944 Turbo S Engine Rebuild Thread

Apologies - there’ll be several individual posts, due to the forum following the Chinese One Child Policy when it comes to posting pictures. I know I can host online and link with img tags but I post on my phone mainly.


Engine was as together as it could be at this point. I must say, it’s a damn sight easier to set the 0.8mm reference sensor gap with the bellhousing off!

Running a single sensor with VEMS ECU with a 60-2 toothed trigger wheel machined (correctly this time I hope) into the flywheel.


Don’t know why the pics aren’t orientated correctly.
 
Recruit 3 other people, lift the engine up, slide the subframe in, put the engine mount bolts in.
 
Was pretty straightforward after that, removed the oil cooler, pushed the engine towards the front of the car, lowered the car and then slid the engine straight back onto the torque tube.
 
Ball joints reattached, rear castor mounts on and torque tube bolted up. The tie rod ends and the rest of the steering rack to reattach still.
 
Tonight‘s homework is working out how to use my spinny roundy lockwire pliers you lockwire the Ti wastegate bolts with.
 
I like the flywheel, crank sensor solution, certainly shows commitment to using a standalone ecu, neat solution.
I assume you chose not to use an S2 flywheel to not limit clutch coice?

Any reason, you didn't use a 36-1 behind the alternator pulley?

Must admit on mine an errant pop can in the road moved my sensor bracket once and adjusting belt tension is awkward with such a critical component bolted to the turnbuckle.
 
Wanted to stick with the 951 clutch arrangement. I did previously have a 36-1 crank mounted wheel as there was a machining error on the flywheel that we hadn’t picked up on before installation last time. Definitely committed to the aftermarket ECU choice, sold my old ones.


Here‘s a pic of it in place. Hoping I won’t need to refit it this time.
 
I see, I have the same one by the looks of it. Your bracket is way neater than the one I made.

Apologies if it's already mentioned but are you going wasted spark, sequential injection etc?
 
It’s the GoingSuperFast wheel which was pretty reasonable IIRC. What wasn’t was the bracket, about £85 landed IIRC and needed drilling out for an OEM sensor. I’ve got a shielded extension lead for it too.

Plan is to look at wasted spark, etc. in time. I need to make up some more wiring loom to tie the oil temp sensor into an ECU input so may put the necessary wiring for that in at the same time.
 
What you want is sequential injection and spark, using Audi R8 COPs and using an optical sensor on the mechanical distributor to provide CAS.

My engine has semi-sequential injection, allows it to run large injectors at factory idle levels.. nice and smooth.. just one of many Vitesse abilities, abilities which most other MAF units don't give. Built-in IAT sensor being another, plus if I want to use E85, no problem, just throw the switch..:)

My whole ECU runs off IAT [;)]

Popped into the garage for a couple of hours, one of my 968 brake cooling scoops had fallen off (the metal bushing had come loose from the plastic) - pressed them back in with a vice and a couple of repair washers will stop it happening again. Did the other side too as a bit of preventative maintenance.
 
Slave cylinder back in and then got this mahoosive hi-torque starter clocked and installed.
 
Wiring needed a bit of alteration for the exciter and of course the U.K. cars have an extra connector on the starter so that was a bit tight but all good.


Just got left to my own devices with my own lift and tools for the afternoon - bliss, I didn’t even have to make the coffees for once :rolleyes:

Got the rest of the bits all organised on the shelves with all the packets of bolts, etc. and fitted the radiator and support bracket too. That‘ll do for this year.
 
Looking good David... E85 pump?.. no idea.. mind you, it won't be long before petrol is just as rare, probably in my lifetime too....:)
 
I would think, if VEMs is anything like megasquirt, there's no need to add the Audi gubbins.
Any cam sensor to pick up a longer bolt in the threaded hole for the rotor arm and use whatever coils you like.
Obviously for sequential injection you'd need to run a new loom to the injectors as the turbo loom has them wired in pairs.


It is all extra complication. Myself I got as far as running some extra wiring for wasted spark and never bothered.


 
Audi R8 CoPs suggested because they offer the best bang for your buck (double the output of a Yaris and over 1/3rd more than an LS2). Usually used on MX-5 turbo conversions, which is where the demon tweak came from. That they are Audi is a coincidence: either of the alternatives would be implemented in the same manner.

I suppose that how much trouble it is depends on where you are already. I think that removing as much of the arcane 30yr old technology, along with its cracked original wiring, as you can is a massive forward step. Im not enthusiastic about wasted spark, as it was a compromise brought about by technical limitations and it pretty old hat now. There are some advantages to constantly working injectors but individual command for fuel and ignition for each cylinder is the ideal.

I think that it is pretty straightforward now, with the kit available to us, but everything is relative. I am currently trying to work out how to run a Speeduino ECU in parallel with the OEM ECU on my VVT MX-5 (to retain factory security and VVT control), which is also straightforward in theory...
