718 Cayman GT4 is here – at long last.!

I'm currently sat in PEC Silverstone having driven their 718 GT4 all morning on a cold but bright and sunny day.

It's a cracking car for sure, a touch more refined in the handling stakes than the 981, but that's not a negative comment. It just feels a touch less raw, but just as accomplished.

The winner for me is the engine. It feels much more comfortable revving out to the red line, and just sweeter overall when compared to the old 3.8, which felt strangled to me. The new 4.0 is much better in that regard.

My car should have been completed this week, so roll on collection day next month!

Good to know Dave. Hope you enjoyed your PEC lunch too.!

Someone on another post was asking if he could track the build and delivery process other than via the supplying dealer, but I said I didn't think it was possible. True?

Jeff

Jeff, The sales person can see all the build and transport stages. Some seem unwilling to share or perhaps customers don’t push lazy sales staff.

Thanks Ralph. Yes, I think the poster was aware that probably he could get the info from the sales chappy but hoped that another route was available to avoid having to make regular calls. He reckoned that other manufacturers (BMW/Mini in his experience) have this facility.

Hey Twin,

I believe we will be picking our cars up on the same say from Silvestone.

See you there, I will be the short fat bloke with a huge grin.[:)]

Glad the weather was kind to you and the car lived up to expectations. I am a couple of weeks behind you with my build and waiting for my invite to PEC. Happy days 😁

After you collect it, you’ll be offered a Masterclass session with a brand expert at your PC. If he is like mine, he may know some of the answers to your questions.

I am also booked with CAT driver training at Millbrook in May so hoping the car is run in by then.

Glad you had a good day it seems your thoughts are very similar to mine, see my earlier post.

Despite what some say I think it will be a better road car, a little bit more noise and lower gearing would make it perfect.

Cheers Geoff [:D]

I'm ambivalent on the noise. Much as I like a great exhaust note, you can't really hear it in the cabin while driving and attitudes towards loud road cars has certainly changed over the last few years for the negative. The 718 GT4 is a nice blend of old mechanical noises and modern low-level emissions and dBs, so as you say it's a great road car for today IMHO. The gearing has never bothered me as I like to enjoy revving an engine out, but I can see how having it shorter would improve acceleration.

All in all, I think it's a great car and I'm really looking forward to picking mine up!

Couldn't agree more with you Dave re cabin noise. Generally I'd say that you notice the exhaust less in a coupe than in a rag-top, but on the other hand intake and mechanical sounds become more prominent.

Sounds as though overall the drive was a positive experience. I presume that it was exclusively at the PEC and didn't include any local routes, but not long now until you get to enjoy the whole driving experience.

Jeff

Yep, it was PEC only for me Jeff. I drove their yellow Clubsport spec car which appeared to be a pre-production example and not road registered. I also spotted a Gentian Blue comfort-spec car parked up later in the day which had UK plates, so I assume that could be taken out onto the public roads if required. I was only interested in trying out the car closest in spec to mine, plus I wanted to spend a lot of time on the low traction areas to really get a feel for the car's handling.

The new car is definitely different to the old 981. It's less raw and feels more polished and coherent, with a smoother and less strangled engine. Handling is a touch more compliant and a bit less knife-edge feeling as you get towards the limit of grip. Pretty much what you'd expect of a .2 upgrade from Porsche.

Come on then Dave ... show us what you've got..! I'm sure you must have picked it up by now?

Jeff

Just picked my red GT4 up yesterday. you wont be disappointed it is absolutely stunning and great on the road. Just have to be patient running it in. Any advice on running in ?

Congrats Peter,

Good to hear that you're happy with the new toy. Although it's a rather conservative approach given modern materials and manufacturing practices, I'd be inclined to stick to Porsche's recommended running-in procedure which you'll find in the Driver's Manual. I'm sure that your patience will be rewarded longer-term.

Jeff
