944 Insurance recommendations and prices - FAQ thread

Hi guys, new member here! So I've been looking at Porsches for a while and it seems that 944's are well within my budget. I use the bus for work as £40 a month for a bus pass is cheaper and easier than using a car, so the 944 would be for weekends really, a bit of a project.. So limited mileage wouldn't be a problem. The real problem is; I'm 22... License for 4 years, 1 year NCB, had points on my provisional, but they've expired and were 5 years ago so they're out of the equation. All the usual stuff, parents as named drivers, keep the car standard if it helps, limited miles, only used for social use, kept on drive, alarm etc etc.. So I'm just looking for recommendations. I know it will vary massively and I need to shop around, but for a £3k car, the insurance quotes I'm getting from comparison sites are the same amount! Any ideas would be great, thanks. Chris.

Aviva wanted a massive hike when I changed from the 944 Turbo to the 968 Sport (from £350 to £620 for 8,000 miles PA!!) So I got a quote of £420 from Tesco, which then came down to £381 when I put my clubcard details in, and this is for 12,000 miles a year and a lower excess than the Aviva Policy. One other point is that Aviva only go to a maximum of 5 years NCB, so I had to send my Aviva NCB statement and my previous insurer's NCB statment to prove that I had 12 year's worth

R.H classic again for me I just insured a 944 turbo for 130 pounds with free Euro break down cover ? last time I paid 220 (also with RH) The bonus is they allow cancellations and only charge 10 pounds admin fee plus pro rata on the policy so if like me you often change cars thats a bonus. Regards Mas

Blooming ek. Thats good I've re-insured with RH, which I do recommend, a tad over 200 quid, a shame they won't give me agreed valuation (£8,000) because I don't put my T in the garage over night, but still good value.

Submitted my (free) PCGB valuation letter to my insurer (Mercedes Insurance / Aviva) and they accepted the valuation and updated my policy for free. Now my '89 2.7 Lux is on the policy at £6k (she scrubs up well..) - result!

Just renewed: 87 944 turbo. 40-ish. not the main car, SDP. Bit of a run around. Generally RH produced the cheapest quotes: £143 in the garage. 5K miles, SDP agreed value or not. £209 on the drive. 5K miles, SDP no agreed value. Then I rang my previous insurer, Classic Line, and they beat the RH drive quote slightly: £205 for 3K miles on drive, possibility of agreed value, £350k excess.

Well today I took my S2 off a standard everyday type policy, rang or 'on-lined' all the usual classic car suspects then gave the new PCGB insurance partners Lockton a call. They took my details and promptly called me back, they also beat Footman James by £300, I think FJ were way off the marque with their quote. Anyway it came out at £255 including Fully Comprehensive policy No need to use NCB £ five figure agreed value (club valuation) 5000 miles pa Full UK and European breakdown cover ( I just paid the RAC £36 for 5 days over for the museum trip) Salvage claim back It probably is possible to buy a cheaper policy but I put a blue on the partnership with the club and hopefully a smother claim process should the worst happen Cheers, Paul

Date quoted 24.05.13 Age 31 no points 944 turbo - 1991 Kept on Driveway 4k Miles per Annum RH Classic - £189 Per Annum Lancaster - £521 Per Annum (apparently as it is a 1991 and this falls into a newer group!?)

A word of warning about RH Insurance I just renewed at the end of February and whilst perusing the ammendments to the cover noticed that they Endorsement 896 'will not pay any theft claim under section 2 -loss or damage to your vehicle-of this document for loss or damage occurring between the hours of 10pm and 6am `unless your vehicle is locked in a private garage when it is parked at or in the proximity of your private dwelling place'

I think that has been in force for a while. This year RH bumped my premium 25% for the increase in value though.

Classicline were the only company who would quote me when I got the first 944 some 12 years ago. Every other classic policy required the car to be garaged, and mine's on the drive.

I think a lot of the classic policies are more geared to cars either with higher values, or being stored more than used. [&o]

I've been with RH for 7 or 8 years now, I've done around 18k in that time. Reckon I'll investigate a multicar policy with an everyday car insurer next time...
