944 S2 Clock

Sorry Trev, i meant that that ad is for an LED bulb to replace the standard bulb only and not for the LCD display.
 
And the answer is that you couldn't just add it to your clock even if it were a display. The earlier discussion in this thread has been around trying to identify the specification of the display required to work as a replacement, all displays not being the same and there being no standard.
 
I see that now Fen. I read the listing as an LED 'display' not an LED 'bulb'. Had he included the wording 'LED bulb only', I reckon it would have then been cear to eveyone. Even me.

The screen size seems to be very similar (can't be sure whether it is the same or not) as the screen on a Mk1 Golf, whose instrument binnacles were also made by VDO. It may therefore be possible to nick a screen from one of these, but Mk1 Golf binnacles are getting hard to come by these days as well ...

I have tried a Mk1, and a Mk2 GTi instrument cluster, and these are both different to each other and to the 944 one. I have a MK2 instrument cluster on order from eBay - fingers crossed.

Ah, now i wish id noted all the cars i have taken the clocks out of to help here, ive stripped many, from many fords, vauxhalls, vws, mercs, from the era, and i have fitted the lcd from a different car into my clock, knowing it wouldnt work but it fits, its exactly the same size, same number of contacts even, on both contact points, but the contacts were slightly closer together than our Porsches(is an adapter possible,must be easier to change those bits of rubber contacts, any leckys here?), i fitted it anyway because im so tired of the rather sad dead look to a bled screen, the readin now is lit and blinks and has lines but not numbers, i have left it for now as the car feels slightly more alive than b4(v sad i know) and it doesnt flatten the battery or anything. And after all my searching i gave up,
My last thoughts on the matter were that one consistant difference was the clock we have has a stop clock.........i think this may be the clinching difference with all the rest. Im pretty sure the one i fitted was out of a sierra, now what i didnt do was look at one from a sierra cosworth, they did have the stop clock... but they also go for a premium, this would be my final port of call.
I hope this helps, im not searching as iv been living abroad, france, the scrappers are not so lenient on such things and every car is ****** french.
If anyone does solve this issue i will drive to whereever you are (in europe)and buy you a pint. But i think its time to phone china.... and have them manufactured lol

ive just asked this chap if it has the stop clock, i cant remember what yr the clock i wanted was from, when i was last looking into this i was bidding on the exact thing i wanted and had the cheek to ask the guy to take it apart , the dimensions matched but he wouldnt take it to counting the contacts, tad difficult even when the lcd is out!! Last time i went to buy one it went for something in the 40's so i didnt bother.

Argh readin this post has got me going again[8|]
 
lol, whilst looking around at cars i always wondered why people make a point of mentioning the clock working now i know why :)
 
My clock hasn't worked in the 3 years I have owned the car - even though I've spent thousands on it, I see no reason to spend any money fixing the clock. It doesn't make the car go any faster [;)]

Hi, sorry I didn't spot the previous bump - I had a long period of limited access.

Anyhow, the trail went a bit stale to be honest. I tried to make initial contact with Midas but failed, then got a new job, then moved house etc etc, and this dropped from my mind.

I don't have my car with me at the moment so I'll struggle to kick things off again anytime soon. It is still on my to do list though so unless somebody else picks it up I'll update when I finally get round to it. Unfortunately (well, from the point of view of this endeavour but fortunately from a career point of view) my new job pretty much has me working 24/7 at the moment.

No worries - I had forgotten my first bump, and was surprised to see it there when I came back to the thread!

If you are a little tied up with other stuff (and well done/comiserations on the job, whichever is most appropriate!) then I think I'll try those people with the form which you linked to a while ago. Tracing and replacing the screen would make a nice little project for these wetter/colder days ...

I'll keep you all posted.

just a thought; anyone tried to hack a small cheap lcd clock? if you could do it without destroying anything it could give you a working clock that you could restore in future to standard spec.

It depends upon what you are trying to achieve. Something to fill the hole in the dashboard? Bit of black tape will work. A useful clock? No need for one - there is one on my radio.

Ah sorry i was thinking it was a cheapish working clock you were after.

Thats just how my brain works tho; for example I have a space invaders arcade machine; rather than replace its 1978 corroded and broken innards with equally unreliable old technology i replaced it with a modern PC that runs an emulator. I wired the controls and coin mech to the PC and I did it without altering any of the original parts so I can restore it if needed. Nobody can tell. It even takes old 10p pieces.

LCD clocks come in all shapes and sizes; you can pretty much pull them to bits and put all the parts in 2-3 square centimetres of space. They have long lasting batteries and a lot have transparent panels. Invert the voltage to the panel and you get the 'white on black' display that could be backlit using the existing bulb. Id probably replace the bulb with an LED and stick a slightly opaque filter on the back of the panel to diffuse the light, do this in orange and you'd recreate the original glow.

I dont know what the space constaints are behind the dash but its something I'd consider and its no better or worse than getting something from a different car.

'Twas a good idea, to be sure. And one I had considered. And yes, it would be a pretty easy solution - the amount of space taken by the old clock is massive, and seems even more massive when you see how small digi clock mechanisms are. But I guess I am relishing the challenge (sometimes!) and really like the original solution. If I put a different clock in there, I know I would look at it on a regular basis and regret it! Loss of the stopwatch is probably the thing I'd miss most. Not that I have ever used it, just that losing it would seem a retrogade step to me.

One thing I would consider is fitting something more useful in there. On my string of old Golf GTi's there was always an MFA, which showed outside temperature, oil temperature, distance travelled, time, average speed, fuel consumption etc etc etc. If I could engineer one of those into the space in the 944 dashboard then I certainly would, but it would be a much larger project ... (still amazing that a 1981 Golf has such functionality, but a 1989 Porsche doesn't.)

Sounds like quite a project with that arcade machine. Bravo!

Cheers Oli, the job is definitely a good thing - I'm doing frontline work for a large charity now which is immensely satisfying but gives me precious little time to take on other projects!

If you do follow this up if I can be of help just give me a shout.
 
Has anyone got any idea's to blank the clock and button holes up as my clock is knackered and i have another clock fitted in the centre console anyway.
