which 944 ?

ORIGINAL: 944s2

Nick

My S2 could just about pull away from standtill in 3rd,tickover to redline in 3rd no problem

But as several folk have said its horses for courses, in the S2 I loved the "drivability" Was in a turbo admittedly only once for a test drive and the this aint very quick... oh my goodness acceleration was different

The lag issue can easily be fixed at a cost as numerous folk will attest

Bottom line is, depending on budget drive each model then decide which one is right for you

Hear hear - my turbo will pull from 10mph to redline in third, just not very quickly until the boost turns up...[8|][:D]

Having never driven an S2, I was only surmising that the S2 must need some decent revs up before it really hits the power band, although obviously it will pull much better from low revs than an off-boost turbo.

All great cars with character

I'll get my coat......[8|][:D]

ha ha we sound like the 911 guys and their Air is Better than water debate. let alone i paid 100k for mine how much did you pay for yours ha ha , I also have a Ginger step child he's 11 . can anyone tell me how do you get shot of em.

My advice is get the best 944 you can afford... Test every model you can get your hands on and see which one "feels right" Look plenty at them and get a feel for which one suits you best.. Good decision to buy a 944 [;)]

Lux = Wife S2 = Girlfriend Turbo = Fustrated Mistress if thats any good of an explanation [:D]

my next awkward question is if or why would a turbo cost more to run than an na and could it be used if im really enjoyed as a daily run about(apart from the petrol)?

That is another myth - that turbos are more expensive to run. They are if you take into account that alot of the turbo owners have started down the modifying path, which is expensive, but if you were to just buy a good one and run it it would be as expensive to run as a 52 plate 1.8 Focus. Mine is a daily driver and it handles it fine. I get about 25mpg for normal driving and on a long run will break 30mpg (just), so it isn't even that thirsty. As far as the mechanicals they are pretty simple as they are all 2.5ltr 8v lumps. Nothing fancy, no extra moving parts. And the turbos are good for at least 150k miles.

Oh Peanut, I'm not convinced that the S2 will pull hard from 1000rpm as you suggest - I know its a 3 litre lump, but those 16 valves would suggest to me that you'd also need some revs on the dial before it really starts to motor?

Still think Turbos are better though......!!![;)]

EDIT
this is a silly argument .Any 944 is simply brilliant and we all love them to bits . I'd love to have a turbo but I'd settle for a standard Lux any day . I had one as an everyday driver for 10 years [:)]
I can't afford to have a turbo as well as an S2 [&o]boohoo

Short answer again. Yes.....[8|]

A really good turbo will cost at least double to buy. That means, however you're financing it, it will cost more to run. That said, a good turbo will cost less in the long term than a bad Lux. That's the whole issue with these cars - when an annual service can cost 30% of the car's value you can see how they could become neglected. Of course, we can appreciate that the cost of a service is still less than the monthly depreciation on a diesel Focus, but we have a shiny red Porsche on the drive.

There is an argument about whether an S2 or a turbo is better, but the Lux is a different car completely. Seriously, get a few passenger drives in the different models and really decide on your budget, and the decision will make itself.

why is the s seen as a bit of a "ginger step child"

I had an S. Not unlike a turbo in its power delivery. Actually 188 bhp at ? rpm but has a red line at 6800. Not as good as a 163 8 valver much under 3800 but then very fast acceleration over that. Watch the cam chain. The exhaust cam is driven by the belt and under the cam cover the exhaust cam drives the inlet via a chain and sprockets which are cast into the cam. Great if the chain is changed regularly. I was shown a receipt for ÂŁ155 to replace the chain and tensioner before I bought mine, and that was at 55,000 miles, so I was not unduly concerned about it failing. Somewhere on the 944 forum there is a picture of me in it, heeled well over taking the final bend of the lap at Castle Coombe.

Yep, as an ex-S owner I agree with that. What often isn't mentioned is that the S retains the lightweight feel of a Lux and is quite chuckable and therefore fun.

Personally whatever you want long term I would probably start off with an early dash lux (pre oct 84) it has the most character because the dash is proper 80's, is huge fun to drive (I personally think better that the S models because the power is so instant like the 8v vs 16v mk2 golf comparison) and best of all its really cheap so wont cost you much to discover whether the 944 is the car for you (it will be).

..then when you get power envy and long for longer gears get a modified turbo which will tear a hole in your wallet but also tears holes in time.

Regards,

Ben

Fuel consumption on my 944S2 typical mixed driving 26mph

Get a cabriolet, IMO it is the most beautiful car Porsche ever made - the shape is timeless and will still look gorgeous in 20 years time.

A beautiful Girlfriend with a gorgeous body (easy to live with and low maintenance) or a beautiful Frustrated Mistress with a gorgeous body. The choice is yours. For me the choice is easy, it will be the low maintenance beautiful Girlfriend with a gorgeous body. With the S2 cab, you can openly show her to your friends and family and be proud of yourself.

So following the analogy to its conclusion.....

...a modified Turbo is the frustrated mistress who also invites her gorgeous mate along for the ride?![:D]

near lakeside in essex

Essex region has several very friendly 944 owners, and John Sims. [:D][:D]

Or try the Ace Cafe Porsche night, last Wednesday in the month from 7.00. It's not too far from you, and apart from February there are always loads of front-engined cars.

I'm sure Oli, the patron Saint of the S2 [:D], will be along in a bit to pour scorn on us poor Turbo types....[8|][:D][:D]
Ahhhh! I have finally been noticed! I have never been called a Patron Saint of anything before - thanks!

(And you said it on my birthday as well! What a lovely present!)

Oli.
