Here's an interesting option for those choosing the full bucket seat option next year:

https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-germancars/porsche-develops-3d-printed-seats-for-718-and-911/42046

They're expensive enough as they are at the moment, so I wonder what the premium's going to be for these?

Jeff

It's going to make buying a used car interesting if the first owner ticked this option. I assume the inserts can be changed but replacements will have to factor in to the trade-in and/or purchase cost.

[puts on protective flame suit]

A bit like PCCBs, they seem to be trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist in a road car

[runs and hides]

That's right Dave, but I suppose every manufacturer is looking for something different to offer (and fleece!) the punters ... PCCB's and switchable shouty exhausts being typical examples.!

I'm with you and Peter on the exhaust issue. I think they've run their course, especially with EVs beginning to make their mark on the motorist's psyche. Also they're less important in a coupé where intake and mechanical noise tend to dominate, unless you want to drive around with the windows open.

Jeff

They're one for the GTxRS owners to brag about at Cars and Coffee, along with:

[ul][*]PPF[*]ceramic coatings[*]PCCBs[*]PTS colours[*]magnesium wheels[*]CXX options[*]low mileage[*]car value[*]rarity of model[*]Nordschleife lap times performed by Kevin Estre[*]etc[/ul] :p :ROFLMAO:

It seems that Porsche are now following suit from premium and other car suppliers and closing down production; a fortnight suspension at the moment.

Inevitably that's going to impact delivery dates for those those who've either locked their spec or are hoping to secure a build-slot.

First world problem.....I’m on the 3 month waiting list for a toilet roll and a loaf of bread....!

I totally agree. I used to get scowled at my loud exhaust on the 991 GTS and was getting more conscious of it recently.
I have to say, on reflection, I think you are all correct. for the first time Ive been able to enjoy Bedford Autodrome without fear. Granted I was under 4K all day but there was much louder cars out there and I was very happy that the noise police wouldn’t be on my case, I even left the sports exhaust open. Can’t wait to go back when I can stretch the legs fully, which I couldn’t do on the 981 GT4

Here's a PH piece comparing the 718 GT4 with a 992 Carrera:

https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-features/porsche-718-cayman-gt4-vs-911-carrera/42167

I was rather amused by the comment that:

The 911 shape is so rounded and clean it's as though the car has spent a century tumbling back and forth on a pebble beach, the tide rushing in and out again in an endless loop, knocking off sharp edges and wearing the bodywork down to a smooth finish. On the other hand, with its towering rear wing and jutting front splitter the GT4 seems to have left a circuit at high speed, crashed straight through a tyre wall, landed on the public road and simply carried on.

I can't help but think that a 718 GTS 4.0 would have been a better choice for the comparison. Maybe that's coming?

Jeff

While the individual comments on each car can be interesting, I always find those types of comparisons utterly pointless. Who is cross shopping a 4-seat comfort spec Grand Tourer with a turbo engine and PDK, against a naturally aspirated track-leaning mid-engined two seater with a manual gearbox?

No-one, that's who. It's a waste of copy.

Rant over.

Funnily enough I am, as I may have one track day year left in me and am looking at 992 cabriolets for some wind on my scalp motoring next year. They could have compared a Cayman GTS with a Macan which would have been useful for Brian.

It may well be, as most journalist's copy is, a waste of copy, but not for the reasons you surmise.

That's different Ralph - you're not looking to buy either right now.

I have big issues with comfort spec GTx cars and Grand Tourers with bucket seats, so take my comments with a pinch of salt! I'm a bit of black/white purist on these matters :ROFLMAO:

I reckon that the journos are having a rough time coming up with copy, given that presumably they're not able to drive any cars ATM.

Maybe the PH piece was just a combination of recollections from driving the two cars at different times before the lock-down?

Jeff

It was like comparing apples and pears as said earlier; one is a track focused street car the other is a now overly bloated grand tourer. Perhaps the reviewer got confused by the GT badge on the former.

No, there's a video (a few months old) to go with it...

So there was Dave, and if it was a few months old it rather smacks of PH scrabbling around to find an article. I agree that it was a rather odd comparison, other than to point out that Prosser was making the point that the prices of his "perfect cars" were very similar.

I still reckon that a 718 GTS 4.0 would have made a better choice for comparison, and would have highlighted its significantly better value for money compared with a base 992 Carerra, maybe a point that PH would rather not make in order to keep them onside with Porsche.

Jeff

Talking about the GTS 4, did anyone on here commit to an order or even land one before the lock down?

Nick

First deliveries were due May/June, but that's obviously not happening now. Press cars in June/July now maybe?

Nick,

I could be mistaken but I've a feeling that someone on the Boxster forum made mention of an order. Fat chance of one landing here until Q3 I would imagine with the factory closed from 20th March "for an initial period of two weeks" according to the Porsche Newsroom. It'll be interesting to see if they're able to adhere to that.

Jeff

PDK is clearly coming for the GTS 4.0, and I suspect the red Spyder in the clips is also PDK but it's hard to tell.

The GT4RS will be PDK only in my opinion, very expensive and quite exclusive as it's probably the run-out special for ICE engines in Caysters.
