718 Cayman GT4 is here – at long last.!

Interestingly the GT4 uses the old vacuum system whereas other models now use stepper motors which have variable stages versus the vacuum's Open or Shut

That sounds like a much more controllable method than the rather basic vacuum-operated system Ralph, especially when environmental noise is becoming more of an issue. Tried and tested older generation car tech maybe?

A quick exhaust update - it doesn't fit! 10mm too tall on the silenced pipework section, so a slight rework to that part only and all should be good. 9m are hoping to try again in a couple of weeks, but at least they got the 'before' videos done and I got my oil change done.

The joys of prototyping! :ROFLMAO:

They had my car for a week in August, the manufacturer has made an error and/or assumed slightly higher pipes would fit.

That's disappointing Dave, but as you say, all part of the prototyping process. Hopefully they'll get it right second time around.

Keep us posted on progress.

A quick tyre update - I've decided to go for a set of PS4Ss on my GT4. The weather's getting colder and wetter and I'd actually like to use my car without crashing it :ROFLMAO:

Black Circles have a 15% sale on today so I've grabbed a pair of N0 spec fronts at just over £160 each. The hunt is now on for a reasonably priced set of N0 rears. Around £273 each is the best I've found so far, which including delivery would make it around £875 for the set of four tyres. With fitting on top it'll be nicely under £1000 which is what I was aiming for......

Well done! Do report back on them, i am very interested as have Pirelli Pzero on my “winter” set and with a Silverstone track day on 19th might need to have a better wet track option. Snowy

GT4 rears are 295/30 R20s Jeff, pretty chunky! I've been keeping an eye on Camskill, and emailed them a few weeks ago, but they're not available from them at the moment. I'm waiting to hear back from my email to Black Circles to see if they can source them at a good price, otherwise I've found two other suppliers around £275 a tyre. I'll wait until early next week to see if either of them can beat that price.

Snowy - we've been running PS4Ss on my wife's mk3 Focus RS for around 3 years now and they're a fantastic tyre. You won't go wrong with them on a wet track day!

Once I've got them fitted to my GT4 I suspect I'll be advocating their use over Cup2s unless your car is a track hack.

Tyreleader are showing at £278 so might be worth following them as well. I have bought from them before and they were fine.

i haven't seen N0 295/30/20 listed anywhere - did they make an approved PS4S in that size?

They do now, yes. It's fairly new out and not yet listed on Michelin's site. My guess is that it's been approved as the "Summer tyre" factory option for new 718 Spyder to sit alongside the Pirelli P-Zero. So for the GT4/Spyder you now have N-rated:

Sports tyres - Michelin Cup 2s and Dunlop Sport Maxx Race 2s [standard factory fit for both the GT4 and Spyder]

Summer tyres - Pirelli P-Zeros and Michelin PS4Ss [optional factory fit for the Spyder only]

They're too expensive from here, but just to show that they exist:

Dave,

I presume the stumbling block is your requirement for an N-rated tyre which presumably is in short supply? Odd that the fronts appear to be readily available though.

Good call I think to be prepared for the temperatures heading down in the coming month so you’ll get the benefit of listening to that new exhaust when finally it arrives! [;)]

Jeff

Yep, it's N-spec tyres that are harder to come buy. There's the odd K1 Ferrari spec, lots of M0 Mercedes spec and of course the 'regular' tyre too. My theory is that Porsche are getting first dibs on supply at the factory for any Spyder that's had summer tyres specced. Supply is increasing though, more places are definitely stocking the tyre now, so it'll definitely get better as time goes on.

Given my non-track use of the car, PS4Ss and the new exhaust will just finish it off nicely for me alongside the improved chassis geometry I've already had done. I don't think there's anything else I'd change about the car, I don't even mind the gearing! :ROFLMAO:

Far too much online grumbling about the high gearing from the race driver wannabes Dave. Many posters seem to think [hope?] that the PDK ‘box will transform the situation, but I can’t see that being the case myself. The car’s still going to be high geared - even in 2nd gear! - to meet emission requirements.

Jeff

I agree Jeff, PDK is going to be pretty similarly geared as it is on most other models.

The feel of the manual gearbox is great, it's worth choosing it for that alone!
