718 Cayman GT4 is here – at long last.!

Looking forward to your PS4S feedback Dave, especially how they `feel` given the more flexible sidewall

Michelin`s site now includes the rears

Have been watching a few `Ring videos recently, the Apex GT2RS MR taxi runs / swears by them in the wet
new here, also have a Gt4 and in Aberdeenshire.Fitted front PS4S last week and still waiting on the rears,Proper tail happy with the race max on the rear.Semi slicks are good but don’t get the best of them here.Should have full set of tyres on midweek and looking forward to it.

If I may ask a question please.

Regarding the PS4S topic, are the GT4 sizes N-rated or are they the generic PS4S?

The reason I'm asking, is that in my experience with the 20" Michelin PS4S N0, compared to the generic variety seen on other Caymans at track days, there is a distinctly different sidewall profile between the two types. For example, the 20" N rated PS4S has a more substantial sidewall profile than the 19" PS4S generic tyre. It would be interesting to compare the 20" PS4S in both GT4 tyre sections with the narrower 718 CGTS 2.5t N-rated sections.

For my tuppence worth, PS4S tyres are the spot-on choice for winter and wet weather use on the GT4, for both 981 and 982 models. The wet road grip is astonishing especially on track days, and from my past experience the PS4S tyres are also surprisingly good on slush and snow covered roads.

If I had owned a GT4, having the choice of both Cup 2's and PS4S are absolutely the ideal choice. The best of both worlds, and wet track days may no longer be feared with the PS4S rubber.

They're Porsche rated, N0-spec Brian. The rears are newly released, I think from only a month or two ago.

Sorry for hacking onto the thread, came up on a tyre search the other week as was searching on PS4S for Gt4.Couldn’t find N0 rated rear Michelin’s for sale and was about to buy a set of Dunlop Race Maxx2 when I spotted the N0 rated 4s rears on the site as I was about to buy Dunlop’s,took the Michelin instead as could get matching set Porsche stamped.Ran semi slicks for years on Evos and my M2,mostly R888 and cup2.looking forward to a break from them, hard work for day to day.Cant wait to get a drive with new tyres fitted, look good, front have a nice big kerb protector, looks meaty and fills it out marginally.

The best thing about PS4Ss is you just get in the car and drive, unlike Cup2s where you're constantly wary of any cold weather or damp conditions so you're hyper alert.

I'm looking forward to having the option of switching across to them for the summer next year once I source some extra wheels, but from now until spring I'll be able to use the car far more than I would have on Cup2s [:D]

Although I get that although they share the same chassis set-up the GT4 supposedly is more track-oriented than the Spyder, but with the approach of winter and cars still being delivered it does seem odd that the Spyder has the option of ‘summer tyres’ whereas the GT4 doesn’t.

I’m sure that like you Dave there are a lot of GT4 owners who don’t intend to track their cars and would welcome the option of a more general purpose tyre for year-round use.

Jeff

And now they have it Jeff, albeit not as a factory option.

Oh, and my car may well make it to a track next year...

I've been running Michelin PS4Ss on my 981 GT4 since July, albeit non N rated as they were not available at the time I bought them and when I called Michelin they said they were not making them in the correct size for the rear, 295x30x20, an obviously very ill informed customer service representative! Anyway I am running generic XL loading PS4S's and they have been superb. A spirited drive to the Peak District confirmed this and a good few drives in the wet that inspired an awful lot of confidence in the tyres unlike where you have to be on your guard with Cup 2s.

Thankfully my Cup 2s with 5mm of thread on them are sitting in the garage as when needed. Interestingly, I did speak with my OPC who said they are coming round to the fact that a lot of people do not want to run Cup 2s as a road tyre and are switching to PS4Ss. My warranty isn't due for renewal until March 2022 but they said as long as I can prove I have N rated tyres, my Cup 2s, there shouldn't be any problems come warranty renewal time. They also said that the Cup 2s may not need to be mounted on the rims. No doubt I will find out nearer the time.

It sounds as though you’ve got an unusually enlightened Centre there Andrew. Certainly it makes a change from the usual attitude to compliance to the letter with the Extended Warranty T&Cs, especially when this could be considered a safety issue and that fitting MPS4S tyres hopefully will encourage owners to use their cars during the winter months.

Jeff

Jeff, absolutely, I do have access to another car but I would sooner use the GT4 now and again. We all know Cup 2s can be driven in all conditions but you have to be on your guard. Having run Cup 2s and PS4Ss on my previous car, I know what tyres need to be used at this time of year and over the next few months.

As to the OPC, I was surprised too that they were so understanding but at least I have the Cup 2s if they need to be put back on the car if they insist.

Hi Aohara,

I'm looking at swapping to PS4Ss but wondered if other than grip levels in certain conditions if you felt, indeed feel, an appreciable difference in ride quality, immediacy of turn in etc? For instance I’ve read that they are perhaps a little more complaint than the Cup 2s and therefore dial out some of the harshness derived from driving our lovely cherished British roads?

Hi Tim,

I actually found the PS4Ss to be very compliant and the ride quality was very good. I did also feel that the car turned in better when I was in the Peak District and I had hardly any understeer at all. Basically the car went where I wanted it to go. I did suffer understeer when using the Cup 2s but that may have been that they were not up to temperature correctly where as the PS4Ss work straight away. I will caveat that I have non N rated PS4Ss as at the time of me buying them Michelin weren't making the rears. Michelin now make the rears in N rating. If you're thinking about changing to PS4Ss I would 100% recommend them for road driving and buy the N rated versions as I would have done if they were available.

Cheers,

Andy.

Dave,

Excellent news that Michelin and Porsche now have N0-spec PS4S tyres for the GT4. They are absolutely the right tyre for both wet and wintery conditions.

To prove my point here is photo taken of my 718 CGTS shod with PS4S N0 tyres in May 2019 on the A939 at the Lecht Ski Centre, Aberdeenshire.

You're a brave man taking the Porsche out in these conditions, irrespective of the tyres. Bet the Macan is a safer bet?

We've been out in our Focus RS in similar conditions on PS4S - they really do cope with lousy weather admirably!

On the wheels front, I've just sourced some satin black centre caps and black valved TPMS sensors and I'm debating whether to pull the trigger on a set of new 718 GT4 wheels from my OPC using my PCGB 10% discount. I'm not sure a used set is going to come up and save that much more, especially if they need refurbing...

I forgot to say, for anyone after a spare set of TPMS sensors don't go to your OPC. I was quoted £850(!) for supply and coding to my car. Doing some reading around, I belive the parts are supplied by Huf which is now BH Sens. They supply sensors and valves that certainly appear to be the same as the original Porsche parts and they come in both silver and black to match your wheels:

Silver: http://www.products.intellisens.com/Details/SensorDetails/RDE047V21

Black: http://www.products.intellisens.com/Details/SensorDetails/RDE047V26

They do not need coding as they're already set up for the 718 series according to their product catalogue:

https://www.intellisens.com/fileadmin/fetch.php?pdf=/fileadmin/pdf/Produktkatalog_2019_PDF.pdf

I struggled to find a reasonably priced supplier here in the UK, or even an EU based one, but these two websites are from the same German company and they list the TPMS sensors above:

https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/

I used Autodoc yesterday and have a set of 4 black sensors on order which cost £145. I guess we'll see if they turn up and then hope they work, although I won't be fitting the Cup2s again until next year!

Fabulous - good to hear!

I've just ordered a set of wheel from my OPC so I should be all good to go [:D]
