944 Dyno Day Saturday 20th May 2006

ORIGINAL: Diver944

Thanks to everyone who came today [:)], we had 22 944s, one 924 and one 993 on the rollers with power levels ranging from 403bhp to 121bhp. Allan and his guys worked like trojans once again and this year we managed to get all the cars through by 2:30pm - very impressive.

I only wish my car had been one of them [:(] I even brought my reserve car but couldn't run it because one of the wheels has a buckle [&o]. Roll on next year [:D]

Thanks for organising it Paul, and thanks to Rick and John for capturing the days events.

Was good to put faces to the names at last.

Cheers

Dave K.

Echo those sentiments - thanks for organising it, especially given that your car did not get to run. And thanks for letting me tag along [:)]

Cheers

Pete

Another fantastic day!
Thanks to Paul for organising it, Allan & his guys for working so hard to ensure the smooth running of the day and all who came along to add a social element.

Yep, enjoyable day as always. As usual a chance to put more faces to names, and then to get home and realise someone was there that I still didn't speak to...

Cracking day out thanks Paul - nice to put some faces to the names, and of course fail to remember most of them!

Nice to see a bunch of down to earth enthusiasts, and nice to see some of the cars on here close up. Only sorry I couldn't stay longer, as the dyno runs were stragely addictive to watch!

Thanks from me too Paul and to all who helped put the day together, it was great to meet everyone. The info from the plots was invaluable not only for the headline figure [:)] but to put my mind at rest that the car wasn't running lean and that the boost gauge is accurate.

I'm now up in the Lake District having travelled 650 miles yesterday in all. Bit tired this morning [:(]

Echo all above,

Nice to see familar faces but so many names to remember so I`ll apologise in advance for the next time I see any of you and say.....................

" we last met at the Weltmeister RR day but I do apologise as I can't remember your name" [;)]

I was the non sunroof silver turbo driver with eggburger all over my face [&:] and at 253 bhp one of the weediest cars there [&o]

Yes thanks Paul, broke my 330barrier with a 342 and confident there is more to come ;)
Was suprised at how much the hoses inflate at 18psi - like balloons - scary

Tony

A great day and thanks to all as above.

Very gutted not to have been able to chat to most people. I was under orders to take pictures at a certain time from a certain place on each run so had to dash about a bit.

Looking forward to seeing the revised league table now [;)] even if 300+ isn't the event it used to be.

A superb day again and glad to see it seems to becoming an annual event, i'm just sorry I had to duck out a few hours early. The info gained from the plots is very informative whether your car is modified or not. The Weltmiester guys did themselves proud again and worked their backsides off. Big thanks to Paul for organising, Rick C for building his database so we can access this info in the future, Fen for his rolling road plot consulting services and all the others busily beavering away in the background.

See you all there next year hopefully with another 30 or so horses in tow!

John 300+ in your case is still a good 40% increase over standard when factory fresh & in a car that is approaching it's 20th birthday.

A big dyno figure is great - what matters is whether the car is fast, tractable, reliable and useable

Absolutely spot on.

I`ve seen cars with cams so hairy they needed hair cuts every week, overlapping valves that meant they exhausted both ways, wouldn't tick over unless they were off the rev counter, power bands narrower than a thong, huge bobble throtties (cos they look good without considering length and taper), over injected (cos bigger injectors MUST give more power, musnt they?) etc etc etc

With these cars (944`s, turbos in particular) its important to level out the performance (ie:lag) and make them more tractable. I have spoken to many people at length and there are solutions individually but an overall package that is tried and tested isnt a bad thing either.

I can tell you that just bolting on a big turbo, cylinder head and intake....... will not give you a 400+ bhp 944 Turbo. ;-)

Andrew

So true. One only has to look at Ricks efforts last year. All of us were surprised that, despite having what we all thought were the best bits, the power wasn't that which would have been expected.

All power upgrades rely on a combination of components working together harmoniously. It only needs one of these components to be out of sync with the others (too big, too small, not working properly) and the full potential of the upgrade isn't realised.

Rick, Fen, Tony and many others, myself included, establish a regime of upgrades. One replaced component may not realise its full potential but may only be a stepping stone toward a subsequent upgrade. Bigger injectors are no good by themselves but equally a big turbo isn't going to work without control or adequate fuelling.

To my mind 90% of the fun of upgrading is making these decisions, understanding what you are trying to achieve, and establishing the options available. Subsequent success brings huge satisfaction tempered with the frustration of previous disappointment.

I have no issues with a turn key solution providing bolt on performance through a harmonious choice of components. I appreciate that some may not have the technical aptitude (or technical friends), time or interest to consider the options as I do. I feel sorry for them as they are missing out on a great deal of the fun of upgrading.

ProMAX, Jon9XXXX, Simon and many others provide a valuable service in presenting the less technical (or less stupid/cavalier) with, theoretically, a group of harmonious components. How harmonious those components prove to be only comes from experience, testing, luck and many other things.

Oi, that was 301.5bhp actually Andrew [;)]
Strange how numbers (even if small fry compared to some others) can put a big grin on your face. Think I need to get out more...

OK Guys.

Provisional figures should be up by the time you finish watching Top Gear.

http://www.cannell3.co.uk/944%20UK%20League.htm

It's not finished yet and there are the pictures to be added etc, but I know you want to see the results as soon as possible.

Please check your data in the main data table and send corrections and addions to rick@cannell.co.uk as soon as you can. Note that there a number op new sections.

Enjoy [:)] [:)]

Hi All,

Firstly, thanks to Paul Smith, Rick Cannell and WRC for making yesterday possible. It was a very well run day.

Andrew,

I was trying to be reasonable and edit your posting to try and stay within the bounds of the forum, though perhaps pushing the envelope a little.

I retained your post with my comments added so as to provide a level of ballance. As you seem to have the front to remove my comments with total disregard to my position as forum moderator I have now deleted all comments which could be considered as advertising your company.

I would respectfully suggest that you leave these comments well alone.

And that includes deleting it!

Now leave the damn thing alone!

Having tried to maintain a balance within this forum, and even pushing the rules in your favour, you have demonstrated your total disregard for my position. It takes a lot to wind me up but I offer you my congratulations as you have succeeded in annoying me now.

Hi John,

I can tell you that just bolting on a big turbo, cylinder head and intake (which are freely available from Lindsey Racing in the USA) will not give you a 400+ bhp 944 Turbo. ;-)

Andrew

Depends which dyno you take it to [:D][:D][:D]

So true.

On 15th July 2005 the bolt on washing machines at Thor said I had 247.6 rwhp. 3 days and no mods later Alan's dyno suggested that 30 of those horses had escaped as I only then had 217.9 (259.1 fly wheel).

This caused further annoyance as I'd paid Thor to tune the car and, at the Dyno day on 7th May 2005 we had 264.8 fly wheel. So they actually managed to loose the best part of 6 horses even though they told me they'd found 30.[8|]

A couple of hours of free tuning on our local dual carriageway got me a better running car and 226.3 rwhp (268.7 Fly wheel) so I managed to capture the horses I'd lost at Thor but no where near their original claims.

If it ain't done on "The Rollers of Truth" it doesn't count.

PS Sorry to keep swaping between fly wheel and rear wheel but I didn't get a fly wheel hp from Thor.

Bu99er - I wish I'd gone to Thor, I could probably have claimed 400+ bragging rights too then [:D].

I'll be off to take piccies of my car on the ramp as soon as the sparkies that I forgot were coming to do some work today are done, and I'll start a new thread with the results. Having just spoken to Andy he has found a gudgeon pin and a few inches of con-rod on top of the bellhousing so far.

Is that serious, then ? [8|] [8|]

Right. I'm getting some feedback and additional information to update the tables. And League tables as well.

I have missed some graphs (and indeed entire cars) so I'll get Allan to fax through today when I give him a list. Sorry they'll be in black & white until I nip up there and pick up the originals. As you can imagine, it was a bit chaotic so some of you may have taken your graphs thinking that I had already scanned them.

Analysis will follow.

Rick.
