944 vs 968 - Comparison

Nice one Chris!

I got to drive my 968 properly today and had a lot of fun, but I still do love the shape of my 944, I put the bins out earlier and spent the whole time looking at both cars on my drive and had a wander around the old girl, I think it will be a real wrench when Simon drives my 944 away this weekend.

The first picture I put up in my office was the drawing of the 944 that my Wife commissioned 2 Christmases ago

Great post Chris, maybe you should apply for a job at Top Gear..:)

Glad you got chance to drive the 944T's and your spot on with your observations. Good luck with the 993, one bit of advice unless you have very small feet wear the smallest style of shoe that you can. A good friend of mine had a 993 but couldn't drive it with normal shoes and he had small feet, my size 11 would never fit, no heel and toeing for me.

Unfortunately this doesnt come with the car, but Id like a photocopy. [:D]

I am actually getting worried about the 993 now. I keep getting told that the driving position is bad and now I need to wear small shoes?!?!?

I did do some reading up on the 993 models, and had seen that the right hand drive has an awkward driving position and that the left hand drive ones were much better, so I plan on driving left and right hand drive versions (as at least 50% of my driving will be on the other side of the road) to see what the score is.

But now I will be on the lookout for issues with my feet getting tangled up as well.

Not sure about top gear, I can hardly spell my own name, but then again, that's probably what you mean! :D

I do keep thinking about the 220 car I drove though, it seems to have really made an impression.. If I was looking for a garage queen to pamper, I think I would have bought it in a second. It was brilliant white, black leather interior and just looked so sharp.

Its styling had something I can not put my finger on, it had the same appeal to me as the old Ford Cosworth RS500's have, just a certain mid 1980's aggressive yet purposeful stance and presence.

Jeremy, I feel for you when your 944 goes, I know exactly what you are saying. Before I left the states my last night with my 996 Turbo I kept looking out at it periodically, almost like I had abandoned a puppy.

Having said that, I also remember having a vauxhall Cavalier SRI when I was young that let me down no end of times, when I sold that I wanted to beat it with a baseball bat before it drove off, just to show it I had the last word. I can fully understand the rock star who shot their detomaso pantera with a shotgun, or how Michael Ryan shot his Astra with an AK47 which kicked off his mad mass murder spree (just to make it clear, my opinion is that shooting an Astra with an AK47 was probably justified, the mass murder was a serious over reaction)

Where did you get that picture?! That is so cool. Whatever cars I buy, I need cool drawings of them!

Not that I'm bias but yes Chris your spot on with the 220, btw do you know what teledials the car you drove had? If it looked that good perhaps it had the rare early deep dish rims, I was hoping to post a picture of my car to show you but my PC seems on strike so limited to my phone which unfortunately this forum doesn't support for uploads. I'll try again later .

Nice one Mike, that's going back a bit and IIRC we had a nice pub meal after..:)

The turbos move up a level with 300+BHP though and that is the easy and reliable first step on a 250,
Tony

Chris the driving position/ pedal position is nothing to be put off about on a RHD,I have a 964 and a 993 and I have size 12 feet,no problems whatsoever,my wife drives the 964 aswell no problems, lovely cars, quirky but lovely. Will be second nature after a little while.
Enjoy.

Pete - The wheels on the one I drove were just like those, I had a look online earlier, and the later ones have the teledial bit closer to the rim? If so, yes, had the same wheels as the red car above.

MarkK - I have lined up a test drive back to back of a couple of 993's so I can see what all the fuss is about with LHD and RHD. I will report back with what I find, so far it seems that I am getting two stories, either "dont worry about it, its not an issue" or "bloody hell its torture driving a RHD"...

Still a bit smitten with the 220 I drove though, even though my head keeps saying 968 & 993, my heart keeps saying "one of each and keep the turbo as the garage queen", but that will involve upgrading my house hunt to one including a triple or quad garage, rather than a double! lol

Where are you house hunting? I know of one for sale just south of Battle in East Sussex that has integral double garage and separate double garage - that has a side part that will take another car! Even has a trailer parking area behind the garage!

Now you are talking!!

PM Me any details, the garage situation there sounds ideal!

House hunt is anywhere from Southampton to Dover and as far north as the M25, I do like to be close'ish to the coast though and not too far from a motorway or a fast'ish road network.

Apart from that, I need to commute to dover and beyond once a month, but that is just that, once a month, the rest of the time I work from home, so it needs to be supported by decent internet and not have houses too close together (having lived in the burbs in the states, I don't think I could cope with a semi!!)

They are called deep dish teles and although quite rare and do command a premium over the later offset ones, the premium is not enough to warrant buying a car for!

The Turbo ones ar 7" at the front and I think 8" at the back, N/A ones are 7" all round.

Would not dream of buying a car for the wheels, but am thinking if I buy they 220 turbo, I might want a spare set of wheels and would be interested in knowing what other wheels would fit, how hard it would be to get another set of teledials and how much would be a reasonable price?

A 220 turbo can be made very quick indeed if you have the funds, 260/270 bhp can be had for not a lot of money, they are brilliant and i suspect better built than later cars.........ducks for cover [:D][:)]
I also have a tuned 250 Turbo S which feels very "tight" on MO30 chassis / suspension, but you could also tweek the softer suspension on the 220 for not a load of daft money which i will be doing with my 220 when £££ allow.
Follow your heart.
I swapped the cup 1 wheels on my 220 for refurbed deepdish teledials, i love em !

My 220 was actually quite soft and compliant (or just worn...!) I regularly did 5-7 hour days behind the wheel with no issue

The 968 on MO30 is very firm, but not as bad as my Wife's 5 series M Sport!

The Konis you have with your M030 suspension are really adjustable and if they feel really firm are probably wound up to near max stiffness, they can be softened progressively if it becomes too much.Great robust suspension you have and very serviceable .
BTW your 968 is like the much prettier road car version of my race car[:)]

Thanks Mark, I thought they were adjustable but haven't had time to have a proper look yet!

I did a longer drive in the 968 yesterday and I feel its charms creeping up on me. It is not immediately impressive like the 944 Turbo, but I am beginning to understand the term 'complete package' that people in the know talk about
