718 Cayman GT4 is here – at long last.!

Hope you manage to source something cheaper Andrew. Circa £5k is a lot to fork out, although I assume that you’d get your 10% Club discount on that price?

Ref winter wheels, I’ve got a set of GT4 Porsche dealer wheels I might sell. All correct offsets etc. Unused and have original also unused 2015 N0 Michelin Alpins (yes I know that tyre age is too old for some people!) It’s a long story - but basically I bought them then managed to pick up a set of OE GT4 wheels about a week later. Can’t get the photo to upload or you could see them. Located in Northants if anyone wants to see them. If interested please DM me and I’ll WhatsApp images. Chris

 
Some very fancy pipework there Andrew! Obviously significantly lighter than the standard silencer arrangement.

Interesting to note that in the PH video Dan Prosser didn’t notice much difference between the 981 and 718 inside the car.

Aye Jeff, cobbled from another on-line video review ... the largest weight saving being `in the pocket` !

Not surprised at Dan`s comment, the cabin / engine noise is a good insulator plus ... the control of the exhaust valves appears to have a mind of it`s own :ROFLMAO:

 
I thought the PH review was odd in places.

I drove the 981 GT4 and 718 GT4 on the lanes around Silverstone and suspension compliance was one big difference yet apparently not. I found the 981 uncomfortable and was upset over bumps and gullies and I can see why owners fit the DSC suspension controller to improve compliance. Of course some prefer the 981 OEM ride but equally some don't, it was a difference.

On sound, at lower speeds the 718 is quieter inside, probably the same at high revs. I have not heard a 718 passing at high revs so have no basis for comment on how lovely the sound is. My old one made a lot of noise.

The 718 engine has better spread of torque and doesn't need intake mods to free up the top end.

The 718 controls require less effort, some may yearn for heavy clutch and gear movement but I for one who remembers them back in the day am happy with easier control weights.

I agree Ralph, and said something similar on PH. The engine is very different in my experience, and very noticeable. As is the extra suspension compliance which is a thing of wonder.

It made me think Dan had a similar approach to my wife when evaluating cars. If the controls are stiffer and the suspension is firmer and less controlled then the car is "sportier".

Both cars are great and wil have their own fans, but I'm really surprised how few people don't find the 981 GT4 engine lacking. It's the #1 thing that stopped me buying one.

My padded [8|] :p butt dyno is perfectly fine with how the 981 handles the extremely diverse conditions up here, amazed even [:)] ... looking forward to how the change to PS4S`s affects it

Some good points there, and I have to agree with Dave’s comment re his wife’s analysis of sportiness.

I’ve not driven either car so can’t comment on Prosser’s evaluation, but although the lighter clutch has been a common topic of conversation I was surprised that he felt that the 718 steering was less feelsome, especially since the 718-series steering generally is considered a significant upgrade on the 981. Maybe the difference was due to tyres or geometry set-up, and the weather didn’t look great for a full evaluation? Prosser mentioned that the seating position in the 718 was more upright despite both cars having the 918 bucket seats which I suppose could have had an effect.

I’m sure that the latest engine is the primary stand-out difference between the two cars.

The steering comment is odd. I find my car goes where I think I want it to go - it's effortless, direct and enough feel to know what's going on. There's maybe a touch more assistance compared to the 981 GT4, so again it might be a case of stiffer = sportier in Dan's eyes.

The 718 GT4 is probably a bit more effortless to drive quickly, and some people maybe want a bit more "fight" to enjoy the drive. It's a bit like that in the guitar world where some people like the foibles of a vintage instrument, others prefer the more slick feel of a brand new model. I play modern PRS guitars, so you can tell which side of the fence I sit on. It's the same with cars for me, in fact with everything!

 
I’m sure you’re right Dave. With the Gen2 GT4 Porsche have had plenty of time to develop and refine the original car and obviously have chosen to knock off the rough edges to make the car more user-friendly whilst maintaining its endearing characteristics; appreciated by some and not others.

My exhaust should be all sorted tomorrow morning - the jig has been updated and the rear pipework plus bullet silencers is currently being tweaked to fit. I'll be picking it up on Friday as long as all goes to plan.

Can't bloody wait! [:D]

 
Good to hear Dave. Having had the car to work on, fingers crossed there shouldn’t be any problems this time round.

I've just picked my car up, so I've only had a quick blast in it, but initial impressions from me are that it's pretty darn good! It's louder, naturally, but the frequency/tone of the exhaust is less bassy. It has more poke to it. It also sounds less muffled, as you'd expect with less silencing. Once you get the revs up and the valves open (I have the factory valve operation in place, no bypass system fitted) the car certainly screams much more. As my wife described it "more race car" [:D]

Oh, and along with the exhaust this fell into the car at Ninemester too - the first one in the world we think. With it fitted, along with the exhaust, it's transformed the car into something totally ridiculous. It's such fun to drive! :ROFLMAO:

As I said before, that’s a superb job they’ve done on the exhaust, and very pleased to hear that the result’s to your liking.

Solid (lightweight?) flywheel replacing the DMF? That’s interesting. Is it a 981 carry-over or has it been developed exclusively for the new engine, and who makes it? Apart from improved engine response I’d be interested to hear what effect - if any - it’s had on low speed drivability and gear rattle.
