718 Cayman GT4 is here – at long last.!

I just happened to be browsing the Configurator - and feel free to correct me - but there seem to have been a few updates which I don't recall being on there before ... Python Green? Standard Interior in Black with elements in Race-Tex? Interior Race-Tex options? Tyre sealing compound and electric air compressor a cost option (no real loss but that's as stingy as making you pay for the smoker's option)? Only the Full Bucket Seats available now on the Spyder? Have the prices been increased slightly for MY2021?

Rather surprising but there's still no sign of a PDK option yet.

Jeff

You've been reading PH I see Jeff [;)]

The configurator is a bit glitchy at the moment, I suspect there are more updates to come.

Ha! Believe it or not I've not been there for a few days Dave, but just checked and I see what you mean. Gosh, someone was up very early to bag that!

Interesting to see that PDK is on the US options list ... maybe there'll be an update here later. There's bound to be very high demand so perhaps Porsche have chosen to make it available first in its most important market before making it more readily available? We'll have to wait and see.

Jeff

I thought it was odd that PDK wasn't there. Like I say though, the configurator appears to be having updates in the background so it may appear on the UK version later.

.... and Paint To Sample is available too (+$12K). I suspect these changes reflect 2021 changes. The US market is paranoid about model year in the same way as some UK owners are about the registration date. Post September deliveries are MY2021 and you can't just repeat the 2020 options in USA.

No PTS in the UK as yet...

and if it is will come in around £6K, obviously to discourage and/or to reflect that Porsche want more of a cut of the flipper market.

$12k for PTS..! What's wrong with yellow or red at +$0..?

BTW, I hope you chaps are making the most of the excellent weather to get some miles on your nice new yellow cars. Hope you've invested in plenty of bug remover. [;)]

It's a ridiculous amount for paint, Crayon/Miami/Python are £2273 and that's bad enough for a simple flat paint colour!

I did a 200mile round trip in mine last Sunday and I'm heading out at lunchtime today for an hour or so, and probably tomorrow too. Dirt and bugs are all part of the fun!

I had heard about the hike in PTS pricing strategy from my dealer principal. Came in after the poor customer sentiment of the PTS secondhand market and it's actually easier for Porsche to make and sell cars with fewer choices in colour. It's all about them, obviously.

Yellow should be the only colour [;)]

Yes Nick, I've no idea if the paint shop does a batch of one colour before changing to another, but it must be a logistical challenge to programme-in a [batch of one?] PTS colour; hence the high option price to discourage it?

Jeff

As I understand it, PTS cars are not painted at the factory but rather outsourced to a separate bodyshop. At the factory, they must paint a run of shells in the same colour at the same time, which is why there is a huge bodyshell storage facility at Stuttgart while they wait for the allotted build schedule.

That would make sense Dave; though I seem to recall Ralph mentioning that Osnabrück has its own body assembly and paint shop, so I don't know where they fit in.

Jeff

Possibly a similar thing? I can't see an easy way for a factory production bodyshop to do individual PTS colours.

Agreed Dave.

I find it odd that more metallic and special colour options are available for the GTS 4.0 twins. More "lifestyle" than the GT4, but I would have thought the Spyder could have warranted more choice.

Jeff

Well I've just broken through 1200 miles in my GT4, and to celebrate I picked up a massive self-tapping screw in my nearside rear during today's lunchtime drive. Bugger! Luckily my local tyre place is fantastic, and 30mins/£15 later they've repaired it (it was around 30% in from the outside edge of the tyre so perfectly placed for a safe repair) and my wheel rims are unscathed [:D]

I'll be dropping into my local OPC for that tyre to be refilled with nitrogen when I get chance, and while I'm there I'll get the underbody plastics checked. A couple of speed bumps and angled approaches/exits from petrol stations have caused a bit of light grazing, which appear to have taken place under the front lip and on the brake ducts just in front of the front wheels. I don't think anything major has happened to them, but while I'm at the OPC I'll get them to hoist it up on the ramps for 5 minutes to be sure.

Next week the car goes in for a geo adjustment to check everything is lined up OK. I know from my previous GTS that the factory setup tolerance is quite wide, and that adding some more camber benefited the handling, so I'll see how similar tweaks work on the GT4. At the very least I'll know the camber and toe are spot on and the car is perfect for my current use (road only).

Finally, I've got a local detailing guy coming over in a few weeks to work on Mrs Twinfan's Focus RS and my GT4. Nothing major, just a thoroughly good clean, paint check and minor paint correction if needed, full wax etc. I'm then all set for the summer barring the oil and filter change I'll have done at 1800 miles once the car is run-in.

Fingers crossed spectators are allowed at the BTCC and British GT rounds so I can have a few runs out to watch some racing this year!

Trials and tribulations of GT4 ownership Dave! With minimal ground clearance I'm sure some form of splitter/ducting damage is inevitable with the sort of street furniture that's around these days if you're driving in built-up areas. If it's just plastic, the damage is easily rectified ... at a [Porsche] price! The suspension's fully adjustable so you could have a look at increasing the ride height slightly when the car's in for it's geo adjustment.

Pity about the tyre but at least it was repairable and much cheaper than a replacement.

Onwards and upwards to completing the running-in phase. A bit old-school perhaps but I'm with you for changing the oil and filter after the running-in period. Production methods are very good these days - as are oils and filtration - but you can never guarantee that all machining swarf has been removed, although the filter will remove any elements flushed out and floating around in the oil before any damage is done. A fresh oil and filter in place before using all the performance can't be a bad idea.

Jeff

Yep, that's what I'm thinking re. the oil. I didn't bother on my GTS, although I did ask and my OPC said it's not worth doing, but on this car as it's a brand new engine derivative I think I'll get it done for peace of mind.

The tyre should really be replaced, and I would if I was taking it on track, but given my road-only use plus the fact it's only 1200m old and the location where the screw was I'm happy to have a repair for now. I suspect it'll need replacing due to wear long before my 3yr 111-point extended warranty check requires it to be changed.

I'm fine with the scraping by the way, it's all part of the GT car on the road charm, I just thought while they had the car they can check I've only grazed what I think I've grazed!

I'm sure the general advice will be not to bother changing the oil and filter Dave since the car's already been started-up and driven well before you've got your hands on it, so you could argue that any damage has been done already. On the other hand, if the oil and filter aren't changed until 2-years/20,000 miles you could argue that it's a long time for any swarf to be hanging around in the filter, although you can be sure that's something Porsche will have looked at.

Just out of interest, do you plan to run the with Cup 2 (?) tyres all year or are you going to invest in some more weather friendly tyres?
