944 S2 Clock

Failing some way of getting a definitive answer on the part required perhaps someone could tempt a supplier of such items to allow them to test fit any likely candidates on the promise of an order for 100+ units if a working one is identified.

Personally I only ever had one fail (in my cab) and I just fitted the Turbo's one and left the Turbo with a hole in the dash, but it can only be getting ever more common, so if I were in the position of need I'd be more than happy to front up even a few hundred pounds as I imagine you could offer exchange units with new displays for sale for £25 each and easily corner the entire market.

I'm not about to get involved as that sort of thing is ten times harder in NZ than the UK, and I don't even need one display, but someone could earn some thanks and a few bob in the bargain for a bit of legwork - or maybe not get anywhere I guess...

VDO (manufacturers of the unit) don't want to know, just referring you to the original manufacturer of the vehicle (Porsche), who want huge sums of money for a replacement unit.

Oli.

Its the same story for the lap timers in the Mercedes 190 16v cars. They all leak and a few members on mercedes190.co.uk which im a moderator on have tried VDO only to be told they cant legally sell you a unit because Merc wont allow it!!!

Well I'm definitely going to look further into this whilst I still have the resources to do so.

I'll keep this thread updated if I make any progress. I've arranged a meeting tomorrow with a chap who maintains NHS vehicles but also happens to be an electrician and car nut so I'll see if he has any bright ideas.

I have dabbled in electonics before (MEng) at uni. I'll have a look at mine in detail at the weekend. I'm sure I can contact some fellow geeks and find a suitable source.

I'll keep you posted.

P.S What does the bulb do if not provide the backlight?

Will

Excellent, it looks like being able to fill in a form such as the following would be a good start re getting a custom manufacturing price:

http://www.midascomponents.co.uk/discuslcd.asp

I'm just deciding whether to be brave and dismantle my one and only clock so an electrician can get the details for me or whether to buy another broken clock to allow me to do the same without a nasty hole in my dashboard.

Nice find... I'll try to take mine apart at the weekend and see if I can fill that form in. I'd be interested to compare notes....

Does anyone have any pictures of aclock they've taken apart before?

Will,

Here are pictures of the display; if you want some of the clock then I could take some.

You can see the 'bled' screen quite clearly - which is why it is in pieces on my desk rather than being screwed into the car!

Matt - that form looks like an EXCELLENT find, well done. If you want me to post you my screen (and thus save you having to dismantle your clock) then I'd be quite happy to - it's not doing much good here, gathering dust. While that form looks the business, I don't know enough about the display to fill in all the details, although your sparky friend would probably be able to do a lot better, particularly if he had a screen in his hands (mine) to take details off. In fact, having two screens - one wired up and working (i.e. the one in your car) and one to look at more closely may well give him all the information he needs.

If this sounds like a good way forward then PM me your address and I'll get it in the post.

Sorry to go on, but is the back lighting functionality part of the LCD panel? or the bulb...

Wish I could contriute more rather than just ask questions...

Will

Will,

Sorry. Yes, there are light bulbs in it. Well, one, and it screws in (on a bayonet) at the back. (The clock itself if a 3cm x 3cm x 3cm - ish cube, which is easily removed from the dashboard by means of the above procedure. It's got a hefty 4-pin multiplug on the back of it, and a bayonet-fit bulb beside it. The bulb itself is readily available from any motor factors - I think I spent 50p on one when it blew about 2 years ago.)

This light bulb is the only illumination in the clock.

Excellent... I think thats the prob with mine.... it doesn;t look like its leaking.

I'll have a look and see if I can help with that form though...

Oli - Thanks for the offer, I may well take you up on that. I've lured another electrical type into talking about it with a few beers tonight so I'll find out what he thinks he'll need to get the specs.

Incidentally, I rang Douglas Valley to see what they would want for a broken clock earlier and they said £20. I can't decide whether that's good or bad, I guess it's about what I expected.

I remember trying to buy a new clock not long after I brought my car, 11 years ago. They wanted nearly £50 at the time, which I thought was a bit much so I left it.

Now of course they are 5 times that.

Good luck with your efforts guys, I'm definately in, assuming I don't manage to sell my car first (which is looking increasing remote at the moment [][][])

I think DV quoted me £80, +VAT + P&P for a working clock. £20 for a dead one is a bit cheeky (but then, as I said on another thread, DV are rip-off merchants IMHO.)

Matt, keep me posted on what I can do to help. More than happy to post my screen if it helps the cause. If the model can be identified as an off-the-shelf part then that would be superb. If it's a special, I'd be very interested in the price for, say, 100 ...

Oli.

Agreed and will do. I'll see what I can find out over the weekend with a view to contacting Midas as a starting point next week when I'm confident of sounding like I know what I'm talking about.

I also have a dead clock that anyone is welcome to for free if it will help investigation.

£20 for a broken one [][][] WTF are they playing at.

I heard recently that they are buying up all the 944 spares from different breakers around the country. It will be bad news if they are the only place we can find S/H spares from in the future

Dv had a lot of 944's in this week, more than ive seen before so maybe there is some truth in the rumors!!. Regarding the clocks ive put a 968 analogue on it the centre console and am looking for idea's to blank the old one out ??

Someone (Rennbay?) do an air/fuel meter for the clock hole. It's a coloured LED type. I didn't buy one beause I thought it looked a bit Disney, but I wanted an AFR gauge rather than a clock hole filler.

Dumb thing to do if they are. 944s are too ubiquitous and cheap to pick up and break, so it is quite an easy thing for someone with space and time to do.
Plus the fact I doubt Porschapart would sell them their stock.
