944 Turbo S Engine Rebuild Thread

With the seat out I decided it was a good time to undertake another little project - remote keyless unlock.

£13 for a generic kit from eBay and a relay to hook up the boot release too - under £20 all in.

Didn’t take long to wire up (just as well, not the most comfortable position) and also run the wires to the back of the hazard switch to flash the indicators too.

Splendid! I've had that on my car the whole time through the alarm. Got 2 x Serpi Star single button blippers. Quite possibly dealer fit rather than OEM. Has an immobiliser built in and fires the doors and hazards. No immobiliser socket, all works off single button press. Sensitivity adjustable too at module/siren unit which lives under the scuttle opposite side of fuse box. Must be well made and well installed.

One of my 944 driving pals drove it the other day and locked it with the key instinctively, I forgot most 944 drivers use door keys! Good news is the lock works!

My car has a Laserline 996 installed presumably by a previous owner or from new, so never used the key to lock it. One day I needed to unlock it with the key and the lock wouldn't turn as it was completely seized :ROFLMAO: (luckily, I was able to unlock the passenger door, back when cars had locks on both sides).

Whilst waiting for the engine to be finished at the machine shop I’ve undertaken a few other things.

I’d picked up some 10-speaker door cards back in June from the fire-damaged car that Stuart got some bits off up in Scotland. The speakers were shot so I’ve replaced the 3-way and a crossover kit with a nice new 2-way and a crossover kit from Focal.

Eventually got some of the leather door card skins made to the spec I wanted and they’re currently sat with the upholsterer ready for reassembly.

The door cards had the usual floppy bottoms so I treated them with fibreglass resin before adding a couple of layers of fibreglass and more resin a few days later.

I also had a go at the door handles myself and am quite happy with how they turned out:

I had to drop a couple of bits off with AMAC and agree on a few things so it was nice to see that things were nearly there (the brass valve guides aren’t mine):

The windage ports looking great with the liners installed and hand finished:

And the block:

Due to the delays and not really being able to progress with anything I’d given the engine bay a good scrub and started to machine polish and wax the paintwork.

But the devil makes work for idle hands so I popped up to Edinburgh with a mate and bought a new transaxle.

This one has far less miles than mine and quite fortuitously comes with a 4.7 V8 attached to the other end of the torque tube. The DVLA also released a load of new and prefix 25 plate registrations so a suitable plate was purchased:

It sounds rather nice and meets my wife’s criteria of “buy something newer that doesn’t need fixing all the time”. Mind you she did also ask me if I was selling the Porsche so maybe she’s not 100% on my wavelength.

Lots of shiny things everywhere! Lucky boy. Try and keep the rods straight and the pistons in the block this time.......... :p

Look after the Porsche engine too! :ROFLMAO:

You're spoiling her indoors, if that's her shopping car. :D
Nah - she made me drive her to work the other week as her car was in the garage and she didn’t want to drive LittleMissEldavo’s Fiat 500 as she hadn’t driven a manual in over 10 years!

Swapping between auto and manual, I sometimes have to remember there's a clutch to use.

And then all the tensioners and pulleys etc:

Waiting on the HG to turn up so figured I’d get as much of the bottom end done as possible, so engine mounts on and AOS, etc:

Then a good 90+ mins fitting the sump pan - might only be 3 steps for fitting the 22 bolts but each one involves going around about 2-3 times u til they’re all at the same torque.

Last thing I wanted was this leaking so used some Reinzosil sealant on either side of the gasket too:

Sump pan has a trapdoor baffle on it as well as an oil temperature sensor bung welded in too:

And all buttoned up with fresh hardware:
