944 GBC - My 1992 944 S2 3.0 - The story so far !

I would read the small print of your insurance policy very carefully to satisfy yourself that the insurance company would be OK with these in the case of an accident.

As far as the MoT is concerned, you can use cheese straws for fuel lines as long as they don't leak at the time of the test [;)]

Correct sir

There is no RfR for fuel lines made from cheese straws [;)]

Just read it and there is no mention of fuel lines made from Cheese Straws anywhere on the policy document [8|]

By the way if anybody else wishes to pick faults with repairs carried out on my car near 10 years ago when I did NOT own it then feel free to take this up with either the previous owners or the garages concerned and NOT me !

Or please go play keyboard Warriors on other peoples threads - Thank You !

Pick faults with any of my repairs and we can discuss it but show me your pile of scrap first so I can pick the faults with your cars as well ! [;)]

My 1991 built 944 S2 has "crimped" front suspension struts and as such the options for upgrades are limited

The only kit I have seen other than Porsche standard units is an adjustable Koni Kit

As I prefer to have non-adjustable "Plug and Play" front and rear suspension then Bilsteins are my only choice
but they are only available for earlier strut casing with a screw top

So having a pair of worn out front struts to play with (many thanks Chris from Manchester) I have set about stripping the units

Well the top cap is for decoration only as the 4 crimps are the made with the strut tube

More pics will follow but my lamb dinner is a calling - lol

I'm sure you'll do a proper job of the struts Dave and I'm looking forward to seeing a step by step report.

Having Googled "Bilstein 944" there are lots of people being sold these inserts only to realise they aren't the straight swap that they are advertised as, well certainly not on the later cars.

An 'off the shelf' conversion kit would be a winner if someone came up with the parts or offered a strut refurb/px service, or even sold the adapter collar for the strut tube.

Cheers, Paul

Thanks Paul

Yes the suppliers seem to "forget" that the later 944 strut is crimped but happily sell the unsuspecting a set of 4 shocks that only the rears fit straight on

Luckily I "do my homework" before taking on any task and I have a CAD/CNC machinist on standby to turn my cigarette packet idea into a piece of useable steel

and yes plenty of pics will follow for those that are genuinely interested [;)]

I think you will find most people are actually trying to be helpful.

It is a fuel line after all. [:'(]

That have performed perfectly well for the last 10 years and have passed every MOT since being fitted

Sounds to me like you are all paranoid over my fuels lines because you dread looking at your own !

944's eat fuel lines for breakfast so go check your own and I will look after mine - thanks for your concerns

As I said before show me your piles of scrap before slagging off my pile of scrap ! [;)]

I will say I had no intention of upsetting you, For that sorry

And I have replaced my lines with genuine ones, not a fun job either

Fill your boots, there's plenty of non standard parts on my car that can be picked at.

I made my comment to highlight them to you as I figured you might not be aware what they actually are (which you basically confirmed) Knowing these are used in plumbing, air lines and beer dispense systems (the latter being a previous trade of mine) I wasn't aware of any 944's running on Larger so figured they might not be suitable and in the spirit of the club I thought I would share the knowledge for your benefit, so don't be so touchy [;)]

All that said I must commend the previous owner on an ingenious temporary fix but that's all they should be.

Monkey is absolutely right. We feel we have a very friendly and helpful forum and very few of us actively try to upset anyone, though it is sometimes frustratingly easy to do so when trying to communicate purely with the written word.

Everyone has apologised now so let's get back to a very interesting thread [:)]

Apologises are not needed

My 944 is 23 years old and a 10 year old fuel line repair is working perfectly fine so some would say it has lasted just as long as Porsches original pipework ! [;)]

When and if I have to deal with a fuel line problem then I will deal with it accordingly

All the remains of the original shock absorber now removed

Oil was black and had a badly burnt smell

Also note the shattered "piston ring" from around the damper piston

Dont think that was working very well !

I better go put the kettle on at my friends CNC shop

Right after a couple of coffees at the engineers we now have 2 solutions

1/ An internal sleeve (similar to what others are doing with "cut off" old strut threads)

2/ An external collar that fits over the original strut

The internal sleeve will look more "OE" when finished

But the external collar will allow the Bilstein protective bellows (supplied with the insert) to be secured correctly

I will also be fitting a nylon sleeve lower down inside the strut casing to centralise the insert

Have even sourced a RAL powder coat colour that is similar to Bilsteins

I aim to media blast the casing, attach the adaptor, powder coat the strut and fit the insert - job done

What may be feasible is strut casings converted on an exchange basis

Very interesting-I would like to upgrade the front struts on my red 924S trackday car-I suggest you use the new "Jeremy Clarkson Media to blast them however-he seems to have an interest in suspension at the moment[:)]

I call him Jeremy Klaxon i.e. loud, irritating and best turned off. A good thread this one - unfortunately for me I have just fitted a pair of genuine Porsche items as I was given to understand nothing else would fit. Oh well - yer spends yer money ......... Best regards to all 944 owners .
