Just to add my 2 pence worth, as an owner of a very nice example of an 'S' (which I bought from a previous PCGB member), I am very happy with the performance delivery and handling of this my first Porsche.
I would have no worries in recommending an 'S' providing it has a good maintanance history and has been well looked after.
Performance is good and fuel economy is surprisingly good especially on a run out.

Just my thoughts anyway, good luck with your search.

(And you said it on my birthday as well! What a lovely present!)

happy birthday Oli .

Hope you take the old girl out for a celebration ....

. suppose you'll have to take the trouble n strife as well lol !....

I didn't actually drive it on my birthday - we were on holiday in North Wales, and the car was left parked for the whole of the day ...

However, in order to get to North Wales, I did drive it all the way there ( [:)] ) and back ( [:)][:)][:)] ) which was a pretty good birthday celebration in itself!

my last question. Is it possible to get more power out of an s, or is it what you see is what you get ?

Not really. Rick has done masses to his, but had no joy upping the power IIRC.

The S2 is pretty limited to a de-cat, which won't help the S as it hasn't got a cat, and a chip. Certainly the well-known chips improve the S2s, see Rick's dyno charts for before and afters, but I don't know if anyone had dyno'd a chip in an S?

General notion is that if you are into modifying, buy a Turbo. If you are into keeping things standard, an S2 is the better route.

Given that the S is essentially a smaller-capacity S2, without some of the trick bits, and less-known, I am guessing that the tuning potential of an S is less than that of an S2. Come to mention it, I don't think I have ever seen a chip for an S advertised ...
