Why's everyone selling their 993's?

Anyone else notice all the 993's for sale in the last PP? Usually you get more "Wanted low miles C2/4S" than actual cars for sale. Is this a knock on effect of the 997? If it brings them into the reach of more enthusiants then good I suppose (bad if you just paid 43K for one).

In reply to Maurice:
It certainly wasn't my intent to create and inflammatory post (as hopefully my second post made clear). Perhaps the title was a little, er, 'provocative' but was certainly tongue-in-cheek. I really only expected a couple of replies and not a 993vs996vs997 war! At least it brought about the most in-depth 993-996 comparison with Stuart's post; candidate for a sticky perhaps?

Merry Christmas everyone.
BTW Anyone with a nice low mileage C2/4S 993' temporarily devalued by this post can pm me for an offer that reflects recent market forces [;)]

New cars will always appeal to some people.I wish I could afford to buy new every few years, and to hell with the cost.
Cars that are treasured by their owners often fall into the < I wish they were true classics mould>.then the ammount of pampering and servicing no matter what cost can be mentally and fiscaly rewarded by the fact that this < classic> will appreciate.

Sorry, but only RSs and motorsport derivatives have this trueism the reality is that they are old cars and relatively mass produced items and will depreciate as all old vehicles do.
If you don't believe me try this test: You HAVE to sell your 993. Your spouse needs an urgent operation that can only be funded privately and you have to let the Porsche go. Find out what the trade will pay tomorrow for your pride and joy CASH when needed , not after waiting months for your dream buyer in P, Post.
You are not alone
I've spent over the last 15 yr almost the same ammount of money my old 3.2 cost new , maintaining and < improving> it, it's not logical, it's like a slowly progressing addiction, yes, I can control the ammount I spend on this car , yes I could stop any time I want to, I could put the car in the classifieds tomorrow,-------- but you never do------ and you never add up all the invoices,-------- when you do you divide by the number of years you have owned the car-- 30K over 12 yr isn't much is it???????

Daddy why can't we have a bigger house like our friends?

I can totally relate to your feelings!!
The GT3 is a fabulous car in every way and beats the 993 hands down in most departments ie. peformance, handling and braking.
However there is something very special about the 993, which more than makes up for its shortfalls and in my opinion, makes it far more desirable.
Long term I can see the GT3 being replaced in my garage with the next generation, however, I could never part with the 993 its too "Special".
The grin factor at real world speeds is irreplacable.
Ill now wait for everyone to point out that I am living in the past[:D][:D][:D]

Hi

Just joined the club, having bought my first Porsche a 1995 993 C4 Cabriolet 3 months ago.

Have wanted a porsche since I was a kid and finally now can afford one [;)] The reason I choose
the 993 was because I thought it was the best looking one ever, including the new 997! All
those curves so sexy....

My previous car was a subaru impreza turbo ( please dont throw stones at me!) which i bought
new and had for 7 yrs.

In comparison the 993 is one hell of a lot harder to drive, Im sure i can get from a to b faster in my old
car, but it is so much more rewarding arriving in the 993 as you need to concentrate and you fell you have driven the thing.....the subaru tended to flatter your skills a driver.....the 993 hehe [8D] i guess you all now needs to be treated with respect particularly in the wet....

Also after long journeys have to say im exhausted.....combination of the offset pedals.....the kickback on the steering...is that normal? and
the hard suspension.....however i do find the ride improves dramatically if you speed up!

My advise if you are thinking of buying one go for it, you wont be disappointed.....i get such a kick every morning seeing it
out on the drive.....

ps can anyone recommend any good insurance companies for cars based in london without a garage! would £1350 be a resonable quote
considering i have 9yrs NCB thanks....

Well done congratulations and yes watch out for the wet although you have a "4" so not as twitchy as a "2" and the pre 993 - 911's were worse !

Well you didn't mention your age but to me that insurance quote non garaged London parking does not sound too bad.

Ok, a bit OT but... this quote sounds about right: I received a similar quote via Adrian Flux for a non-garaged 993, although I have fewer years NCB than yourself. If you haven't tried Adrian Flux, I do recommend them as they have been the cheapest for me on my other car as well. Good luck -

Cheers -

I am 33!

Bought the car from portiacraft in north london.

Looking a resonable place to service it as well, any recommendations?

It really is an experience owning one though.....putting oil in every month makes
it seems so mechanical :)

As long as no-one gets personal, there's no harm in expressing different opinions.
It's not much of a debate/discussion if everyone just agrees.

although it will be next month by the time I finish reading all of Stuart's posts [] good read though !!!

btw.. Happy New Year 2005 all 993 owners !

Stuart

your long post was a very good read, when I finally managed to read all of it..

cheers !

btw.. some advance warning would be nice of your next epic post....

I went to JZ Machtech to service my 3.2 and they did an excellent job and have a very nice workshop. I don't think they are the cheapest independent, but sometimes you do get what you pay for.

Rgds,

Kevin

I havent seen a decent 993 turbo below £40k - good news in my book. I paid £48K for my 95 993tt two years ago and its probably worth around £41K still.

FWIW, someone just sold a pristine Ocean blue 13k mile '98 993TT to a dealer for £45k... the car has been sold for £61k... []

Why o why o why...

I haven't found the name for who styled the 993.

Tony Hatter styled the 993.

I found that Harm Lagaay was at Porsche when the 993 was done, employed in a styling role.
Whether he actually takes credit for the 993, I'm not sure.

He took the credit for 996, 997, 986, 987, C-GT, and the Cayenne.

Rgds, Stuart.
