718 Cayman GT4 is here – at long last.!

My dealer called me yesterday and although my build slot for early October has been locked down, gave me the opportunity to change to PDK if I wanted to for an extra £2,000. I appreciated the call, which he didn’t have to make, but given that my car will be “Sunday’s and funday’s” car to use Jeff’s phrase, I have decided to stick with manual. It might be the last manual car that I’ll buy...

A PH user claimed they were told December build for January delivery at the earliest if they switched to PDK. With the potential for a 10% price rise post-Brexit they've stuck with their current manual order.

Good call Martin - but I’m biased as belonging to the ancient tribe of the Manual Shifters. Unfortunately there aren’t many of us left nowadays; we’re a dying race. [:(]

I find it interesting to hear that you’re able to spec PDK despite the fact that the build has been locked-down. I know that it’s probably a one-off, but if it can be done for PDK at this stage then why not other options?

I disagree re. the GT4s Jeff. The engine in the 981 is nowhere near as good so you're getting a large improvement that would cost you £10k(?) to do aftermarket on a 981 with intake, remap, exhaust etc. Out of the box the 718 engine is fabulous, see the dyno chart comparisons for the evidence - flat curves and linear torque and power.
I agree completely with your comments Dave. The 718 GT4 is a much better car, with significant improvements over the 981 in the engine, chassis and aero departments, and somewhat unfounded gripes about the subdued sound-track are being addressed by some owners, yourself included.

As you quite rightly point out it would be very expensive to modify the engine on a 981 to get an equivalent performance level, but apart from a small hard-core I doubt that the majority of the 650-odd 981 owners would consider doing that, meaning that most likely the average owner would need to stump-up £20k to £30k to get into 718 ownership and that’s assuming they can actually get a slot and a trade-in price around £65k [optimistic?] with £10k+ of options on a new 718.

I think this is right Jeff. Several incremental improvements, a new car and warranty for £30-40k. I am in the tiny minority (with TDT/CW) who had modified his 981. Two factors at play 1. I will have spent about £11k on the Dundon D4 kit (by buying second hand where possible). This will close my engine's performance at/near to a 718 GT4, but this is before the tuners will find the missing RS power in the new engine. I think I will be able to sell most of the Dundon equipment when I sell the car in the future. So I have been kidding myself that her £11k actual cost will be much lower than a £30-40k upgrade. 2. Mrs Snow would not support a new GT4, my 981 caused enough grief. Mind you, I didn't ask her about it before I bought it!

I am looking forward to finally seeing a 718 in the flesh. I still havent' seen a 981 GT4 on the roads and I know there are 650 of them !

That was a very brave move Richard. [:(] Has she forgiven you yet..??

Mostly, but I am wrapping the car dark metallic blue or grey/silver...to make it is a little less shouty !

Not really that expensive, IPD plenum and 82mm throttle body £1,400, 200 cell Manifold £2,500, Ehresmann tune £2,000 or Litchfield and you are at free breathing 415 HP for c£6k. You would probably want a DSC box for £1,300 to improve the suspension damping to get to in all material aspects, a 718 GT4 equivalent.

...proving that apologising is easier than pleading..

Visited OPC this morning, PDK discussed - cars available on a first come first served basis - leave a deposit and when availability is released a build slot will be allocated. Deposit being refundable. Brexit hike considered unlikely.

Configurator now includes the PDK option.

? … why does it cost £60 more to have the rear Porsche logo in black on the GT4 vs on the GTS !

First come first served? That would be a novelty with the GT cars Andrew - I’ve supposedly been on what I can only think is a fictitious list for more than 5-years and still not even a peep!

I would imagine the latest price hike for MY2021 has included any potential adjustment for a no-deal Brexit since Porsche will want to avoid increasing the price again in January if they can avoid it.

Another equipment/pricing inconsistency is the fact that although the Chrono Package is standard on the GTS and Spyder it’s a £336 cost option on the track-oriented GT4. Figure that out!

Just out of interest does anyone know if pts has been available on any 718 gt4 or gt's 4.0.?

I’ve just noticed that there’s a chap on PH who has secured a CGTS in a rather fetching Oslo Blue for the princely sum of £6,986. He says that it’s one of two PTS allocations for the UK in the first half of 2021, so it looks as though PTS cars are going to be very rare beasts.

Oslo Blue is going to be on a Spyder, Jeff. The PHer already owns a GTS 4.0 Boxster but in Python Green.

[just had a look at oslo, nice colour would look good on a gts or a spyder quote=Twinfan]

Thanks for the clarification Dave - the Spyder will look good in that colour.

A Boxster and Spyder? Lucky chap, although I‘m guessing that the GTS will go when the Spyder arrives.

Yep, the GTS will go. He wanted a Spyder but was given the runaround so ordered a GTS, then they offered him a Spyder. I think I'd be pretty annoyed but they must have enough cash that it's not a problem to lose a fair bit on the GTS so quickly.

I've just realised that whe I get my exhaust fitted next Thursday the back end will of course be stripped down in order to fit it. So it would be an ideal opportunity to get a cheap oil and filter change done at the same time woudn't it? Should only be the price of the parts and a touch of labour, so hopefully £200 rather than the £350 my OPC quoted me. I didn't bother getting it done before now at full price, but I'll take advantage of the 'discount' now it's available.

I'm also investigating having Michelin PS4S tyres fitted now there's an N0 rear tyre available to match the N0 front that's been available for a while...
