944 vs 968 - Comparison

ORIGINAL: MarinerChris

Are the deep teledials rare then?

Are the early cars with those wheels really more sought after?

Are they worth more?

Yes, because they were manufactured for one model year only. For the 1987 model year all 944s adopted a wider track in order to make room for ABS gubbins in the hubs and also to revert to a safer steering geo.

The 1986 model year wheels whilst having the same width rims, will show approximately 30mm more rim on the outside of the wheel and are prettier as a result.

MarinerChris - I owned a 993 for a couple fo years, everyday commute 80+ miles - Im 6'4'' and no issue whatsoever with the driving position ?

Well I finally got my PC working, or should i say one of my sons did..:) So Chris thought I'd post the most recent photo of my car to show the deep dish tele's a little clearer. As you can see the car currently has no engine in it and the front panel has been left off, until that is I get the big intercooler and oilcooler that will be fitted in this latest round of mods.

Pete

btw this is my first attempt at posting a picture so hope it works

Thats a fine looking car Pete, will look even better once it is all back together :)

Just to confirm though, your wheels are the same on the one I viewed, I have been doing some wheel spotting and now can tell the difference between the 86 deep dish, versus the 87 onwards flush dish 16 inch teledials.

Not much closer to making a decision on cars yet.. So much choice, so many options!

Chris - I don't want to confuse you any further, but I am currently selling my LHD 968 Tip Coupe (link to add in my signature block) - the car is in very good condition both mechanically and aesthetically, and is perfect for long distance cruising.

I would be really interested, but I have my heart set on a manual.

Your's is the second Tip I have been offered this week in here. The other was guards red, higher mileage but only £4k, which made me really think about it as at that price it's a crazy bargain!!

Yours is so attractive because of the mileage and condition, if it was only a manual.

I have a cobalt blue one to look at over the weekend, as well as two 993's and they are all over the country!... But I am sure I want to get at least one of the cars sorted, either a 993 or a 968, as I am keen to start enjoying one.

Chris, have you driven a tip? I've had one for 13 years now, and drive it as a clutchless manual all the time. OK, you've only got 4 gears rather than 6, but 2nd is very long (tops out about 80mph!) and 3rd takes you well over a ton. Personally, I would not go back to a manual, especially in traffic. The tip is so much easier on the left leg! I was a little sceptical myself when I bought my first tip in late 1998, having always had manual cars, but now both our cars are auto/tiptronic! One main joy of the 968 tip is that you change gear with the gearstick, not with buttons or paddles, so it's not that different to a manual, just easier!

Not driven a Tip and I am tempted to try one, just a bit skeptical that I will like it or rather that I would not enjoy it as much as a manual.
But I think I will see if I can find one locally to try out before I pull the trigger on one I drove today :)

Hi Chris,

I'm relatively new Porsche convert (August 2009) buying a March 1991 944 S2 cab (now selling but not suitable for your intended use) and recently bought a late 1992 968 Cab both manual!

Both great long distance touring cars with decent boot & similar inside, with 968 being a bit more comfortable & refined.

My 968 came with 17" cup wheels which have wider lower profile tyres which apart from cornering on rails spoils the drive compared to the 16" D90's on the 944! I also prefer the 5 speed box of the S2 as the 6 speed box seems 1 to many!

The S2 also turns in better mpg around 30mpg on long runs so far only 27mpg on the 968 although this may be down to the 17" wheels & tyres?

My advice, go for a top notch example S2 and check out the Hartec buying guide from their web site before buying & better still take any prospective purchase to them for inspection if you live close enough?

You wouldn't be disappointed with either if you buy a good example, but on overall looks & drive the S2 edges it for me! My 968 is a nicer example than my S2 at a really good price, so I'm hoping a change to 16" wheels will sort the drive side out and I can live with the 6 speed box! If not I'll sell on for a better example S2?

Regards

Tony

Hi Chris,

What sort of mpg do you get with the Promax chip fitted? Was it already in or did you have it fitted? If so did you notice any improvement in mpg after the fit?

Are you running 16" or 17" wheels?

Regards

Tony

I got 27MPG from my third tankful in the 968, which is the same as my old 944T, I was hoping that 6th would be a bit taller than 5th on the T, but it seems about the same.

I am still getting used to the 6 speed box and have to do some things that I did in 2nd in 3rd and some in 3rd are now done in 4th.

What is good is coming down a slip-road in 4th at 70 just at the point the variocam cuts in and then flooring it when you see a gap. It is almost like coming on boost in 3rd!

Afraid I don't check mpg - it's my toy, so I just add fuel when the gauge gets just below 1/4, normally about 300 miles and about £65. I found out, when I had the Promax chip fitted, that I'd bought a car with a Superchip already installed. No mention of this from the previous owner or in the history, although I believe it may have been fitted about 2000-2001. No noticable difference in fuel consumption, although there is a slight but noticable difference in mid range power delivery - I think the Promax is smoother and better, but that's purely subjective.

The car is on 16's (as was my coupe). I did contemplate trying 17's, but based on advice from Memartin on porsche968uk (who also happens to be local and an aquaintance, he's tried both on his cab) I decided to stay with the 16's. Aparently on 17's the car is stiffer and more creaky / crashy. Interestingly, the first 968 cab I drove was on 18's, 225's front 255's rear. Roadholding was superb, steering was heavy and ride comfort was awful.

As a lot of you will know, I have been looking for a 968 and a 993.

For the 968 I think I have made my choice, its a lovely metallic blue left hand drive coupe with grey leather interior, K reg with 140,000 miles on it.

It turns out that the seller is the son of one of my fathers friends (found out this after finding and viewing the car) and once we found out about the connection via our fathers, the poker face was dropped and he said he is willing to negotiate on the price. It was advertised for £7995. Now its just down to the negotiation on the price.

Now I do not mind that price, but is it too high? Just right?

A PCGB member just sold his black tiptronic on pistonheads for similar money, but he had almost half the mileage.. But also it did sell very quickly.

So I am in two minds.. Do I just take it, or play hard ball on the price?

Hi Chris, does sound a bit expensive, but as ever, if it's mint and has been properly maintained, then mileage is less of a factor. With cars this age, condition is everything, mileage doesn't really matter anymore.
