944 S2 Clock

ORIGINAL: random hero

Has anyone got any idea's to blank the clock and button holes up as my clock is knackered and i have another clock fitted in the centre console anyway.

There was a company doing a boost guage to fit, IIRC. Could an outside temp gauge be installed, or a second didgital speedo, set to read very low, for my passenger? [8|]

Chaps,

Resurrecting an old thread ... I have just called Midas Components (there was a link earlier on this thread to a form where you could enter LCD screen specifications) to ask about custom made screens. The person there was very helpful, but apparently custom-made LCD screens need to be ordered in minimum quantities of around 10,000, whereupon they cost about £2 each for the size we want. So, yes, that's an outlay of £20,000.

The guy also explained that the screen is almost certainly a part made specially for the car, and therefore won't be available off-the-shelf. That, combined with the total lack of any identification marks, kind of scuppers any idea of cheaply replacing the screen.

So, sorry. Drawn a blank again. Anyone else got any good ideas?

Approaching one of the retailers to buy 10,000 of them? [&:]

I'd guess that every one will fail eventually, so there would be a market for them over the years. At, say, £20 each we'd buy them, and there's a profit there long-term.

£20 each you'd need to sell 1000 of them to break even. Are there 1000 operational 944's left in the UK?

There may be a profit, but it's a heck of a long way away, and I can think of better things to do with £20k in the meantime ...

Worldwide? [8|]

That's why it'd have to be one of the big retailers. I'd have thought 100 would sell, they'd then have 9000 left as profit.

Worldwide, yes, but it woul take a very keen enthusiast to eb posting things as small as clock parts around the world to replace an LCD screen.

A big retailer - yes, possibly. I think it's beyond my capabilities (which was the original plan.)

I'm contemplating whether it's worth trying to make contact with VDO again. They will have the specifications of the screen, and possibly the means by which they could make some quite readily. They refused last time, telling me to go back to Porsche (who would only sell a complete clock assembly.) Do you think that a more formal approach from PCGB would cut any more ice? Tell me if this is a stupid idea!
