The weather's been pretty awful but I got around 75 miles in yesterday, including a stop for a pub lunch of course! The car is fabulous, but sticking to 4k revs for 1800 miles is going to be hard going - the engine just wants to go...

I am also a strict running-in proponent. It pays high dividends later, although I agree it's a test of self-control meantime.

I'm not sure about keeping it below 4k up to 3000km ... I would have thought that by 3000Km the engine should have been ready for some serious work to complete the running in process ... of coarse on a progressive basis ... easing it up another 500rpm every 500 Km ??
Maybe its when it shuts down to three cylinders ?

I think you'll find that 4,000rpm/3,000km is the standard Porsche-recommended running-in procedure, for the sports cars at least. Whether or not owners choose to follow that recommendation is down to the individual, but since over-revs are recorded along with drive-time I think that I'd be very wary about driving the car extra hard for the first 3,000km. At least it would avoid potential arguments about warranty infringements at a later date.
Remember also that it's not just the engine and transmission which need to bed-in, it's all the other components including steering, suspension, brakes and tyres.

As someone whose car has collected 40000 miles of stone chips in 5.5 years I'd say that was a healthy attitude... I still don't provide seating space for cats though. There is no "issue" with the sound for me. In these modern times I'd rather my car sounded great in the cabin while driving (which it does) and doesn't p*ss off everyone around me with a shouty exhaust like a badly modified hot hatch. It's now much more socially unacceptable to have a loud sounding car today, which is a shame, but it is what it is.
I loved my 981 GTS and the exhaust noise it made but the times they are a changin'...

It's going to make buying a used car interesting if the first owner ticked this option. I assume the inserts can be changed but replacements will have to factor in to the trade-in and/or purchase cost.
