718 Cayman GT4 is here – at long last.!

Re the PTS thing, I think I’d be a bit miffed if the Centre treated me like that Dave. Hopefully he’ll get a decent trade-in as compensation, although I wouldn’t count on it.

Yes, a good opportunity to have an oil and filter change if the back end’s off. Just make sure that they use the latest Mobil 1 ESP X3 0W-40 oil for a car with the GPF.

Fitting MPS4S tyres would be a good idea if you’re planning to use the car over the winter months.

Jeff

Yep, the new Mobil 1 is what's going in Jeff.

I'm not really planning on using the GT4 over winter, but I'm not overly keen on these Cup2s in the wet and that's limiting my use of the car a bit.

Sounds sensible to me Dave. With 400+ horsepower on tap you’ve got to have confidence driving in any conditions, and you may decide that they’re a better year-round tyre for you and maybe sell-off the Cup2s for a decent price given that you’re not a track-day fanatic.

Jeff

I'm planning on keeping the Cup2s and refitting them next Spring [:D]

For anyone else who's interested, it seems N0 PS4Ss in 295/30/20 are in short supply at the moment although they should be available late Sept/early Oct so I'll hang on until then before deciding what to do for my car. I suspect I'll swap them then, PS4Ss have been epic on Mrs Twinfan's Focus RS.

Thanks Dave,

I don`t see those rear PS4S on the Michelin site yet ?

I also was concerned about the Cup 2`s in mixed / wet conditions but have pushed myself to venture out in them and the more experience I get the better I feel. Test will come when the temperature really drops away

Am hoping to find a Winter compromise / N rated tyre for my spare 19" CR wheels but will then need to see if Porsche approve this as the handbook does not cover this fitment

Andrew,

According to the Configurator it looks as though 20” Carrera S wheels are the recommended fitment for winter tyres. I suppose you can check your 19” wheels for clearance, etc., but probably best to ask your Dealership for best advice. Both 18” and 19” wheels are suitable for the lesser 718s but I guess that the GT4 is a different beast and your CR wheels may have different offsets.

Jeff

Andrew,

If you are in the market for a set of 20" Carrera S wheels from a 718 fitted with P Zeros then please have a look at my ad in the 'For Sale' section.

Thanks

Thank you Jeff

The handbook mentions a second set / size of 20" wheels for Winter`s, these are the same width as the CR`s but have slightly deeper offsets. I have found a set of these on ebay but at almost OPC prices I am looking for an alternative

A tyre - wheel configurator www.willtheyfit.com indicates that by increasing the 19" tyre aspect ratio by 5% I can have an almost identical rolling radius but have only found front tyres that are N rated, so far ! The site also provides a positive but general arrangement pictorial reference so will test fit them first

Last resort is a set of N rated Michelin Winters for the existing wheels

20-inch wheel FA / RA 8,5J x 20, RO 61 / 11J x 20, RO 50

Summer tires FA / RA 245/35 ZR20 (91Y) / 295/30 ZR20 (101Y) XL

Snow tires FA / RA 245/35 R20 91V M+S / 295/30 R20 97V M+S

20-inch wheel FA / RA 8,5J x 20, RO 57 / 10J x 20, RO 50

Snow tires FA / RA 235/35 R20 92V M+S / 275/30 R20 97V M+S

The PS4Ss in 295/30/20 aren't on Michelin's site you're right and it's becuase they're new. They do exist though! I'm in two minds about swapping as it's ~£1000 to do so for four tyres, and I really like the Cup2s as they just GRIP in the dry!

I think brake clearance will be an issue with different wheels on a GT4, so I'd personally take care if you're thinking of taking a punt on any unless they match Porsche approved specs.

A quick exhaust update - all done and ready for fitting on Thursday morning. Bring it on...

Wow. That looks a very cool system. i would love to hear what it sounds like and if it makes any difference in performance. Just done the NC 500 in the GT4. what an amazing car. Even in torrential Scottish rain .

Front splitter a bit if a pain at times. 1600M in a week.

Cup2s and PS4Ss are very similar in price, roughly £600 for a pair or rears fitted and £400 a pair of fronts. PS4Ss are very slightly cheaper but there's not much in it.

I'm thinking at the moment that I'll see how long I can cope with Cup2s. They are fabulous in the right conditions and after having a hoot driving around on Saturday I'm loathe to change a winning formula...

Sport Maxx Race2 have been well reviewed in the US. The first version was panned on yhe HT4.

Camskill now have the N1s in stock.

front £165

rear £253

Ninemeister have done a really great job on the exhaust Dave. Let’s hope that it sounds as good as it looks.! I’m sure it will.

Jeff

Cheers Jeff, I think it looks great too. They were saying the welds aren't quite perfect given how tough inconel is to work with but it looks pretty tidy to me. Also they've focussed on getting the bends as smooth as possible to ease gas flow with no sharp corners. All in all I think it's a neat looking system designed and built in the UK, and even the exhaust valves are UK supplied.

Videos and installed pics to be done on Thursday morning, which I'll post if folks are interested.

Yes, I believe that inconal is very difficult to work with Dave but from the pics it looks as though they’ve made a good stab at it and as you’ve pointed out before, once installed it won’t be on show...unfortunately!

Given that the exhaust valve actuators seem to be the weak point on these systems, hopefully the UK-sourced items will be more durable. Do you know who is the supplier? I seem to recall reading that the Porsche endurance cars use aerospace-quality items but offhand I can’t recall who supplies them.

Hope it all goes smoothly for the installation on Thursday. Keep us posted.

Jeff

I think the UK firm that supplies the valves is called Ceritek? We don't know who the Porsche supplier is, but these UK ones are supposedly as good and not the variable quality standard Chinese produced items...
