944 Turbo S Engine Rebuild Thread

Good luck with the rebuild David...btw, if you go back on what I have said about rhe forged rods over the years, you'll find that I stated they were found in later cars too. The comment I've read in the past noted this was a matter of what was left in the 'parts bin'.

hi mate, was just reading few of your posts about your using the NA head. i’m ive also considered this but the lack of ceramic linners put me off. See if you remember i’m in the middle of building a home head pressuring system cold and hot bath if need be to see if i have a hairline crack in my head, as my water statem was being pressurised with co2 and this could be the issue which cracked my cylinder years ago which is why i ended up having what your going through westwood sleeves race rods pistons the lot, but this gremlin has popped its head just after the live map tune at wayne schofields , so heads currently off.
coukd you tell me a bit more about the NA heads if you think there ok for me to push 400bhp i have no cat and would feel better if this would t affect my engine heat wise ect , as they are easy to find and as you say, i’m now onto buying my 3rd custom made cometic gasket in only a few years from the states and not becuase it’s failed , just becuase i’ve had the head off twice since the last full engine build!

cheers
Dan

Don‘t be coming in here with your truth and ruining my opportunity to tell a good story and wind you up :ROFLMAO:

Not strictly part of my rebuild but I couldn’t resist this after spotting it in the Porsche Classic Catalogue

Replaced the cracked and damaged climate control plastics with a strengthened 3D printed one:

May I ask, did you buy this, if so where, or do you have the files by which I might print one at all please?

Yup - bought it from the same guy that makes the 3D printed inserts for the standard or only944 gearshifters.

I’d have to dig out the details but he’s in Canada and I remember it being a bit of a man maths justification for the cost of it for what it is.

Hey Tref, this is the guy I got mine from - seems he may be making them again or someone else may be taking on the project too.

I’ll post up here for completeness but will send you the link via Messenger too so you see it:

Should be picking the engine up this week if my diary allows.

Block is done, sleeved, honed, decked and ready to go. Slight delay on the head as one of the Turbo exhaust valves I’d bought wasn’t 100% straight, delayed a couple of days while I got hold of another. +1mm Ferrea valves have been cut in with a multi angle seat job. Some light porting (don’t ask me what, they said things I didn’t understand but know their stuff), new guides, steam vent mod, light skim, etc. They’re building it all back up with the new Isky springs to factory coil bind measurements so I can run a wilder cam with more lift if I choose to in the future.

Had a "Hi Torque” US starter motor turn up today as mine had been rebuilt already but was a bit noisy again - didn’t take a lot of man maths to justify the more powerful one! Also received some silicon moulded hatch pin receivers from a man in the Ukraine and tried not to buy some more wheels (With varying degrees of success).

Should be starting the rebuild in a couple of weeks but I’ve gone in on a Vulcan Cut Ring Head Gasket Group Buy from the States and that won’t be here until late November/early December.

Got to pull the starter off my turbo, undecided about where to source another one at the moment.

It’s a pretty easy job to remove as long as you have disconnected the battery first! Couple of big old bolts can need some grunt behind them.

I had mine rebuilt by a local guy in a proper old school back workshop for something daft like £15 in cash. Spins up great but the (Bendix it might be called) that disconnects the starter gear from the starter ring is a bit lazy and it often makes a bit of a screeching sound.

Had been pricing up a Hi Torque replacement from the States and one popped up on UK eBay. Complete overkill on a low compression Turbo rather than an S2 or 968 but I’ve put the rest of the car together with plenty of headroom in the components so why stop now.

May consider that for the old one, but I have just had the swing arm removed from my Motorbike frame so it is now a pile of bolts and bits like a new box of Lego.

Need to get that started and reassembled before I lose bits or forget where they go, starter motors can wait.

get the bits from Wood Auto, and rebuild your own one, bit of fun init

Yeah I'll have a look at it, but if as has been suggested the winding may be breaking down, it's probably mullered.

that starter would only work on the S2 and 968 Tiptronic, wont work on a manual 968 the starter is completely different

Did you get a bogof

Yes, but the F stands for something that would be blocked by the swear filter [:D]

That‘s a late NA block I used on my Turbo that’s got knackered bores from the dodgy pistons and my original Twbo S block that has been sleeved and is now smoother than the cream in a Twinky!

Also, my new head. NA head, Turbo exhaust valves, +1mm Ferrea inlet valves, ported inlet throats, new valve guides, multi angle valve cut, +10% Isky valve springs, ported exhaust, any head corrosion welded up and skimmed down to better than RA50, Steam Vent hole in the back.
