718 Cayman GT4 is here – at long last.!

Dave,

Thanks for all the PS4S info … I`m torn between them and the full Michelin PA4 Winter`s, have even looked up the six month weather forecast [8|] :ROFLMAO:https://www.metcheck.com/WEATHER/180days.aspMonthOf=10&zipcode=AB23&locationID=58116&lat=57.2&lon=-2.1

Do have the option to p/ex my CR rims - Cup2 set for a genuine 981 GT4 Winter set, involving an 800 mile round trip …

Researched the 982 GT4 Winter set with Porsche but informed that as they were not tested on the 981 they are not approved ...

Having run PS4Ss on our Focus RS for 3 years, I wouldn't bother with full on winter tyres unless you regularly get snow and ice. I see you're up in Scotland, so it may be different for you, but PS4Ss do remarkably well in low temperatures. We just take extra special care on snow/ice/slush as most other people do for the few days a year when the weather's that bad.

I'm just waiting on Black Circles to get back to me with a price on N0 PS4Ss, if they can get a pair of rears, otherwise I'll order them from elsewhere online later. My front pair have turned up, so I'm planning on getting them fitted in a couple of weeks when we have a free Saturday mornng for Mrs Twinfan to be my support vehicle :ROFLMAO:

Thanks for the Ps4S info guys! I am doing Silverstone on 19th and, after aquaplaning several times on the M40 last night, think they might be perfect for a wet track day and safer autumn winter driving!

Well Black Circles didn't get back to me so I've ordered PS4S rears from TyreLeader. FIngers crossed they'll be here later this week and I'll get them fitted first thing on Saturday morning [:D]

I'm looking forward to being able to go out for a drive without being paranoid about how much rainfall I'll run into!

Sounds like a sensible move Dave. Nothing worse for your driving enjoyment than not to have confidence in the tyres when you’re pressing-on in adverse conditions.

It’ll be interesting to hear how the two tyre sets compare in the wet. I would expect a significant difference.

Jeff

I can tell you now, after driving on them for three years already all year round, the difference will be night and day. In the dry of mid-summer I suspect the Cup2s will have a touch more grip and feel "stickier", but we're talking about maybe a dozen(?) days per year here in the UK when I would be out in the car and get the benefit of them. For the rest of the year PS4Ss will have the advantage, plus if going away for a few days and the weather turns it would be a big problem with Cup2s. They're really not good with standing water.

Cup2s aren't really suitable for regular UK use IMHO, unlike PS4Ss which are superb.

As expected, I note that Miami Blue has now disappeared from the option list on the configurator. It’ll be interesting to see what turns up as its replacement ... another darker shade of blue is rumoured.

Jeff

I’d agree that a track comparison would be of interest Andrew, but given that even most GT4s are more likely to spend more time on road than track a road test comparison is I think more revealing.

Jeff

Well I'm still waiting for my PS4Ss, they were slow to leave the warehouse and then ended up in the wrong part of the country! Ah well, I should have them in a day or two and I'm hoping to get them fitted at the weekend.

In other news, exhaust fitment attempt #2 is scheduled for Friday afternoon.

So exhaust fitment #2 has also failed - after the re-routing of the upper pipework the silencers are now fouling the chassis instead of the pipework :ROFLMAO: The new plan is to send my car to the fabricator for a few days so the next re-work can be final. That'll be happening in a couple of weeks.

Fingers crossed my tyre swap to PS4Ss goes without a hitch tomorrow morning!

Sounds like a plan Dave, and at least it can be made to fit your car. Sometimes CAD has its place, although I’m sure there’s always going to be variability between cars.

Hope you have more luck with the tyres tomorrow.

Jeff

Cheers Jeff! It seems the fabricator doesn't quite realise how tight the fitment of the original exhaust is, so at least they can see for themselves once the car is with them. It's the best option for sure, and Ninemeister just want it done now so they can seel some systems!

I'm sure the tyres will be fine. I've bought the correct ones and the guys I'm using know what they're doing to avoid wheel damage so all should be well. I hope...

Looking forward to your PS4S feedback Dave, especially how they `feel` given the more flexible sidewall

Michelin`s site now includes the rears

Have been watching a few `Ring videos recently, the Apex GT2RS MR taxi runs / swears by them in the wet

Yep, they're superb tyres in both the wet and dry. I doubt the more flexible sidewall will make much difference on the road, and anyone who's driving that hard to notice the difference is probably driving irresponsibly.

Cup2s are also superb, but only on a dry day with higher temperatures. They were OK today at ~10 degrees but into single figures I'd be a bit wary, especially if the road is slightly greasy as it is this time of year.

The PS4Ss are now on [:D]

Very confidence inspiring as I expected, especially in the drizzle and <10 degrees temperature I've been out in today. They feel maybe a touch softer on initial turn in and initial load, but nothing significant. I suspect it's maybe just the effect of the extra tread blocks moving around slightly.

If anyone's condsidering the swap, I'd say go for it. They're definitely going to be a better fit for my usage in all weather.

Now I need to find a second set of GT4 wheels for the Cup2s then I'll get signed up for an Oulton Park club track day. I need to tick it off the bucket list...

Thank you Dave

Keep any eye on https://www.9apart.co.uk/and their ebay shop for those wheels. I`m hoping to p/ex my CR - Cup2 set for a 981 GT4 Winter wheel / tyre package later this week, I `ll ask Simon (Butterworth) if he has any 982 wheels coming in

Awesome - thanks Andrew!

I think the 981 series wheels will also fit my 718, so I've got two possible bites of the cherry. Colour or condition doesn't really matter, as long as they're not trashed, as I know a great local place that can refurb them.
