944 Turbo S Engine Rebuild Thread

How did you get on with Wossner over the dodgy piston coating?

I didn’t pay for the uncoated pistons. The end to that particular chapter hasn’t been written yet.

Phwoar check out the rack on that!

Had a bit of a weep on part of the steering rack, given the age of it and it was black and covered in 32 years of crud that was probably to be expected.

It took a holiday to Bristol (lucky sod, further than I’ve been this year - well apart from Chernobyl back in Feb[8D]) and spent some time with Western Power Steering. £295 later and they appear to have just binned it and bought me a new one! Pic’s not the best as the bag was full of fluid that had drained out after they’d pressure tested it all.

*edit* - don’t know why the forum software has turned the picture upside down? The fact it’s not replaced it with a picture of a duck is a good start, someone must’ve put a bit more coal in the forum steam boiler.

Very nice - I had saved a link to those guys in case I ever decide to replace my own rack, good to hear you are happy with them

Great thread and full of great info and pointers unfortunately the way it went to find some of them out was at your expense and grief will the engine now run standard power figures.

The engine hasn’t run standard power for many years. The map for this Turbo is good for 368bhp on the dyno but I’ll be knocking the boost back a little so should be around 350bhp.

Next winter’s big job will be dropping the rear end and rebuilding all that, after that I’ll be slapping a different Turbo in and see where that takes me.

Financial ruin :ROFLMAO:. I know a £25k RS4 or mapped RS3 would be a better/faster every day car, but I've got years of history with my 944 turbo.

Pretty much [:D] had mine 13 years now and can't see it ever leaving me until I'm gone!

Engine block internals are being thoroughly cleaned and numerous threads being cleaned and chased.

Also, Gary’s birthday, so I made a cake.

Considered asking Capricorn for a price to have it Nikasil plated?

Nah, I think the chocolate would melt. Plus their waiting times are rather substantial, block is sleeved now anyway.

Hope the sleeves and pistons work well. Now Alusil compatible pistons seem to be NLA, I'd probably have to sleeve my 2.7 block if I ever build up a 3.0. Concerns about piston coating, and Yank supply issues stopped me doing it in the past.

I reckon 10 years from now you'll still be quoting about what you'd like to do with your 2.7 block ! [:)]

I wanted to replace the crusty [strike]oil[/strike] water pump studs but couldn’t find a part number for them. My OPC parts guy helped me out and came back to me, they’re about £2500 and come with a free engine block :ROFLMAO:

Got hold of some slightly longer 968 oil pump studs that should be fine but can be trimmed in situ if needed once it’s all buttoned up.

Here‘s a picture of a Hot Stud [;)]

Haha - I meant I used 968 oil pump studs to replace the water pump studs. Good spot!

Oil pumps on the brain as we were discussing the need to have the girdle flush with the block for oil pump face sealing.

Nip up the nuts on the girdle, and gentle tap the girdle with a plastic faced mallet would be my install method. Doing any mods to the sump?

It’s a later car so the sump already has the factory baffle/tray. There’s a LR one-way trapdoor welded in the bottom and an Ishihara Johnson Teflon crank scraper with another mesh windage shield installed in there too. Chuck in a tapped hole for an Oil Temp sensor for VEMS and I think that‘s everything sorted.
