944 Turbo S Engine Rebuild Thread

A smidge of clearancing needed on the upper balance shaft before fitting the heat shields and oil feed line from the modified housing. Also fitted the alternator bracket with aircon compressor still attached, I’ll leave the alternator off for now as it’s quite heavy and I need to get the engine to my Indy’s as I’ll get them to put it physically back in the car:

I also opened up the box of parts I got from Nick Jackson of Nickson Motorsport, he had my down pipe and exhaust manifolds Cerakoted so due to the super tight clearance I fitted the down pipe and turbo now:

Thinking about it I really should’ve had my exhaust manifolds and crossover pipe converted to V-band before I had the manifolds Cerakoted - I’ll speak to my welder and see if it’s still possible. If the bottom of the exhaust manifold Cerakote ends up becoming sacrificial then I’m alright with that.

Also gave out nearly 100 Chupa Chups to Trick or Treaters after turning my hallway into a Halloween Themed Rave, I don’t waste my evenings:

How big is the inlet on that turbo, and I've probably asked this before, is that deffo a S2 crank pulley/damper you're using?

3” inlet.

Yes - if you look really closely you can make out the black line around the inside where the rubber bonded part is.

Your turbos inlet looked bigger than my stone age Lindsey turbo. I think some posters on here used Lindsey 61 turbos in the past though.

Great progress.
Mind what you drink though - you installed the S2 crank pulley/damper the wrong way around ;-)

If you mean the red timing mark on the auxiliary belt pulley then that’s as I’ve not tightened the main crank bolt up yet so that’s just pointing randomly.

Well, the hangover is on me - I thought the thick edge on the damper should point frontwards, and that is wrong, sorry. Not spending much time tinkering with these cars anymore is beginning to cause memory fade... :-(

I think even I’d struggle to get this on the wrong way around!

Ordered an Athena head gasket 2 weeks ago, just had an email back to say 5-7 days delivery actually means December now so I’d better measure up for a Cometic!

Nil points for SpeedingParts whose website delivery dates are at best wildly optimistic if the parts aren’t in stock. However - huge thanks to the magnificent Paul Dolan at PartBox, had an Athena gasket on the shelf, did me a great price and it was in my hands less than 24 hours later!

It’s a smidge thicker than I’d have ideally liked but as both deck and head have been skimmed it’s pretty much bang on for compression - just a tad more squish.

It’s a MLS fibre-backed gasket with a silicon bead and 4 cut-rings that bite into the head for boosty boosty applications:

And then it made sense to fit the head of course:

And then giving the bolts plenty of time to accept the torque/angle stretch gave me an opportunity to fit my Cerakoted manifolds and the crossover pipe:

With everything done to torque and angle specs for the 16v head with a very large bar (head nuts end up about 95-100nM all in) then I could fit the cams:

Extra careful on the timing - 113mm bang on:

And then the final push left me deflated, apparently the QH QTB247 belt fits the 16v 944s and 968s but I can tell you now IT DOESN’T as it’s too short. Even taking the tensioner off it was miles out - another one to return and Justin Webb leaping to the rescue with overnight parts from Sheffield en route as I type this!

So . . . I’m an idiot. The tab on the tensioner had spun 45° CCW stopping it from fully releasing tension, when I put it back into position I could fully loosen the belt and slip it on:

Timed everything up and turned it round many many times:

Still some things to tighten up but can’t do those until the flywheel and subsequent flywheel lock are in place. Next stop is the rest of the top end.

Did someone hit the cam pulley with a hammer? Some teeth do not look very good.
