944S2 Track Car Project - Spa April 2019

Torsen IIs aren't that bad... Far better thana viscous type anyway. Nick Jackson has one in a series one transaxle, I believe. Ive know about this for over a decade, but never made a deal of headway, mostly due to the lack of suitable Audi differentials in UK market cars, but also because you really need to see one in-situ and be able to compare it to the original and the VAG part unmodified.

 
If anyone sees me on Wednesday (that means you MarkK [:)]), I'll be travelling to Germany for a trackday on Thursday. Haven't been to the 'ring for 3 years & can't wait!

There's been a few jobs to get the car in shape -

replace all idlers & rollers

replace cam cover gaskets (oil in plug holes)

new spark plugs

check & re-grease wheel bearings

new brake fluid

new gearbox oil

new front discs and pads (PFC 11)

fix heater (not the "clip" but a different loose rod)

mend front splitter (stick some more plywood underneath..)

fit rear seat base (linen logo)

All running nicely now - hope it all goes to plan.. Jochen from Frozenspeed is in attendance so I should get some nice pics

 
Have a good trip Ed, quite jealous as I'd hoped to get a trip in myself before the weather really changes. But the OT recently lost her job so that put an end to that plan :( she's back at work now though so a winter track day or two is on the cards.

It'll be my first trackday there so should be a bit different from the frenzy of TF. I'm waiting until I've brought it back in one piece before I book anything else...

Car went really well & is back pretty much unscathed - one rear wheel bearing is a bit noisy, and the inner CV on that side is spraying grease around, but all fine apart from that.

 
There was another 944 there - a bit less standard...

It's had a fair bit of money sunk into it, 1250kg, 300 ish bhp. I saw it in a magazine feature earlier this year. It certainly was quick. I had a good chat to the owner in the evening, but didn't have a poke around the car, so can't really say anything about the spec

 
Good work Ed and I really like the look of that 951! Any ideas on where he's from? Interesting to see the bonnet vents on it, I've been thinking of something similar for my build... Do you know if he races it?

His name's Jim & he's from Kent - is a PCGB member. Doesn't race the car. The front end is all fibreglass - he wasn't very complimentary about D9 lights! I reckon a standard shaped front end will be fine for you - it was good enough for Mark.

 
Weather wasn't bad [:D] - bit cold overnight, but gloriously sunny.

Transaxle cars were well represented - there were also 3 x 968CS's and a 928S4 (manual).

 
Good stuff. The only front end changes I have in mind are to ditch the rectangular lamps and to fit a fibreglass bonnet with some venting to improve air flow through the rad and IC. What goes in must come out and I reckon there's not a lot of through flow in the bay with the current layout.

But I take your point that the stock setup worked for Mark!

Bonnet vents are useful for removing under bonnet heat. Flow to the intercooler is well ducted from the front air dam, if you want to extract that flow from the bonnet look what Porsche did on 968 turbo.

 
Thanks Blade; the vent at the front of a 968 Turbo is along the same lines as what I had envisaged, possibly with a couple of smaller vents on either side of the bonnet towards the screen to help promote flow over the turbo and exhaust manifold... There's lots of thinking and measuring to do on this one!

If you look at a pic of the 968 turbo engine bay it looks like the intercooler exit and air filter inlet are both ducted/sealed to the underside of the bonnet vents. Tricky to copy effectively I'd think.

 
Steve Bassington ducted the intercooler in his 924 turbo sprint car - to a vent in the front of the bonnet. It was a few years back now, but there will be pics on 924.org I guess.

Not sure if there's as much space in a 944 turbo.

Those D9 vents are nasty - I recall someone on here got a bodyshop to put individual vents in a bonnet?

 
Yes I've seen the article about the white car too, it's running the Augtronic ECU with a standard turbocharger

He was quick...apparently under 8 mins BTG. (as a comparison, mine is probably 8.30+, although I don't time my laps so really have no idea)

I only saw him once - he flashed past me on the main straight as I was entering the circuit (from the TF car park)

I chased after him & managed to keep him in sight until about half way round when he slowed and I caught and passed him - he said later he was on a "cool down" lap [:)]

 
I bought the D9 lights,they were very expensive...yikes ,never fitted them,the guy that bought my car then fitted them he said they were a complete PIA.He is very engineering savvy.He had to modify them apparently,According to him they are not in anyway an easy fit.

I retained the standard airbox but with a K and N panel,then a flexi hose going to the front of the PU at the bottom with an air intake.I never had any problems at all with the car temperatures-wise,with the exception of Quali at Spring classic at Spa, the Kemel straight to name the location right at the top, it was high 30s that day and it felt weak at the top of the hill.I was advised to try special Turbo fuel bought in large drums from Sonaco.It seemed to work just great,although it did rain in the actual race which helped i suppose.

 
Early in the day it was misty in parts (really thick down at Breidscheid) & all cars had to have headlights on. The headlights requirement stayed in place for much of the day, even when the mist had cleared
