944 Insurance recommendations and prices - FAQ thread

I've just renewed with manning. Last year I had a new UK license, despite being over 40, having moved from Canada. Last year the quote for a 1986 lux was £1800. The renewal is just under £1100. Still an arm and a leg but coming down quickly. They indicated that next year I should be seeing a similar percentage decrease. If my Canadian insurance company had not deleted records after three years (barstewards) it would at least 600 lower. Ian

I'm with RH similar risk but my renewal is £50 more, when did you start the policy ?.

Just called my insurers (Footman James) to tell them about the new modifications to my 944 Turbo SE. The surcharge, for the extra 50 bhp, was £39, pushing my annual premium from £180 to £220 approx. So, about an additonal 80p per year per additonal horsepower!

Classic Line won't insure my Lux on a classic policy as it's my only car. I see that other people here seem to have classic insurance on only car Porsches with CL - is it to do with mileage per year or something? (I was asking for 7,500 miles). I did ask CL, but the chap didn't know...

Does anyone offer a classic policy you can use your NCD on? 944 is only car at present and policy with Heritage (KGM) is good value with agreed £10k value but my NCD is not applicable and will expire after 1 year I'm led to believe? I have 14 years I don't want to lose! So I need guaranteed value, use of NCD and good price? Thanks in advance Stuart

Hi Stuart, Interesting, as I've not seen insurers offer a "classic" policy on a main driver before. I had to show evidence that I have another vehicle when I took mine out with Classicline, but that was 7 years ago so it might have changed. Companies will usually credit you some, or all, your no-claims if you let it lapse, for instance you have a company car for a few years. If you've not had a claim on your classic policy then you'll be considered a good risk just as with any other policy, but it's worth calling around. You might be better off with a normal policy and use an official valuation to argue in the event of a claim? So long as you declare the value, and have an industry-approved valuation (such as the free Club one), you should get a reasonable settlement and certainly above book value. Risky though, and a modified Turbo will be a hassle to get a proper quote on from the big insurers. [&o] I'm renewing mine today. Being bored I looked around, and could have saved over £100 by going to Direct Line (who have a 20% sale on), and not had any mileage restrictions. I've decided the extra is worth it, the cost will go up next year and not be so much of a saving of course, and I'm keeping the classic policy with the higher valuation, and a few extras like the option to buy the salvage in the event of a write-off. It's a tough one though, and I can see more people taking the cheaper option if the classic policies don't join the price war going on between the major insurers.

Thanks Paul. IIRC they were happy I was on the wife's policy for her car but they said it wouldn't have been a deal breaker. They know it's my main ride and even cover me to take it to work! Of course the other option is I ensure wifey's car and make her a named driver thus continuing with the good deal I have at present whilst using and maintaining my NCD. I suppose I will see what they quote for renewal come June and take it from there. Stuart

Just renewed mine Lancaster insurance Fully Comp inc windscreen Ltd to 3000 miles Kept on drive £550 excess ( includes compulsory excess ) I'm 57, clean licence, service manager - car is insured as a classic / 2nd car ......... £102.39 ( from £117 last year ) [:D][:D][:D] Norm

I got my through RH, am 50 with 3 points for using a phone (don't ask), car is 944 S2 cabrio kept in garage - restricted to 5k miles pa but covers wife and european travel with option to buy salvage £168.

Just had a weird one...insured the 944T through Aviva (with Modifications stated) for the past year and a bit and they actually dropped from £380 to £352 upon renewal in February! I called them up to switch the policy to the 968, up the mileage and change my address and they wanted £250 more! and they wanted to up my mandatory Excess to £500!! (plus my voluntary at £350) I queried this and was told it was a high-powered sports car, but when I said that it was unmodified and actually lower power than the 944T he didn't have an answer. Also found out that they can't be competitive apart from at renewal time, so Tescos actually came in cheaper at £404, so with my club-card discount that was £381! (with 12,000 miles a year, £350 total excess and business use) Bearing in mind that my Wife's insurance increased by £59 just moving from a Cambridgeshire village to a Northamptonshire Village, I am pretty happy with that! Also I can keep my existing policy running on the 944 for a few days until 944man can get down here to pick it up (Aviva will charge a £47 cancellation fee, which is a pain, but not enough to stop me)

Re NCD. Sureterm asked me (when insuring my MX-5 NB) whether Id like to send them my proof of NCB letter. They would hold it and when I left, provide a new letter of entitlement with the same number of years that I had when joining them. One thing in their favour.

just tried A plan (claire) for renewal, 3000 miles PA, agreed value, £95 with £50 excess. bobs your uncle fannys your aunt.

I thought the above was unbeatable However Gary moulson at Keith Michaels, managed £85 fully comp 3k miles pa, £50 excess, agreed value, can buy the salvage back in event of a total loss, extra mileage purchasable for £40 so 3000 miles to 5000 miles extra £40. his direct number is: 02082880275 you can say I put you in touch.
