944 Cup Car

Here's the badge removed from the car. Difficult to say if it's a copy or not but it has a Porsche part number

Very, very, very, VERY nice!

Have you managed to drive it much yet? I'd be interested to know how they drive on UK roads and how different it feels to a regular 951?..

I've done about 140 miles in it. It drives really well, but as it is set up for track it does tram line a bit more on poorer surfaces. On smooth fast flowing A roads the turn in is excellent and gives a much more confident feel turning in at speed. I would expect with track tyres up to temperature this would improve even more?

Noise levels aren't bad even with no arch liners and a lack of insulation. The manual rack feels excellent at speed but harder work manoeuvring at standstill. The small wing mirrors give a slightly reduced view but other than that it's easy to drive and with the Recaro race seat it feels really comfortable to be sat in [:)]

Great car Martin! Be interesting to know how much it weighs and if you ever get it onto a dyno. There were always rumours of 'Cheater' turbos in some Cup cars but perhaps that was only in the US?
Congratulations for a wonderful car.

Same in Europe. The story was that there were a couple of cars with the power upped to flatter guest drivers.

This was taken to the extreme by the owner of the red turbo cup at Silverstone many years ago. He believed that his had a special chip that boosted it from the standard 250 to 500 hp. [8|]

Difficult to say if the power has been upped, the car is definitely lighter than standard and the Magnesium Teledial wheels aid the rolling weight of the car but I wouldn't say it is any quicker than other 944 Turbo's I've driven and owned, it just seems to handle that much better due to the suspension, wheels, weight savings and rigidity with the cage and braces fitted.

that part number on the badge is the normal one used on all cars from 1974 to 1995

i did a search in PET for it

Super straight Cup car Martin, the panel gaps are really good, I'm sure you will keep her that way.

There is a specialness around a real "turbo cup" a purposeful presence, and the provenance of being raced to within an inch of its life. Seeing them dancing around fast sweeping circuits, in formation with each other, using every millimetre of tarmac plus the kerbs.....great sport.

That centre console switch.......brake balance??

Has she an interesting history?

good luck with her

The Centre switch is the ABS reset switch which was there to reset ABS if needed mid race

I will do a thread on history etc. when I have some time, but it was a successful car driven by 2 well known German racers one who is doing Le Mans this year in a top car [;)]

Wow. Thanks for sharing pics and info Martin. As has been pointed out by others... probably the best two car 944 collection out there!

And if any one, I mean anyone, tells you [;)][;)] its got the wrong hubs for abs, please stick to your story and ignore their error [:)][:)][:)]

we will be listening intently, look forward to it

Single bonnet stay just like early 924's-car is fantastic Martin-are you bringing it to Haigh Hall in August?

Back on bonnet badges... [&:]

I found the only shot I have from the Cup car that turned up to Silverstone many years ago (the 500BHP one).

Blowing it up it looks like a proper metal bonnet badge fitted. I was convinced I remembered it having a sticker instead.

Given that the turbo cup was a dedicated race car, why would they not look at details like this? Every gramme off a race car is lap time, after all. [8|]

All the other Cup cars I have seen and the videos I've watched show the cars with proper badges not stickers.

Agree it's strange that they didn't use stickers, but as they started as production shells maybe this was intended?

Does anyone know if the 964 Cup cars had metal badges?

They didn't really try that hard to take weight off or even had to being that it was a single make series.

I wish someone made a copy of those bonnets though, they have a really neat recessed shape for the bonnet pins.

Martin,
Haigh Hall, now R18's annual event instead of Woodvale is on Sunday-August 9th this year-& you would definitely upset Hassan[:)]
