cookie cutters i have on my car but u cant get them bigger than 15 inch.

Yeh but the later 944' s have a more smooth front end which suits the cup wheels,

Mark Roberts (ex Assistant 944 Register Secretary) had a Lux with the early front end and his looked amazing with Cup wheels

I like the look of the deep dish teledials as well, If I had kept my Lux I was considering those if I could find a set at the right price.

My personal take is that the original Cups (Cup 1' s) as on Mark' s car suit the earlier cars best. Cup 2' s look OK on the S2 / Turbo fronted cars, but I think they only beat the Cup 1' s if they are 18' s. I' m not a fan of the Boxtser or Technology / Turbo wheels with the anlged spokes on any 944.

If you want wheels to fit without spacers then the early 944 Turbo teledials will go straight on as they came from cars with the pre-ABS offset. Fuchs will also fit and IMHO they look fantastic, if not exactly modern.

When I bought my 944S2 Cab, the previous owner offered me the original wheels on the cup alloys that were on. I looked at pictures of my car with the original alloys on and the cup alloys won hands down!!! Have a look and make your own mind up.

I like the forward facing spokes, looks like the car is going fast even when it is standing still.

Each to their own of course.

I like the Fuchs too but I don' t know how big they go. In my opinion 17" with 255 40 on the back and 205 50 on the front is just the right ratio of wheel to tyre to arch on the 944.

I agree but of course, they are forward and backward facing depending on which side of the car you are looking at.

They should have the width and offset on either side of the air valve, example 7J (air valve) 58. The wheels you have are boxter wheels should be 17's. Look for a part number if you ever take the wheel off. They look good!
